What do you think of USB-C?

I was just wondering. I think USB C is nice too have. but having nothing but 2-4 USB Ports is dumb!

I mean lets assume we're in the hypothetical future when everything is literally USB C!! Plugging the charger anywhere is fun! so is using any. but that means you have just another port... that means you can just plug either a display a mouse or a keyboard or an storage! nothing else! That's horrible! I'm saying this because companies usually follow apple. and the 4 port version (still really stupid IMO) is the more expensive one!

Do you think other's will do the same? I mean the HP Spectre x360 that i'm planning on buying has only 2 USB C and 1 USB A  (that's at least 3...)

 

Dongles are not only annoying but not reliable.... and expensive and they take space.

 

right now as far as I've read the power delivery doesn't work very well, there's even a chance of destroying my laptop D: not to mention that the wrong cable can kill your laptop too!

also the cables are more expensive! 

 

I think having an extra usb C port while having everything else is amazing! but having it as the main one doesn't sound nice.... I mean something like the dell xps 15-13 is nice!

Apple could have at least included a few gen 1 usb C ports or maybe even usb c with 2.0 speeds (considering the cost is an issue?) alongside the others...

For some phones, the USB C is also used for headphones too, so I'm interested in seeing if the port will hold up such heavy usage.

I just keep the dongle on the headphones, so its annoyance is pretty minimal.

I love new tech that provide more options and better I/O. However, I do not think it's smart to release anything with strictly one type of port. I'd rather have a device that isn't "super thin" just to ensure I can still have some 3.1 USB and a variety of display ports. (HDMI, VGA, DP)

still I go on the car and do other stuff! though I mostly use Bluetooth headphones. I'd be annoying to carry one to the car. specially considering it's my brother's and he always leaves a Lightning adapter connected  also I hate the way the dongle feels (my hands and stuff) 

 

but I was mostly talking about laptops and how they only have that ! Can say that on phones it's less annoying but still kinda annoying

Yeah. and if they want to go full usb C include like atleast 6 or 8 of them! (if they think the future is all USB C)

Only when all current peripheral manufacturers also switch to USB-C. (Mice, keyboards, printers, flash drives, etc..)

 

....And that's IF there will ever be a day when EVERYONE switches to the latest and greatest, but by then there will probably be USB-D

I feel like we are still 5-7 years from when the old usb a standard will disappear on mainstream stuff.  Apple did what they did because if they dont change something and convince all their loyal fans that it is the greatest thing since sliced bread then they have no reason to sell you a new laptop.  I like to think that most pc manufacturers are a combination of too afraid (thats not a bad thing) and too cheap to jump headfirst into new tech most of the time.  I mean if you go to walmart or best buy and look around a lot of laptops still have vga outputs.  Who still uses vga???  And in the business world there there is still a demand for old interfaces because they dont want to replace all their peripherals or buy 100 adapters just because they needed new computers for the office.  At my last job installing security and fire alarms we still had to special order computers from dell with serial and parallel ports on them so we could hook up to systems that some big companies still have from the 80's and 90's. We even had to order them with windows xp because a lot of the software didnt support anything newer. 

 

I have a macbook pro that is almost 4 years old and it is still great.  only thing I dont like about it is having to carry an adapter for the mini display port to hook up to external monitors.  I have friends that are graphics designers and professional photographers who were waiting on the new macbook before it came out and after they announced it were scrambling to try and order the model before it so they didnt have to carry tons of adapters and stuff around with them.  They are dedicated enough to the platform that they still wanted a mac, just not the crap that apple was trying to force on them.  apple lost sight of what the professionals really want and need on a day to day basis in an effort to satisfy the hipsters with something a tiny bit thinner and more minimalist.  I mean they have basically been selling the exact same computer for about 15 years and managed to stay relavent with small refreshes from time to time.  hopefully they learn from their mistakes.  and hopefully so did pc manufacturers.

I think it's the opposite. We are in a weird transition age and if big manufacturers like Apple didn't make a very forceful move it would take years and years to make the switch. Sure it is annoying now but having one plug do everything is great.

Too many standards on Type-C. Just having USB on type-C ports needs to be killed off on every form factor besides small tablet and phone.

Make it just Thunderbolt on laptops, desktops, and large tablets. And have it as a supplimental port, not a replacement.

It might be great for you as a tech enthusiast, but from a business standpoint you swap everything to a new standard and you have just lost my business.  The business already has printers, keyboards, mice, monitors, and if its like my old job lots of proprietary stuff that requires their own dongles and adapters to connect to their proprietary hardware.  When you start having to connect dongles to dongles to dongles just to get something connected then you start running into issues where this dongle doesnt play nice with that dongle,  and this other dongle works with everything except my printer, but the one for the printer wont work with something else.  Most businesses are not setup properly for modern tech, and even a small business of 20 or 30 employees would financially burdened from trying to bring in new hardware like that.

I'd still prefer USB c over micro and traditional USB. Even my USB 3.1 ports aren't as nice as USB c is. They look nicer, fast, and reversible

I was actually super tempted to get the macbook pro 13" as my secondary device (I have a gaming PC at home) because the display is just freaking beautiful. AFAIK nothing matches that! also nice battery and stuff. not to mention that body is beautiful... and oh god I'm getting off topic I don't have money anyway. Although I can save more.

Apple going exclusive TB3, IMO, isn't that big of a deal. Using external drives on OSX, for me, isn't quite that attractive. At least, compared to any Windows machine I use.

And when it comes down to it, having a good dick for home use is fairly nice for cable management.

I'd also spring for the 15" purely for 4 ports, and get an ethernet adapter if you can run wired at home.

How many laptops do you know of now with 6-8 USB ports? How many do you know with even 4 USB 3.0 ports? Most 15" laptops have 3 USB ports, 2 of which are 3.0 and 1 2.0 because of constraints on running connections to the port. The 15" MacBook already has 1 more of these ports than most standard laptops of it's size do.

 

What I'd rather see is more multipurpose devices. A brick charger with a built in USB hub, and display adapters with a USB-C port on the side.

 

Also keep in mind that display dongles aren't anything new to USB-C. If you had a MacBook before you had mDP and had to convert it. If you had most Ultrabooks you had mHDMI and had to convert it. Sure you could have a straight through cable with those, but you can do that with USB-C too. If it's DisplayPort you just make a cable and if HDMI you just have the DisplayPort to HDMI converter in the cable.

Know this was likely sarcasm, but there wouldn't be much point. USB-C is pretty futureproof, and only even exists to solve many of the issues with the old USB-A/B paradigm regarding multi-role "OTG" devices. USB-C is far more capable than any of the previous A/B Normal/Mini/Micro combinations moving forward.

Please no... Thunderbolt controllers have issues... They're expensive, power hungry, restricted to Intel host devices only, don't support newer DisplayPort revisions and just generally aren't the best controllers for USB-C devices unless you need the Thunderbolt protocol itself...

 

Just do what the vast majority of companies are already doing. USB 3.1 Type-C and DisplayPort on at least one of the ports.

Just do what the vast majority of companies are already doing. USB 3.1 Type-C and DisplayPort on at least one of the ports.

Fuck using just the USB and DP protocols on Type-C equipped devices that aren't a small tablet or phone. It only serves to confuse stupid consumers.

Newer DP revisions can be left to GFX card updates, and TB3 handles USB better than good enough.

And so far, the power hunger issue hasn't made any TB3 equipped device non viable compared to an equivalent without.

Expense is also proving to me a minor issue, with the slew of laptops packing TB3 without raising cost. The peripherals also aren't rediculous compared to USB 3.1 counterparts of equivalent capability and quality.

The way it used to be was simply due to protocols not being intercompatible, and there was no convertion hardware readily available for that many consumer devices then.

Now, USB and Thunderbolt can act as an abstraction layer and be adapted to many other protocols that consumers use. Professional hardware still uses some of those ports, for reliability or becuse they cannot easily be adapted.

Add Thunderbolt, USB-C, USB-A, USB 3.1, USB 2.0 all together.

it's replacing mag safe ethernet 3 usb ports and display port/hdmi. not just usb.

still hubs. that interduces problems and reduces mobility. but I agree getting home and plugging a single cable for everything is nice. but there are docks! (although not compatible with all devices) and that requires a single port anyway!

I agree. but that's a bit extreme. all i' asking is single or more usb c with type a. magsafe (or charging port) and an HDMI or display port. that's all I don't find use for anything else. although I do have a pc at home! I'm sure people without a pc would use more USB ports

Except that's the issue... If you have a GPU that supports DisplayPort 1.3 or 1.4 you can't use that over USB-C if you're using a Thunderbolt controller. You're limited to DisplayPort 1.2...

Except that's just one of the many issues with adopting it across devices. If you're building a product around it you can compensate, but that also means cutting out other things.

On a $700 premium laptop? Sure. What's an extra dollar of cost? Try putting it in any kind of budget device. It's not even just the added cost of the controller. You need to use a core-i series processor, need to have more robust traces. It's all things that add up quick on a constrained budget.

The point is to make devices more portable and easier to carry. If you want all your ports you can still buy bigger, bulkier laptops from certain manufacturers. Adding more and more ports has other issues though in terms of space on the board for chips and traces.

On the MacBook pro 2015? Magsafe, 2 USB 3.0, 2 thunderbolt 2, HDMI, and 2 mini DisplayPort... No Ethernet... And you come out of it with 4 multipurpose ports rather than 8 ports that each have their own purpose. Let's be honest here, how many users *actually* used all 8 ports at the same time?

How does a power cord with a hub reduce mobility at over over a power cord without a hub?

 

How does a cable with an extra port on it near the plug reduce portability at all over just the cable?
