AMD Ryzen Customers Falling to RMA Fraud via Amazon

 

Apparently two customers who bought AMD Ryzen CPU's were shocked to found Intel CPU's from their shipments but also what was included in the package they received. Included in the article are pictures of the customers who bought the so called " Ryzen " CPU's. This is to warn the tech savy people and also the not so tech savy ones to always check and make sure what package or shipment you'll receive once you bought the item you want to have and to be conscious on inspecting so called package received. 

 

 

 

 

Instead of receiving a AMD Ryzen CPU the customer received a Intel Celeron instead. Apparently an elaborative mass RMA fraud is seeping through Amazon. While Amazon did offer both of them refunds and even a gift card, these type of scams might turn away first timers who want to try experiencing building their PC's first time or to try what AMD Ryzen has in store or maybe the people who are waiting for the bang for the buck CPU's it may even lead to damaged motherboards or other damaged PC components that in some cases (which Amazon will probably not cover).

Looking from both the processors they look like they have the exact same heat sink (and looks crappy by the way and it isn't the AMD Wraith cooler) with a unique and dated looking design and since both processors have the same elaborate false-Ryzen markings placed on the package, we can conduct a safe conclusion that thiis is a work of a single entity. The fact that whoever is behind this seems to be doing this on a regular basis means that this isn’t some ‘lone’ scammer trying his luck with RMA fraud but rather a relatively well planned fraud.

last year when i ordered an i5 6600k for my brother the cpu was also missing from the package and we managed to get our money back, but most people who arent trusted long term amazon buyers will probably have less luck

Also on an unrelated note I bought a pair of Apple EarPods from a Target once and they were fake, luckily the lady working at returns didn't even question it and I got an exchange.

It wasn't targets fault, someone bought cheap $5 ones from 7/11 and bought real ones from target and then returned them with the fake ones inside to get $5 Apple EarPods.

Was it actually "sold and shipped by Amazon" when they bought it, or was it a third party seller.

 

Sounds like a dodgy third party seller if i'm being honest.

i know, i am just curious why would people buy apple things from non-apple store, assuming you have no apple store nearby.

The wording of that is rather misleading. Those are returns sent to Amazon, and while technically the terminology is correct (Return Merchandise Authorization) the term RMA is generally used for sending defective products back to their point of manufacture for repair or replacement. These were simply sent back to Amazon by the purchasers with different stuff inside. Happens all the time.

This won't affect true RMAs, and also won't affect returns to businesses as they're generally covered by law.

What it will affect is someones job. Should have looked more closely at the return before approving it.

My closest one is a few miles away, Target is legit over a bridge in the mall I live near a few blocks from me. 

 

I go to target because 5% off even though I have a Best Buy right next to the Target

It's cheaper because stores like Best Buy occasionally have sales and honestly It's easier for me to deal with a Best Buy Employee than a Apple One

From what the article suggests, these were shipped and sold by Amazon. The Fraud part is that another buyer purchases one, swaps the cpu and heatsink with the fakes, then RMA it back to Amazon, where it will probably be passed onto another consumer. 

 

I expect most RMA (functioning) goods are given a visual once over before putting it back for sale. Though this is probably going to be a special case now.

this is similar to when you find super low deals on a product, but the seller just launched. it's probably too good to be true

i've had things from amazon as seller not being the item order. Once ive ordered a seagate iron wolf and got an archive HDD instead. I returned it and amazon still says they havent received it.

 

Scams like this are creeping up all over the place. On amazon in which the item is fulfilled by amazon, some sellers are labelling their items as something else so amazon's own warehouse now has a mix of both genuine and fake items for the same item.

this happens all the time, i was with a company doing 75k/day in sales and people would always buy the legitimate product, and return a fake copy. there's nothing the merchant can do, unless they're the size of AMD i guess.
