Well, with the new COD out on PC let's see how well it fairs:

And on VRAM usage the game seems to try to use as much as it can

You have all seen in the previous pages the R9 Fury X playing the game with ease at 1440p and 1080p, with the game easily using more than the GPUs 4GB of VRAM when additional VRAM capacity is available.  

Simply put Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare will use all the VRAM it can and will fill it with any file that the GPU may need. This often makes the GPU use a lot more VRAM than is necessarily required, but the game can easily run with less than the 8GB of VRAM that it can use in the GTX 1080. 

When a GPU runs out of VRAM in Infinite Warfare the game may change some textures to lower resolution versions automatically, so more VRAM is better, but the games VRAM requirements are not as inflated as the graph below would suggest.

Ohh wow, the Maxwell flagship is getting beaten by a 239 USD card, I do hope this is a driver issue of sorts. Ohh, also unfortunately the game is locked at 125fps on multiplier.

 

Edit: Yeah, the fury X seems to be performing just like the RX 480 as well, and I will investigate the guru3D benchmark as soon as I can.

Exactly.

 

I can believe that there would be some driver/optimization (or lack thereof) nonsense going on that would cause a 480 and a 980Ti to be similar, but then a Fury X should be miles better than the 480.

time to hate on AMD

One day I will be able to play Monster Hunter Frontier in French/Italian/English on my PC, it's just a matter of time... 4 5 6 7 8 9 years later: It's finally coming!!!

Seems to make more sense 980Ti performs similarly to 1070. However, RX480 runs only 10% behind these two cards is rather impressive.

 

BTW, COD is an odd game.

This is the only benchmark that I've seen the 480 beat the 980 ti. However, in those other benchmarks, the 480 is not far behind the fury x, 980 ti and 1070.

They seem ok for now early, yeah drivers will come more optimized later too. Though there was no beta for PC so yeah. The VRAM is funny, I guess it will use as much as it can though.. odd really, I know it's cause of this game series port. So consoles use unified memory and it's something to do with that.

Um captain? Why is the 480 equaling or besting the Fury X? 

 

Oh or is it wrong to me to point how this is probably a crap port that hurts previous generation AMD users just as much as previous generation Nvidia users? Ups! Sowwie!!!

I was about to say, the 980 Ti and GTX 1070 should be performing relatively similar to each other. Was worried a new form of crippleworks already struck Maxwell down as it did Kepler. Didn't want to give my brothers the bad news. 

 

That being said, this is still respectable performance all around the board. A $200-$250 RX480 achieving nearly 100fps at 1080p on average. Combine this with a cheap 1080p 120-144hz freesync monitor with a large enough window to cover the 80fps minimum dips, and you have yourself a very respectable FPS gaming setup for a very low cost. Assuming you don't mind awful TN panels, you can get a 1080p 144hz Freesync (35hz-144hz range) monitor for $200 flat: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01BV1XBEI/

Might have something to do with console games being inherently optimized for GCN because PS4, XBone, PS4 Pro and Xbox Scorpio are AMD through and through. I'm actually pretty surprised Nvidia let's AMD have all of the console hardware contracts, I know there's almost no money in it but eventually this is going bite them in the ass when game programming doesn't rely on API so much and gets closer to the hardware. Like with Mantel, DX12 and Vulkan.
And before you say it, yes, I know the new Nintendo fart tablet runs a Tegra SoC, but performance wise it's all but official it's not even in the same weight class as the base Xbox One, not even talking about PS4, PS4 pro or Xbox Scorpio. Nintendo plays with such a closed hand we're still not 100% sure exactly what hardware is in the Wii U.

Pascal handles DX12 fine, so it's not really an issue. And assuming that to be the case, the Fury X should perform a lot better than it does. There's something screw-y going on with the new CoD.

In fairness to everyone else... they are using a STRIX 480 compared to reference 980ti/1070/1080/Fury X. Now of those cards, the 980ti has BY far the biggest difference in performance between reference and non-reference (up to 15%), so that right there could kill the gap.

The Wii U had a IBM CPU, a AMD GPU and Renesas EEPROM.

IBM CPU is code named Espresso is clocked at 1.24Ghz, AMD supplied the GPU code named Latte which is clocked at 550Mhz, AMDs GPU here is baded on the RV7xx series

I think this is just a case of it being an AMD game, since it was ported from consoles which has a custom AMD SoC in them. Whether this continues is to be seen
