AMD Trolls: Shows R9 290X VS GTX 780 at Nvidia's Event

Ethnod

Well that is just very bold. Its bound to start something that is only just going to get ugly....

AMD showed up ath Nvidia's two-day press event in Montreal. They rented a room across the street and started inviting reviewers over for a peak at the R9 290X vs the Nvidia GTX 780.

Reportedly, Nvidia set up a "bouncer" to block media members from entering, casually reminding them that Nvidia invited them and paid for their tickets.

Here are the results AMD is showing off:

BioShock Infinite (3840x2160, Ultra Settings)

AMD Radeon R9 290X "Quiet Mode" average frame rate: 44.25
Nvidia GeForce GTX 780 average frame rate: 37.67
Tomb Raider (3840x2160, Normal Preset w/ TressFX On Off)

AMD Radeon R9 290X "Quiet Mode" average frame rate: 40.2
Nvidia GeForce GTX 780 average frame rate: 34.5

This is a really dirty trick and it will probably steal a lot of the press surrounding Nvidia's event. I expect Nvidia will figure out a way to get revenge. What do you think?

It's good that it's friendly competition rather than either company doing something that hurts their customers. I find it hilarious when companies do these sorts of things!

Go AMD

Go Nvidia

AMD does this every year at IDF. Set up some PCs in a hotel nearby with some AMD hardware to showcase.

What I love is that they put it against a 780.. I thought this was supposed to be a Titan killer?

I'm sorta wondering if they are having issues with meeting that claim?

The R9 290X is the direct competitor to the GTX 780, but it seems the card is fully capable of going toe-to-toe with the Titan. We won't have definitive proof until the card releases or we get official reviews of the card being benchmarked.

If AMD or NVIDIA wanted to destroy the competition I believe either could do it if they wanted but it makes more sense to slot their products in with equally performing products and use price and bundles to drive competition. Whilst ensuring neither company suffers too much. NVIDIA needs AMD and AMD needs NVIDIA. Fanboying just fuel sales, which is why a lot of their marketing tactics are after you supporting either company as if you are backing a sports team.

For one, those 2 benchmarks show the 280X getting ~15% higher frame rates at 4K. The Titan is not that much faster than the 780, something like 5%-10%. Also it's running in "quiet mode", so we can assume there is a bit more performance to be had.

This is so good for AMD. They need this right now. The Titan ruled the market for like, six months? It's healthy for Nvidia to get some competition, and set their prices back. But I kinda find it weird that AMD chose to battle the 780, and not the Titan. I was sure that the 290X was at the same level as a Titan? And I know this may sound weird, but isn't the 290X AMD's top card, and wouldn't it be fair if it was battling Nvidia's top card, the superior Titan? It's like a Lion fighting a cat. Should have been a Titan instead of the 780.

Sorry for weird spelling errors or poorly written sentences/structure. I'm on my phone.

The performance difference between the 780 and the Titan isn't that big of a gap.

AMD has been known for leaving their top-tier performance to Crossfire solutions. As long as the 290X has a price comparable to that of the 780's, it's only fair that they compete. But given the crossfire issues, AMD has had, this may be a bad tactic unless they get it fully sorted out soon.

God it would be nice IF, to have 290 VS 780, 290x VS Titan, and my main point.................................................................a hidden saucy (non-x 290) dual-gpu they've had under wraps all this time and no leaks.

Its ok... I used an IF

:)

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz
