I wonder what implications this has for CPU cooling.  Can you imagine a CPU cooler that just takes all that extra heat and uses it to supplement the PSU to reduce draw from the socket?    no waste heat in the room, lower power bills, no more grinding up silverware for your custom loops..

 

 

I'm not an expert! In fact I'm usually just 1 google search ahead of you.

By the time this actually exists commercially and has actually useful efficiency CPUs will use less power than a potato.

This is just another one of those research articles of stuff that we will never see for another half century.

To be clear, are we talking something that extracts energy from the natural movement of heat, like a Stirling engine, or is it actually converting the heat directly into electricity?

 

And if it's the latter, is it at any appreciable rate?  or is this like, a few watts at best?

Yeah I always found it silly we spend millions researching what gives us cancer instead of spending it on a cure.

Textbooks from the 80s also heralded them as the next thing to replace all our Rankine and Brayton cycle systems. Um we kinda already do that don't we? We burn some sort of fossil fuel which heats water which pressurized steam moves a turbine.

 

So I guess this would do it more efficiently without involving the water?

Pretty much. These already exist commercially though, it is a half billion dollar a year industry. I won't be holding my breath for the release of the more expensive slightly more efficient TEGs that may result.

If you stick one between the CPU and cooler to generate electricity, your CPU will most likely thermal throttle (or crash) due to the significant decrease in thermal conductivity and heat dissipation. However, you might be able to run some LED lighting off the power that is generated.

It's pretty hard to cure something when you have no idea what's causing it. Cancers vary wildly. What works well on one may have little effect on another.

Moreover, it's definitely not news. Seebeck effect was first discovered almost 200 years ago. The article is just about one way of making seebeck effect based cells and use them for various applications, but the efficiency is still very low and this technology still needs heat dissipation to work

While the approach may have an use, even if it doubles current efficiencies for that type of devices, it won't even come close to have an efficiency worth the trouble, meaning you would get less than 5% of the waste heat actually converted into electricity

Yep, even nuclear plants are just juiced up steam turbines - they only use fission to heat up the water. The outliers would be wind and solar power.

Right. There will never be such a thing as 'The cure for cancer', since there are countless different kinds of cancer that all work differently and can vary widely in treatment.

 

Just consider how different the treatment is for leukemia when compared to other types of cancer.

Not only because of that. I believe the main reason for never having 'The not cure cancer' is because currently, it's making good money. For those in charge, there is no reason to change the income. That's right, the ill ones are no reason for them...

Not only because of that. I believe the main reason for never having 'The not cure cancer' is because currently, it's making good money. For those in charge, there is no reason to change the income. That's right, the ill ones are no reason for them...

At the same time, if any 1 company found a cure for some type of cancer, they could charge absolutely insane prices.  And they would make insane amounts of money, until another company figured out a way as well.  There are too many companies in too many countries trying to find the cure.  And the first one to find a cure will reap huge rewards.  Insurance companies would pay astronomical rates for a cure, since it would likely be cheaper than treatment.

I'm saying you can't create a cure until you know what is actualy causing the cancer. I'm not talking about prevention. The comment I replied to talked about spending money on research into the causes instead of making cure. I'm saying that's exactly what you have to do.

The treatment for cancers can even be different person to person due to the nature of cancer and how they arise from mutations. None of that can be solved without first having a clear understanding of whats going on.
