That does look competitive with that 7400 for example with only games seriously outpacing it without overclock but not by much with an overclock.

well the zen APU is called Raven Ridge and I was expecting it to be a 4c8t + GPU die.

it will use ZEN arch but a different die layout so they could make it more cost efficient to low powered machines then the current die.

AMD using the same die for r3/r5/r7/epyc/threadripper. I dont believe that production cost varies much between r3 and r7, so i can't see it profitable for using zen architecture in sub-100$ market.

But i dont really know how much it really cost to produce those chips.

Intel is making each processor with individual die structure, so they can afford building small core count CPU. AMD is making only 8 core modular CPUs, so its makes more sense for them to play lego and build high core count cpus, leaving r3/r5/r7 as a development stage to get rid of all the bugs.

They could make a dual core, proof being the existance of a 6 core variant (meaning one of the modules was chopped in half). I think they should just make a lower clocked variant of the quad core though, considering they'd be replacing quad core athlon IIs.

 

Costs actually scale incredibly well, ryzen 7 just has two quad core "core complexes" whereas r3 only has 1. The blocks are only quad core, the full die is an octo core (in r7).

Aye honestly this Ryzen 3 chips are what I would call "Budget overclocker" chips: Gamers and enthusiasts on a very tight budget that might be able to obtain a better cooling solution second hand or otherwise that could put this at at least 3.7 or 3.8ghz even just getting one of the better AMD stock coolers second hand would do wonders.

 

But if you're just looking at a Netflix and homework computer for the family the pentium 4600 its still a better idea and can game on a pinch. The other alternative would be the AMD APUs or lower end chips but those are forthcoming, the rock bottom market it's still mostly better with intel today.

Meh, still see no point to budget builds and they are performing basically on par with i3's within a few bucks of them. Nothing really that exciting.

They're decent chips in any regard. If they were to have the same ipc as skylake and kabylake they they would probably be on par with i5's at stock but then that would be mayhem for  the market cause that would essentially kill off intel's low end. Good to see some competition back in the market.

Agreed but I was really talking more about intel "shitting their pants"

 

Even though I'm not a huge AMD fan I'm low key rooting for them to drive competition, but let's not get hasty. The newest article(2016) I can find detailing AMD's net worth puts them at less than 3 billion and intel at ~150 billion.

Remember the 1600 has 2 more cores than the i5's and those are about the same in games, 1800 has double the cores and threads to the i7 and those are effectively the same in games also, it's no different for the r3's to the i3's. This will probably the same for zen2 and maybe zen3 though I'm thinking zen3 may close the performance gap

I'm pretty sure they just disabled 2 cores per CCX in R3, rather than disable an entire CCX.

AMDs current market capitalisation is USD13.95 billion, Intel USD163.64 billion, which is somewhere about right when compared to their relative sales revenues for last year, although, Intel obviously actually made a profit last year, so... 2017 results will be very interesting for both of them, I suspect.

They are going to make a Raven Ridge die, with Zen architecture CPU cores and an integrated GPU based on the Vega architecture.

 

The die will apparently come with 4 CPU cores. That also means a cut-down SKU with 2 cores is plausible.

Raven Ridge is probably going to be a single CCX tied to a small Vega module.

Hey now, only they graphics cards are hotter. Ryzen runs pretty cool until the last 100 Mhz that each chip can push out under normal cooling.
