AT&T to limit video quality by default in hopes to help customers reduce data usage

American Telephone and Telegraph, more commonly known as AT&T, is one of the largest telecommunication conglomerates in the USA

They currently provide over 300 million people with 4G LTE networks

Today, they announced that they would limit the quality of mobile video content by early 2017

 A new feature called "Stream Saver" will throttle video to DVD resolution of about 480p. Customers will be able to opt out of Stream Saver, but it will be enabled by default—even for customers with unlimited data, AT&T told Ars. AT&T will notify customers once Stream Saver has been activated and provide instructions for turning it off and back on, the company's announcement said.

Customers on limited data plans may appreciate the feature, as it could help them stay under their data caps.

 

Not all hope is lost though given that users will still be able to turn off Stream Saver to view higher resolution

The Federal Communications Commission yesterday told AT&T that this arrangement may violate net neutrality rules.

 

I personally don't know how to react to this though it is expected given that I'm not an AT&T customer

Sprint and T-Mobile have also started doing the same thing; they aim to help users reduce their usage to avoid paying higher fees

Not that my provider (yes, full disclosure I’m with T-Mobile) really cares, because they sell me the aforementioned no-compromises package already. I can tether and watch video however I like.

T-mobile does deep packet inspection and throttles all kinds of videos unless you pay a fee to disable it. 

Hopefully they, and AT&T gets sued into oblivion because this is exactly the type of thing net neutralitywas suppose to stop.

If you can disable it i don't see it that bad, although im guessing they are betting on peoples ignorant's for this to pay off by enabling it by default.

That may be the case, but luckily it's not on T-Mobile everywhere. As someone who works for T-Mobile/T-Com, I know they don't do it in my country for instance.

The ability to google properly is a skill of its own.

It's one thing to have this feature and offer people who enable it the option to save money. My problem with this though is that they turn it on by default and don't cut your bill or anything. A lot of people are probably going to ignore any letters sent to them by AT&T thinking its just more junk mail so they won't know about this feature being auto-enabled for them.

This will save the ones who watch HD streams on their phones when they should know better and have a low bandwidth cap of like 1GB to 5GB.

But on the other hand, it's more likely to just be ATT unable to cope with the ever increasing data demand of their customers and they are now resorting to this to try and delay(again) their long overdue network upgrade.

Funny thing is they aren't trying to delay their network upgrades, they are just too stupid to know how to do it right. I've worked with their business 4G people and it took them weeks to just provision a few SIM cards properly for a lab environment, I still shudder thinking about them trying to do the same for business rollouts with thousands of SIM cards. The failed 3 different times to provision ours properly before finally getting it right. Their plan for QoS was to literally have a list of every endpoint to endpoint combination handed to them so they could provide QoS that way. So for enterprise customers who wanted to say provide QoS for phone calls over LTE, they would have to give a sheet of 10s of thousands of phones and every possible combination that needed QoS. They were confused when we told them how terrible an idea this was and then would call us asking questions about basic LTE provisioning like we were somehow on their payroll.

How about unlimited data and you upgrade your infrastructure to handle it.

What does Sprint do to their customers? I have unlimited data with Sprint and I've heard that in the past they were slowing down people's connections but I don't know what's currently going on with them.

 

I honestly hate Sprint and would love to move on to Verizon due to cell tower reasons. My own flipping house is a dead spot for crying out loud. The only thing keeping me back is the fact that I get unlimited data with Sprint and I don't with Verizon.

It is usefull since it will prevent a lot of people going over their datacaps on mobile and personaly i never watch a video at 1080p when i want to watch a video on a phone because i cant even see the difference between 1080 and 720p on a 5ish inch screen but 480p is a bit shit, and for f**k sake just get better infrastructure and give better mobile dataplans to your costumers for the same price you cheap f**kers, we all know they earn a metric shitton while doing the minimal improvements to their network

Maybe a bit joking, but Youtube should just mess around for a month or so and re-encode all their 480p content at 10mbps or something ridiculous and lower their 720p to 1-2 mbps from whatever is now (3-6 mbps if i remember correctly)... maybe have special 480p encodes just for AT&T ...

This doesn't seem bad as long as disabling it does so permanently. For people who don't notice they may see that they are using less data and change their plan and for people who care they can just turn it off. No point in using bandwidth on people who can't tell the difference. Ideally they just upgrade their networks though but then they would have to buy fewer arenas.

All they would have to do is inspect packets then limit your speed = lower resolution nothing to do with modifying pages.

Damn I have to sign into AT&T's website to disable an option in order to watch 4K video on a 5 inch screen? Oh the humanity!

For a lot of people, if not most they won't notice the drop in video quality but they probably will notice a drop in data usage that can now be spent elsewhere. I would only be angry if you had to pay to disable it.
