Panasonic Develops new IPS Panel to rival OLED

Panasonic has developed a new type of IPS liquid crystal panel that has a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio, as well as a peak brightness of up to 1000 nits. Many LCD displays often advertise such contrast ratios which are measured against a dynamic backlight and are essentially meaningless, but in this case Panasonic is talking about the static contrast ratio of the display, which only reaches as high as 2000:1 on a typical IPS display. Little information is available about the technology at this point, but Panasonic claims that it is achieved by implementing pixel-by-pixel control of backlight intensity and that panels featuring the tech can be produced using contemporary LCD manufacturing facilities.

I'm all for this, if we can get close to OLED quality displays for a small premium over regular IPS displays.

I was wondering about this. Why don't we have something like a MEMS shutter to physically block the light rather than guide it elsewhere?

 

Although the first thing that came to my mind with a "light modulator" thingy is a technology I worked with one time. We called it a quantum well modulator (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electro-absorption_modulator). It was used to modulate a laser that was shot at a device and reflected back to the transmitter.

I think there's manufacturing problems with giving an individual LED backlight to every pixel. Don't think you can have individual LEDs scaled down that much.

OLEDs don't use individual LED backlights.. the pixels themselves produce the light. That's where OLED comes from, organic light-emitting diodes (LEDs)

yup I've actually been waiting to make the jump from 1080p to 4K till we had decently priced 4K HDR monitors and the ability to play movies/netflix on PC. I don't play that much, but I do consume the vast majority of my media on my PC.

Micro LEDS are probably the future though. Everything good from OLED without the organic downgrade. Should see more of it at CES next month.

I love Panasonic TV's. Great design and always a company that likes to stick to a technology and improve upon it for a very long time. Panasonic was one of the last companies to stop using plasma in their TV's but greatly improved the technology over many many years.

I agree that microleds down to pixel level would wear out differently, but I disagree on your point that burn-in would set in just as it did with early OLED displays. That's not how burn-in works.

It was caused because phosphor in old CRTs would wear out unevenly on the screen surface with a static image(fun fact that's why the screensaver was invented), and on modern OLEDs it doesn't leave that same image burned in but it causes different color subpixels to produce less light over time because the organic compounds used don't wear out at the same rate even with a plain white image. That doesn't "burn" an image onto the screen, but it affects overall brightness and color accuracy. 

 

I should also point out modern LEDs are L70 rated at over 50.000 hours. You'd literally have to have your TV on 24/7 for 5+ years to see them decrease in brightness by 30%. Whereas OLEDs are currently rated at around 10.000 hours for 50% brightness, so within 3-5 years of regular usage your TV ser will have lost half its brightness and have significant color accuracy problems. I'm all for OLED, I think the tech is great. The picture quality is there already. We just need a couple more generations to solve the reliability problems and figure out how to manufacture them faster and cheaper.

My Dell IPS 1440p made me forget about that box under table. Screen is probably best part of pc. 

I hate LCD phone screens they burn my eyes. Have had 2 oled screens and 1 lcd on phone. Never again lcd on phone.

They key thing is LG doesn't own the IPS. Its licensed. They cant sue because they didn't think of it first. IPS is used by many companies, this is whats called being innovative. It just like OLED vs Quantum Dot, this will just be another standard that you have to consider when buying a new screen, thats all.

It can leave a distinct image depending on what you do, i.e. showing the same image on a part of the screen for huge periods of accumulated time. You can see it pretty easily if you go to look at devices with OLED screens on display in stores, which show the same demo on the screen continuously when idle. Now you'd think "but no person actually uses their devices like that" but I can easily see it happening with the taskbar, or browser bookmark bar, the red X in the corner of every window, etc.

I really love the level of blacks on my phone's amoled screen, so if this will be reasonably priced and the input lag isn't any worse than on standard IPS, I'm sold.

iirc the only OLED monitor that has been announced was Dell's 32 inch 4K HDR 120Hz 5k USD monster, which btw was supposed to come out in March and here we are in December and it still isn't out. I smell vaporware...

Anyhow they had mentioned that they had a "pixel-shifting algorithm" and a distance sensor so the screen turns off when you're not sitting in front of it, as well as a software suit to prevent any sort of burn-in and prolong the life of the monitor.
