SSD Price Hikes And Shortages Are Leading To HDD Shortage...Go figure

It's me!

So, SSD prices are shooting up, so HDD sales shot up, and now there is a pending HDD shortage. I guess I will just buy some old school tape for storage :)

Quote

Now the shortage is in full swing: DRAMeXchange reported that the average price of MLC SSDs rose this quarter between 6%-10%, while TLC SSDs also rose 6%-9%. M any analysts are predicting SSD prices to increase 20-25% over the next few months .

Quote

To make matters worse, although HDDs unexpectedly had the biggest quarter-over-quarter recovery in seven years, according to Trendfocus, now the HDD industry is beginning to exhibit the early signs of "tightened" supply--which means there could be shortages and higher prices in that segment as well.

A shortage usually results in price jumps, and almost all SSDs are already spiking.

Prices look pretty stable to me right now...maybe they'll spike once the current stocks have run out for retailers.

Got my 850 EVO on sale last week and the price just jumped by a holy cow 5 of my Canadian Rupees.

It was black Friday and is holiday soon...

it has absolutely nothing to do with that

at the start of the year, a lot of NAND factories started transitioning to 3D NAND but haven't supplemented production with planar NAND - this lead to a decline in both 3D and planar NAND production

few manufacturers have kept a stockpile and are now profiting from it selling NAND at increased prices - Psion, in particular, kept a stockpile of NAND valued at 1/4 billion USD

it's estimated that current shortages in 3D and planar NAND won't be fulfilled for the most part of 2017

I didn't say that was wrong at all...

But when I think of it I saw much more HDDs on sale last weekend than I saw SSDs. But won't change the numbers that much but will change it a little bit :)

Plus we've known this has been coming for a long time anyway

This past summer flash was the cheapest it's ever been, and it'll only get worse from here for a while

the Note7 recall didn't helped matters either, getting the phones recalled twice - hundred million+ GB of NAND went up in smoke

Hmm, they say they started reporting on it back in May so I doubt it. depending when they actually wrote this compared to publishing it, they could have even wrote it before the sales :P

I don't see any price hikes. Don't know where tom's is getting those info from.it might be outdated, just like their mobo review on a z97 board when skylake was already out.

I noticed the ADATA 480GB SSD I normally buy for 100-110 USD is about 130 right now, I've been waiting to see what prices do before either waiting for them to drop again or reshop for what's the best value for me.

muh specs

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it.

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff.

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch
