Whoever came up with the versioning system where 2.10 is a later version than 2.9 should be prosecuted for crimes against logic.

10 is greater than 9.  It's very common, especially when you use major/minor/bugfix.

They aren't decimals.  The periods just separate integers.  major.minor.bugfix.build.

It's sorta justified if you are a someone like LMG. If you go one more step programs are in the $10,000-$70,000 range.

Krita and Gimp want to be very different from each other though. Krita also started because they were not happy with the features Gimp had, so I doubt they will go together (at least any time soon)

I find it's easier to save in specific formats now. In the past I occasionally saved items into a compressed file before having a full uncompressed project file. Now I never forget with the save as and export as functions.

I worded it poorly. I'm not talking about creating new files.  If I edit a png, I can't just hit save. It tries to save it as a project file.  I have to actually export it and save it as a new png. At least that was the case in 2.8.  There's no overwriting unless you're working with project files. It's super annoying.

if you export as and put in the same file name, it will try to overwrite (of course asking permission first). I find that it helps me with not overwriting the original files with edited files.

Because they're software for large scale industrial use and they can get away with charging that much? I mean if you have high end animation software that's being used for movie development where they're making millions off a single movie, you kind of need to charge that much since you're only going to sell a few lisences of it.

The applications that Sam is referring to aren't intended for your use at home, or even for small business to use.  They're the kinds of things that large-scale production houses use and would be perfectly useless on your computer at home (or on your office desk).  Given that, their justification is a simple one that works for capitalism everywhere: they charge what the market can bear.  The target customers for such high end production software can pay that kind of money.

 

Now I think Sam's original point was a tad disingenuous.  The $50/month charge from Adobe is for their entire suite of applications which includes their video, audio, special effects, photo, website, etc editing applications.  All of them.  Photoshop, the thing folks like to compare GIMP to, is $5/month and it also includes Lightroom.

 

Each person has to make up their mind as to whether US$60 annually to use a pro image editing (along with a photo editing/organization) app is worth it to them.  If it isn't, use GIMP or the other alternatives.
