like a 480?

Well the RX 470 is the cut down variant of the 480, so yeah. I'm pretty sure the 490 name will not be used though because it leaves no room for naming now that the x seems to have been abandoned on the full fat versions of their chips. I'm expecting that we might see a Fury V to denote Vega.

No it is not... What in the RX lineup competes with the 1070? But whatever its the internetz everyone else is wrongo.

And?

A RX480 more or less is equal to a 1060...thus a RX490 would be appropriate to be as fast as the 1080.

Looking at my signature are we now? Well too bad there's nothing here...

The R9 Fury. While no RX card competes the Fury and Fury X haven't been discontinued. They don't match it on performance (except DX12 but I mantain that's still an exception) but they exist still.

I'm pretty sure this was already posted...and their new card isn't supposed to be anything ground breaking, unfortunately.

I thought the RX 490 was supposed to be the new architecture designed to c ok meters against 1080.

It probably will....On some DX12 games....not all of them....has to be a full moon too to replicate the hype benchmarks.

And a multi sub zero liquid cooled loop for the GPU.... so it can run under 80C on idle

I don't think so. I think that's coming in the new year.

You're gonna have to fill me in on your POV here because from where i'm standing leaving the $350~-ish open to the 1070 (which is much better than a 1060) is a seriously bad move and it makes little sense to have a 490 compete with a 1080 at a price-point that's probably more than double the 480 (because if the 490 does compete with the 1080, there's no way they'll price it against the 1070)

Maybe there's a cutdown version of it...it doesn't have to follow the same naming scheme you know :P

You can allways drop a updated 480.. lets call it 481 and up the price as it now sits above the 1060

What are you basing that off of?  Are you going to go batty with your expectations again like you did for the 480 before launch?

Why wouldn't theygo with the existing nomenclature and call it the RX 480X?  Like the R9 380X?  Or the R9 280X?  481 just makes it sound like you've never even heard of AMD before. o.O   And an RX 480X even makes sense, you'd make it have the same CU count as the RX 390X only a bit more powerful and much more efficient and leaving room in the 490 and 490X range for more higher end offerings.

Or, you know, the 485? Like The 285 or the 295(x2)...

Also, everyone seems to be comparing it to a 1080. Why not a 1070? If it can do 1070 performance (or near to 1070 performance) at $350~, they could make quite a large profit.

Because nerds only care about the top tier products.  Oh sure, most of them can't afford it the top tiers and will actually buy a 1070 since it makes much more financial sense in terms of value for your dollar, but then they'll argue on the internet that what AMD has to do is compete against the 1080 that most of them didn't buy anyway.

Because you're totally right, the 1070 is the sweet spot and it's the smart money, it's also the real battleground when it comes to where consumers will spend their dollars, but internet spec nerds usually ignore that. :P

Did we not agree that AMD numbering system sucks. Adding a number for the next revision makes sense. You got nine big revisions possible before you run into trouble.

AMD's high end card can niw hopefully compete with Pascal 1070/1080/Titan X from Nvidia

Unless something changed, AMD already revealed the RX 490 (the design for which was finalized a long time ago) performance-level with this image:

AMD-rx-400-series-nomenclature.jpg

AMD considers the 470 and 480 to be 1440p cards, with the qualification being that the games being played are DOTA 2, LOL, etc. By the same standard, AMD considers a 490 to be a 4K card. I would expect the 490 to perform in 1440p the same as the 480 does in 1080p, and probably around the performance of a GTX 1070 in DX11 titles.

Analysis of AMD / Nvidia GPU tech and performance compared with AMD / Nvidia sales:

Bottom line: Nvidia is winning on the marketing front, and for many years has massively outsold AMD, even when AMD has had superior tech and offered vastly more performance per dollar.
