Actually they probably have a contract through Dell and they needed more powerful machines so Dell sent them Alienware PCs. It happens a lot actually

this is probably a thing, universities tend to be a big enough shipped volume to suit a large buisiness contract, covering all issues with their desktops, servers, (laptops?).

all of this for a foreseen lifespan during which, essentially, it is guaranteed that the system will not fail beyond repair.

 

chances are those machines needed more horsepower than their buisiness lineup had available, so they tossed some alienwares at it, which actually, recently seem to be on the way up again in terms of quality and engineering.

one thing that you have to put out of your head: a university will NOT do custom builds, it is a waste of time and resources, and a technical support disaster.

I'm aware. Just saying that they probably get a steal on them compared to what it would cost for someone, like yourself or I, to build one.

chances are it wasnt a notable difference, but what is different is that if they have a maintenance contract with dell, they can essentially send them an email "yo, this one is derp" and the next day a dell representative is on site to get the machine sorted out, all covered within the contract, and *thats* where the money is.

essentially, once you start shipping such a large volume that having "the bad luck of the draw" is a given, you stop shopping for cheapest, but instead start shopping for who is the best technical support contract.

So what you are saying, is that Unis don't look for the best hardware or price for that hardware, but rather the best support in case something goes terribly wrong.

it's not a case of *if* something goes wrong, they have that many systems that it's a matter of "when" one goes belly up.

 

chances are that the prices per system are within margin anyways, but just in the amount of headache saved when a problem gets solved effortlessly is so much value that they essentially dont mind the up-front cost.

i've recently worked with proliant G9's, they were decked out to roughly ~$25K a piece (something like 20 units), now, that would probably be easily $2K less per server if they'd buy a supermicro chassis (which for all intents and purposes is the freaking exact same thing) and stuff the hardware in it themselves, the difference is that when a HP pops a power supply, it's a matter of sending an email "in rack G22 the server named 'soma' power supply 2 shows faulty", and the next day a HP representative is at the door with a new power supply, comes to slot it in, and is off again. i guess i dont need to explain how much easier this is (and less time consuming, by which.. time really is money for a company) than having to deal with it yourself.

When it comes to universities, school gets computers either for dirt cheap, or they are donated. Companies don't mind doing this, as it is advertising for them. If you see a nice Dell system, you are happy with the build quality and all, you might consider buying a Dell system for home, or recommend one.

 

Your university probably has a Gaming program, so Dell donated or provided for dirt cheap these Alienware computers.

They probably didn't order them specifically. 

If they ordered a few hundred top tier desktops for productivity dell most likely just sent them. 

Easier for Dell to send out something pre built in a warehouse than to customise and build upgraded standard varieties on their site.

The University I am familiar with has a "use it or lose it" policy with budgeting.  They used to spend $3000-$4000 per student desktop PC and required the purchase of a major brand name like Dell. 

 

Now, as we all know on LTT, $3000-$4000 really goes a long ways these days.  So the university keeps buying increasingly powerful machines (relatively speaking), that are completely disproportionate to what the students need, simply to consume their entire budget for PC's in a given year.

 

For instance, their new desktop PC's, used for word processing and spreadsheets (ie: Microsoft Office) are new Dells with 64gb DDR4 RAM, 1Tb SSDs, and i7-6600 processors. 

 

We all know that those apps can run perfectly fine on a 5-year-old Celeron with 4-8gb RAM.  There really was no reason to purchase much better than some low-end Intel NUC, but they needed to blow their budget.

The support is a big point. Even with a small IT staff, keeping spare parts in Stock is expensive, as well as spending the time diagnosing and fixing anything that fails.

Nah, Design and Architecture studios, with a separate render farm. We also have access to about 100 top spec iMacs for the Graphic Design students.

I believe the engineering labs don't have super powerful gear, but I haven't been in for about 2 and a half years.

Same here, Solidworks, 3dsMax, Keyshot (keyshit as I call it, I prefer max) plus a bit of Maya stuff and of course, many many hours of Photoshop and InDesign.

Our engineering school is focussed more on electronic stuff (they offer software, networking and electronic engineering). We don't do any like civil engineering, you gotta go to Auckland for that stuff. So they don't need the rendering power so much. We do, however, which is why I have a Xeon :P

With this thread in mind, I checked what complab for geography dep had. i7 2600, 16gb RAM and Radeon HD 6970. I think they are from 2011 or something like that. HPs lease machines. Haven't been in new geology deps lab yet, might be some newer hardware there.
