Popular porn sites blocked in Philippines

2 minutes ago, Dabombinable said:

This is easily solved. Simply change your DNS. Australia did the same thing with sites such as thepiratebay, and within half an hour it was shown to be utterly pointless (BTW, switching DNS in Australia helps get rid of the connection issues with Optu$, and Helstra-so some people here didn't even need to do anything to remove the block)

Governments will learn how little control they have on the internet, eventually. Until then we'll backdoor, workaround and exploit our way into freedom! AHAHAHHA!

As I said above, any ideas on how to enforce porn to people of age? Here's one: require an online payment if only a small one. At least that will mean that the minor will have to go out of their way to steal a credit card to do it, and then they'll get caught and into big trouble. I'm not against the idea of porn only for those who own a credit card of their own.

And thanks to security certificates the tech we have today would help mitigate sites exploiting this measure.

I don't think it should be enforced, but rather educated upon. But for the sake of argument and there was no other option..

requiring anything that gives a proof of age. Bassicly you prove your age to the government through various and easy ways. Then they give you a token (a key) that allows you to unlock (age)+ websites. You can set it to unlock for however long you want.

Here is how you switch the DNS (I did things from the router end and on my computer-its possible even with heavily restricted routers):

https://developers.google.com/speed/public-dns/docs/using

List of free DNS, just use Google's instructions from above:

https://www.keycdn.com/blog/best-free-dns-hosting-providers/

This reminded me of a hypothetical situation:

Assuming I'm a PhD student doing research on sexuality and I am sitting inside Starbucks. While it's true that I can bypass the government block by using a virtual private network, people can still see what I do by glancing at my back. If a legislator successfully proposed that people browsing porn should be arrested, I could get incarcerated if let's say a barista ratted me out to the authorities even though I'm doing research and not being a sexual predator. Not to mention that there's now a probable cause because the barista saw my browser tabs filled with naked people and images that suggests pornography. While I can have myself defended by an attorney on court, that will just cause me more expenses and a delay in my research.

That's why this porn ban is silly.

Just by the way, I don't think any of the people here are suggesting that the ban is not silly. Just proposing solutions.

After reading the article, I tried going to a porn site and it still gives me full access. It turns out my ISP Globe Telecom hasn't enforced it yet. The other ISP's PLDT (and it's wireless carrier Smart) already implemented the ban.

I'm thinking this really comes down to a reputation thing. If you ban the sites there's no way you'll be on the list next year.

They're so blindly religious they must be scared to death of what the Pope thought when he read that.

I agree with your argument. But being devils advocate; cars are restricted to adults (licenses). Alcohol is restricted (identification). Pornography on the internet is currently not restricted.

Any kid can steal their parents car keys and drive around if they want. It happens all the time. It's not like the car doesn't start if you don't have a license. You just need the keys.

And as for alcohol, do you have any idea how easy it is to get hold of alcohol even when you aren't old enough? Again, happens all the time. You really can't argue that "it's hard to get alcohol if you're not 18 so it's not a problem, unlike porn!".

I will agree that the car analogy is very rare, but the alcohol one is not. Hell, it's probably almost as common for people under the age to drink alcohol as it is underage people watching porn. The difference is that drinking alcohol is far more damaging and yet nobody is doing anything about it.

Indeed. We need an age cap on being an elected official, as well as term and seat limits.

Well their terms are already limited, though any of them should only be in "power" for at most 8 years. Or at least have a separate department to help the rest of the government understand what the hell they are doing (kind of like the one the US government had a while ago).

The US does not have universal term limits. Each state decides how long their "Representatives" will last. With a number of states having no limits at all.

It's hard to get intelligent people into an elected position, because they're usually busy doing something useful.

eh blocking porn to prevent child pornography is a pretty bad idea imo. honestly i would love more research into CGI child pornography because it doesn't hurt anyone directly and out markets a lot of real child pornography while it enables for example the government to dispatch a child safety kit to the watcher with places they can call or go to if they fear they can't control their urges. but then maybe that ignites curiosity for the real stuff so like i said i would love some proper research into it.

I disagree. You can have legit porn sites go through the government, and if they start stealing credit cards you have their info because of their registration. This is what https certificates were made for.

That's as much of a security risk as requiring credit cards for online sales, for instance.
