In a weird reality, it's roughly cheaper to get most 1080s over the 1070s at the moment.

 

And they might just go all out on $399 USD since they've been out of this space and Vega isn't the card they're using to get wholly back into the full game. It's a stepping stone to Navi and the interlinked GPUs.

As good as Vega might be, you still have a better card now.   The alternative was waiting an unknown length of time for a card not quite as good to save an unknown amount.  Enjoy your purchase and don't get hung up on if's.

Hi

WOW , impressive numbers compared to FE!!! They can sell well if AMD put a good price tag on them. Something around 450 is nice!

Unfortunately VEGA doesn't seem to be what we hoped to be but at least , it can be cheaper AND they might be able to get close to 1080ti with driver updates ( That's what happened to 580 and it's better than 1060 now )

And knowing that AMD did Ryzen and VEGA together (means less budget) , then i think this performance (between 1080 and 1080ti) is acceptable

I'm too sure but I think that the RX Vega doesn't come at 1630mhz I would expect something lower considering all of AMDs clock speeds the tend to be lower

But gaming cards are always faster then pro cards and the pro card boosts to 1600Mhz already.

What makes you think software isn't important? It determines how gpu is utilized, like a racing driver in a sport car.

Unless someone can explain how halfing the RAM and boosting the core clock by 30Mhz can push performance so far ahead of Vega FE I'm sorry but I just don't see these numbers as being real.

 

Linus said on last weeks wan show, Vega FE & Vega RX are the exact same die, sure there might be a few small changes but essentially Vega is Vega and basic physics tells us you can't magically make something out of nothing which leaves 3 scenarios

 

1) AMD is infact Hogwarts

2) They gimped Vega FE

3) These numbers are not real

 

Which one do you think is more likely?

It's made for gaming and the VEGA FE isn't

You guys have to consider that there are a lot of features specific to vega which are DISABLED on Vega FE atm (like the rasterizer)

I went to Newegg.com to look at 1070 prices. There's only a handful cheaper than the 1080s right now.  Same as on Amazon, it seems. Who in their right mind is paying $750 USD for a 1070? The reference 1080 and 1080 Ti are cheaper.

Considering the 1080 Ti launch timing, it looks a LOT like Nvidia expected that as well, with a launch in April. Thus the 1080 Ti in March & a new Titan Xp a few months later.

That'd be awesome, but I highly doubt that's happening.  But, well, they could. (There should be a 4 Gb HBM2 version, but the actual RX Vega cards have been really low on the leaked information.)

A fraction of budget but the card is twice as power hungry and may or may not outperform 1080 in all cases. I will like as much as the next person that AMD to disrupt the GPU market, I really do. But Vega will not do it unfortunately. We hoped Fiji will do it: not a chance, next hope was Polaris, again nVidia remains king. Now we hope Vega will beat the king, but the evidence so far suggest the contrary. Next hope Navi? How many “hopes” we need to have... And how many times AMD will let us down again and again?

We, as customers, don’t really care about AMD’s ambitions. I don’t really care about that. We care about performance, power consumption and price.

The base clock of GTX 1080 ti is 1480MHz, I would guess the 3D Mark just reports the base clock, not the actual clock even if the card runs at higher clocks. Similar to how GPU-Z shows the clocks in the main tab.

 

You would have to seriously throttle the card to let it run just on its stock clocks, the GPU Boost 3.0 will always take over and boost the clock to the roof even on a reference design.
