A Rant about LTT's Latest $1000 Build Guide

Just now, Princess Cadence said:

I suppose they will make another "honest answers" video addressing this issue and trying to justify it? eh...

I feel like this isn't something that would cause them to make an honest answers about, but what I'd like them to do is create a NEW build guide video with a BETTER priced out build (1600+16gb RAM+1070 or 7700+1070 like what @deXxterlab97 priced out).

for $1000 cad this build would've been ok (1070 prices are $600, you're not shoving in one of those..)

Ryzen 5 3600 stock | 2x16GB C13 3200MHz (AFR) | GTX 760 (Sold the VII)| ASUS Prime X570-P | 6TB WD Gold (128MB Cache, 2017)

Samsung 850 EVO 240 GB

138 is a good number.

You forgot to realize who the flick was sponsored by.

Its well known that Linus sold out, and is currently selling out. He sometimes puts little to no effort into his video's, which he admits to.

Still should've put attention to this.

Some games use more.

Have you ever thought that maybe they shoot the footage before Ryzen and did the talking part when the RX580 existed. It's call editing. And Linus said it has 16GB of ram not 8GB. Listen to the video instead of constant moaning.

It does? The newegg link said 8gb so that's what I assumed it was. Wasn't able to watch the video for reasons.

I addressed that in my original post also, they put a disclaimer saying that since filming the 580 had been released, so that would be a better option than the 480. Why couldn't they do the same for Ryzen? Not really valid because of that.

EDIT: And that still doesn't address the horribly done part list.

yeah i originally didn't bother to watch the video, I'm 6 years working in IT, i don't need to watch another build guide, That said after reading all this I gave it a watch and I'm going to have to agree with the OP, that build is Kek. does really feel of sellout (Specially a CPU cooler on a Locked CPU ?! ?! )

I didn't read all the comments here, but one thing to consider is this was filmed well before Ryzen 5 was released. I watched this build guide on Floatplane over two weeks ago and he was teasing this build guide on Twitter a week or two before that.

In case you missed the boat, LTT is a business now. They have employees to pay and kids to feed. That means making sacrifices in terms of quality and reputability in order to grow the channel and increase cashflow. Whether it is lame video thumbnails or sponsored builds of dubious value, you have to accept that reliable and accurate information is not necessarily the prime concern of a channel like this.

A business "now"?  So what were they up to before now?  Were they all playing parts in a play?  Indulging in some weird fetish?

They've always been a business.  It's only lately that they've gone away from their roots and taken on this air of superiority and "We know better than you do and if you don't like it, who cares" mentality.  Plus the rampant shilling.  It leaves a bad taste.

@Slick@LinusTech@nicklmg@CPotter

For those of you that don't know, LTT recently put out this video:

Now, it's great that LTT is making another build guide, but I have MANY issues with this build. Here is a short list:

  • A 1600 would be a much better choice. It would cost only a little more, comes with a better stock cooler, and can be OCed, not to mention on average the minimums and averages are higher, and in any multi threaded workloads it will crush (though that's not completely relevant, since this is a gaming build guide)
  • You're using a B150 mobo with a Kaby Lake CPU. While most of the time there shouldn't be an issue, there are probably still some B150 mobos on shelves that have older bioses that don't support Kaby Lake on them.
  • You only got 8gb RAM in a $1000 build. WTF?
  • You bought an $80 cooler with a locked CPU and mobo. Wat.
  • You got a $100 case, instead of a $65 one like the S340. At the very least, get the Pure Base 600 no window instead for $20 cheaper.
  • You could've saved another $20 by getting something like an M12ii instead for the PSU.
  • All the money saved by doing that allows us to fit a 1070 in the build, a GPU that is at least 25% more powerful from here (probably more since it's a top of the line 580 vs a founders 1070)

Here is the PCPP list that evidences this:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 1600 3.2GHz 6-Core Processor  ($217.55 @ OutletPC)
Motherboard: MSI B350 PC MATE ATX AM4 Motherboard  ($81.99 @ B&H)
Memory: Team Dark 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-3000 Memory  ($99.99 @ Newegg)
Storage: Kingston HyperX Fury 240GB 2.5" Solid State Drive  ($80.99 @ Amazon)
Video Card: EVGA GeForce GTX 1070 8GB SC GAMING ACX 3.0 Black Edition Video Card  ($379.99 @ Newegg)
Case: be quiet! Pure Base 600 (Black/Silver) ATX Mid Tower Case  ($79.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Power Supply: SeaSonic 520W 80+ Bronze Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply  ($56.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Total: $997.49

A build that has a slightly better CPU, double the RAM, and at least around 30% faster GPU with the sacrifices only being the lack of a window and a worse CPU cooler (and maybe a slightly louder PSU, but it probably isn't by much).

You see what I'm saying?

Now I understand, LTT was sponsored by be quiet!. But that doesn't excuse recommending a build to possibly a MILLION people that could've been 30% faster for the EXACT SAME PRICE. Now yes, not a million people are going to lose out on that, but at least a few hundred people will PROBABLY use this as a base for their next pc. Instead, you could've used a $30 cooler from be quiet!. Or maybe could've used the same cooler, psu, and case in a $1500 build guide where you would be using a 7700k, where the parts would actually MAKE SENSE.

The Ryzen 5/3 "previewed" videos were also a fail in a similar way, but those didn't cost people performance/money and you guys truly learned your lesson from those.

But this? This is just misleading/hurting your OWN VIEWERS by costing them performance because of sponsorships. This is just bad, honestly. It's a new low, and I hope you guys will fix this, possibly by doing a followup video with a BETTER parts list using a 1600+1070.

I wasn't really bothered by the thumbnails, and the Ryzen 5/3 previewed video seemed to teach you guys a lesson, but this is just flat out bad. I don't have words for how low you guys have gone in this video, to recommend people to spend money on useless things (like the CPU cooler) because of sponsorships.

Again, I don't have anything against sponsorships, I know this is how quite a bit of your money is made, but when sponsorships mean you are HURTING your viewers, that's just flat out bad.

I hope someone at LMG sees this, since you guys really need to reverse your mistake.

EDIT: And for Ryzen, you can't make the argument that this was filmed before Ryzen 5 was launched, since you had a disclaimer in the video about the rx 580 which was launched a few weeks after Ryzen.

I agree. Was pretty surprised with some choices.wtf

Title should have been imo, LTT 2017 $1000 build.

LTT Build Guides obviously aren't just "how to build a pc" guides. Otherwise they wouldn't have a crap ton of them. They're more like "Guides to a pc in XX price range and how to build it."

And you have to include the silent part or it COMPLETELY doesn't make sense IMO.

I didn't read all the comments here, but one thing to consider is this was filmed well before Ryzen 5 was released. I watched this build guide on Floatplane over two weeks ago and he was teasing this build guide on Twitter a week or two before that.

Even so, I've said it before but they put a disclaimer about using a 580 instead of a 480 in the video, so why couldn't they do the same for Ryzen 5?

I thought it was good and it would of been a big help for me if it was posted before I installed my own Dark Rock 3. Great and beautiful cooler, but very annoying to install, with very poor instructions.

Except it's a waste of money when you're using it on a locked i5 and mobo. If you need to stick to be quiet!, get something like a pure rock instead. For the purposes of a 7600 it'll be just as quiet.

Well didn't they achieve that? A build for $1,000. While a lot don't agree on the parts. It's still a $1,000 build.

The title can't be silent because it wasn't focus on silence, even though the sponsor is Be Quiet!, where it means "silent", but it's more about the brandname rather than actual silence.

Yes Be Quiet!, is all about silence, but to add silence to the title, will draw more complaints from those who's going to argue, there are even more silent machines than the one, they built, like the Calyos PC.

Basically there will always be those who are never satisfied with either side of things.

Yes they did, but my point was it was a HORRIBLY priced out build for that price. The choices for some of the parts wouldn't make ANY sense unless the build was focused on silence, hence why I was saying that.

If it's a $1000 silent pc, Calyos isn't an argument since it's way more expensive.

What my point is, this build guide is HORRIBLY priced out EXCEPT if you're trying to make it AS SILENT as possible for $1000. Without throwing performance completely out the door. In any other light it makes zero sense.

Even so, be quiet! has cheaper CPU coolers and power supplies they coulda chose instead, making it make even less sense to use the sponsorship as an argument.

You cannot deny that this build is horribly priced out unless you're trying to put silence as a priority while still having a decent gaming machine. Hence why I'm saying the video would only make sense if the title was "$1000 Silent Gaming PC Build Guide"

Whatever is not explained immediately by the fact that it was clearly marked as sponsored by Be quiet can be easily explained by the other well known fact about LMG and any other hardware people out there: they are not out buying parts every time they do a build this was probably just shit that was lying around on the inventory and not being used for benchmarks or editor updates.

I mean are you guys forgetting this is the channel lately famous for scrapyard wars? Did you not expect them to recycle some review samples they had around? I'm surprised we didn't see components with fucking glitter on them still from the Christmas builds.

not a good excuse they could easily get a 1600 and a rx580 sample.

I didn't watch the video all the way through, but for $1000 I expected a 1070 at least, you could probably do a 580 build for around $700-$800

My rig cost me $1005+Windows and it has an R5 1600 and an RX 580.  Below are the costs

R5 1600: $220

Corsair H100i v2 (used+bracket): $80

Gigabyte AB350M Gaming 3: $100

2x8GB DDR4 3000MHz $100

Cooler Master Master Case Pro 3: $70

Seasonic M12II: $55

Powercolor RX 580: $230

Crucial MX300 525GB SSD: $150

Windows 10 Pro: $35

Total: $1005+35 for Windows
