Is buying used still worth it?

Bruno_A

Hey guys, I was wondering, with "recent" releases such as cheap hyperthreaded Pentiums and RYZEN, is it still worth it to build a PC out of used components?

Many thanks, Bruno.

Depends which parts. I wouldn't buy storage or PSUs used. CPUs I'd definitely buy used. I have a used i3 3220 running in my NAS, got it for less than half what you'd pay new.

Used is definitely still worth it.  Especially for builds on the ultra cheap.

I made a gaming computer for less than $100.
I wouldn't be able to do that with new parts.

Currently focusing on my video game collection.

It doesn't matter what you play games on, just play good games you enjoy.

You think I've only built this computer?  I'm an enthusiast, I'm not stopping at one and calling it good for all time.

Here's two PCs I've done for less than $100 that can game.

It's definitely worth it to breath a bit more life into an older system. A used GPU for my system would probably extend its useful life a bit longer.

Sure thing. You can usually get used at same price which would still beat new in performance. Plus costs of added hardware. Like with CPUs how much going for DDR4 based platform would cost vs going for top end DDR3 platform. DDR3 i7s are still good for another 3-5 years.

I personally just snatched GTX 780 for the price of new GTX 1050. Totally worth it.

A few months ago, I built a PC out of used parts with a core i5 2500 non-K and paid £75 for the CPU + 50€ for a nice motherboard, which allowed me to overclock my non-K i5 to 4.1GHz, but if it wasn't for the motherboard, wouldn't it be worth to build with a Kaby Lake Pentium instead?

Also, I just found a ridiculously good deal on a local facebook classifieds page from where I go on holiday and where my father actually lives, a GTX 780Ti for £50, I wonder what he replaced it for, and if it was worth it to sell the GPU for £50...I'm out...bye...

Thats better than what I got for half the price. If its working all ok. This is EXCATLY the reason why buying used is still good option when upgrading.

Well, people from that place tend to sell used stuff extra cheap, my father bought multiple iPhones with cracked screens for ridiculously low prices, such as £100 for an iPhone 6S when it was the latest model and even lower than that, but seeing a £50 780Ti just got me like, WTF...I might buy a GPU there, LOL, eBay is not worth it anymore xDxDxD

Yup, places where "normal" people sell stuff prices are usually lower than on sites where enthusiasts sell things. Because latter are better aware what their stuff is worth.
