Given his rhetoric about building walls and banning Muslims etc, how extreme do you think Trump will be?

 

I suspect that he'll be middle of the road when it comes to policy. From what I witnessed, what he spouted was mostly populist bluster, I didn't get the impression he had any intention to follow through. Let alone, would I think he'd be allowed to follow through.

Without getting too political here (good luck with that, am I right?), I want to point out that anyone that wishes to become an American citizen, has the ability to do so. It takes time, it takes effort, but it can be done. Not only that, but allowing people to just bypass the rules and come work as they please, make it unfair for those doing it the right way, does it not? 

 

I won't argue that the cost of living will go up as cheap labor is removed, because chances are it will. HOWEVER, I don't exactly see that as a bad thing, if it means more American workers investing that money back into the economy, rather than sending it to their families abroad. 

 

Mike Rowe did an amazing video where he goes around talking to college kids, asking them about whether or not they'd want to be plumbers and janitors and other "demeaning" jobs, with most of them saying no. He then went on to explain to them how essential these jobs are in society, and how society as a whole would change if these "demeaning" jobs were not performed. Really made me respect those jobs a lot more, and at the same time, reduced the fear I had, about me only amounting to janitorial labor. Taking pride in ones job, no matter how menial, is key. If more American students saw that video, they would probably see things differently, and wouldn't require cheap foreign labor to do it for us.

 

The biggest problem with America right now, is not the politics. It's the people themselves. We all believe ourselves to be destined for greatness, for that slice of "the american dream", and are so consumed by that fantasy that we completely ignore the opportunities and potential that stands right in front of us. Now, I am by no means a wise man on the subject, I am still young myself, but a lot of my peers (aged 20-25) are still unemployed because they refuse to settle for the jobs available in their area. They think that because they have a degree, because they are qualified to use a computer, that they deserve a well paying desk job. They cry foul every single time they are denied employment at such a place, and look for excuses in the darkest places (race, sex, religion, etc) to justify their lack of employment.

 

That being said, i'll avoid politics on this forum from now on. We live in a world where no good comes from talking.

i may be in the minority, but i welcome a Donald Trump Presidency 

 

I came into the united states as a Immigrant, legally. i spent my time and got my citizenship.  What made my blood boil was that it took me 2 years to get my citizenship in terms of paperwork. Illegal immigrants take less than a year, closer to 6 months (spoken to a few). is that fair? i spent 8 years on a permanent resident green card (which took 1 year to get) and later got my citizenship. is it fair? i think not. deport all illegal immigrants. do what is only fair. 

 

as much as i'd hate to say it, Syrian refuges cause problems. they do. look at German for example. i dont need to say anymore 

 

the American people have decided. they are sick of the political machines. the silent majority has spoken the truth. it wont be long until the same starts elsewhere.

Honestly I can see why that appears to be fairly important and a more immediate problem. And as a country if you think it's high priority by all means try to solve that issue.

 

However in the grand scheme of things that's basically a real tiny bit of the equation, your economical interdependence with manufacturing and importing goods from abroad is a much far reaching issue and one that no matter his chest pounding, Trump just can't immediately address without upsetting a very delicate trade balance with us and with China. If he tries to just dissolve NAFTA immediately and break all current commercial deals with China it would cause a massive melt down unlike anything we've seen in history. Think the great depression x100 at least.

 

The thing about globalization is that you really can't easily revert things. Sometimes you can't reverse things at all no matter what it's just a bell you can't unring.

I agree with you wholeheartedly on this. However, if he (and American's in general) want to be less reliant on other countries and bring jobs back, that is a hit they are going to have to take. Quality of life will have to suffer before it gets better. There is no easy way out of this.

No but over an 8 year period he could start to bring back some key areas of industry (Regrettably probably from us here in Mexico) but some of fairly strategic importance like electronics manufacturing he'd need to leave that the fuck alone for a while. Like a good while.

 

Then there's things that just by mere geography depend entirely on foreign relationships and also can't magically be solved like getting oil, minerals, etc.
