A Rant about LTT's Latest $1000 Build Guide

With that in mind, one thing people are forgetting with their builds, is that Linus SPECIFICALLY wanted to do this build without SALES OR MAIL-IN REBATES. Why? Because sale prices change frequently. Mail-in rebates expire. He wanted to do the build with regular pricing.

Is it still a shitty build? Yeah, a bit. But if you consider, make a $1000 USD build without using any sales or MIR's, you'll find that his build is a lot closer to the mark. The cooler is still a waste, and the CPU choice is questionable, but it's at least somewhat better in that context.

I never factor in rebates, and none of the builds posted about have any extraordinary sales going on -- the parts are all priced at what they are normally available for.

And iirc Linus' build comes out to around $930, so it's not like its using MSRPs, which is the only way to avoid sale pricing.

But they do have sales. Each individual sale may not be very high but they can still add up. Never the less, it's still something to consider when looking at pricing, as PCPartPicker finds the best price (which is more often then not, a sale price) by default.

For Sale: Meraki Bundle

iPhone Xr 128 GB Product Red - HP Spectre x360 13" (i5 - 8 GB RAM - 256 GB SSD) - HP ZBook 15v G5 15" (i7-8850H - 16 GB RAM - 512 GB SSD - NVIDIA Quadro P600)

My point is nothing is out of the norm -- something will always be on sale at a similar pricepoint.

Perhaps - but you're making assumptions. By not using sale pricing, at least that exact "build" will still be a good guide after whatever sales are over.

Of course, you can swap out parts for similar stuff on sale, but it's not always that easy or clear cut - especially for novice builders. They may swap in some other part that's on sale that is far less good or unreliable, etc.

Doing a build guide with sale pricing means that guide's price is good for exactly however long the sale lasts for.

That's why I wouldn't factor in any massive sale prices, but none of these prices are out of the norm, on any given day you're basically guaranteed to see prices that are at least this good if not better. I'll go Intel since Ryzen wasn't an option at the time.

7600k - $220

Cooler - $30

Z270 board - $110

8GB ram - $50

SSD - $60

HDD - $50

580 - $230

1070 - $360

Case - $80

PSU - $60

------------

580 Total -- $890

1070 Total -- $1020

7600K - $240

Z270 board - $115

8GB RAM - $50

SSD 120/128GB - $60 (Can go as low as $47 but those cheap ones are either sketchy or not great performance)

HDD 1TB - $50

RX 580 8GB - $230

GTX 1070 - $380 (For a full size aftermarket cooler - $360 is the price of a half-height single fan micro-sized 1070, or $370 for reference cooler)

Case - $90

PSU - $60

These are based on NewEgg.com cheapest regular pricing (As in, if it's on sale, what's the listed regular price)

580: $925

1070: $1075

So that's not necessarily a huge difference, but it is significant enough to note. Plus another $100 for Windows, and someone may not have the extra budget for the price going up $50 or $75.

Linus' build didn't include windows and yes, the non-sales prices are higher, but something is virtually always on sale -- especially with GPUs. Plus, even a single fan 1070 is good.

LTT alwaysALWAYS prices in USD, unless they specifically specify otherwise. Any video that quotes pricing, is USD pricing. This is the case now, and has always been the case. Why? Because predominantly, most of his users are Americans. So the fact that LMG is a Canadian Company is, frankly, irrelevant. So it's not a $1000 CAD build. It's a $1000 USD ($1365 CAD) build. and he shouldn't need to specify (though it wouldn't hurt, if he added USD to build prices in the future).

Now back on topic:

I already made a build list that doesn't make use of sales or rebates, has a 1070, and is $1000, too lazy to dig it up but it's somewhere in the thread:P

The problem is that the build is horrible (and I don't use that word lightly here) even if you factor in all those things. The build would have been bad 5 months ago or however long ago it was intended to come out.

It's a shit build. Don't defend it.
