you are saying chrome and firefox cant play 1080p netflix because they struggle with 720p and since IE can play 1080p netflix by deduction you are saying that IE does not struggle with high resolution video and can handle high resolutions while chrome and firefox cant.

I like how Opera has been around for around 20 years yet the usage rate has stayed a 1.1%-1.5%. While chrome is at 78% and IE is still at 5%!

I'm still sticking to Firefox. It has one feature that none of the other browsers save Edge does that is kind of important to me at the moment: native scaling.

 

I have a 4K monitor with a 1440p monitor. The 4K is 150% scaled of course, but Firefox is the only browser that actually scales all the elements up natively. Every other browser is stuck in interpolation land. And I use my 4K monitor as my regular desktop work monitor.

From what I've seen, Edge seems to make the best use of video acceleration. CPU usage while watching 4k video is, by far the lowest, in Edge, with my GPU's video engine (monitored via gpu-z) actually being used.

Firefox seems to not be working very well on GPU decoding for YouTube, and Chrome defaults to Google's VP9 codecs, which the Surface Book has no hardware support for. Edge has the video codecs to play Netflix video content in 1080p that the company is looking for. Several Netflix board of directors used or are working at Microsoft, and Netflix has worked with Microsoft in the past together. This is why before, Netflix was using Silverlight plugin, as it had the video codec that Netflix wanted in terms of bandwidth and quality, and DRM. This relationship continues with Edge. However, other web browsers can use the codecs Microsoft is using inside Edge.

Surface Book has all the same hardware as an ultrabook. Ultrabook are a massive market these days.

right and i dont understand how that makes edge and IE the better browser. if google disabled youtube from playing about 720P on browsers other than chrome people wont think that makes chrome the best browser that would just make google assholes

I've completely converted to Edge on my laptop and I'm noticing high CPU and RAM usage with just Facebook, and Amazon open (searching for textbooks). Anyone else?

RAM yes only on YouTube and LTT. CPU is the same. Only on YouTube and LTT.

But can I bend the UI to my will? Also, does Microsoft plan to integrate an email client? Can I stack tabs and then tile them to view every stacked tab at once? Does it have a dedicated search bar? Custom themes?

They did with Firefox. Where Chrome was the only web browser that had 60fps videos, and people switched. Now, Firefox supports it.

Nope. Safari on Mac OS on a MacBook is still better than any web browser on Windows under any power management profile. I can get 6 hours of YouTube out of Mac OS and Safari. I get maybe 4 out of Windows and Edge.

Yes Edge does miss many features. It has the core ones, so probably that is why you don't notice, but they are many other features missing that it should have.

It will take time. I think Microsoft focus is more on making the best engine that they can, increase web site compatibility and fix bugs. I mean they are doing the work of 5-7 years in a few. Pretty incredible, on that front, but that is about it.

UI Stuff - Why would you?

 

Custom Themes - There's a light theme and a dark theme. I haven't heard a single Edge user complain about this!

 

Tab Stacking - I have no idea what stacked tabs are so I'm not gonna comment here. The only thing I've seen is that it doesn't look nice.

 

Dedicated search bar? - Bruh......

And while we're speaking of features that other browsers don't have, Edge is the only browser with  nice touch screen and pen support!
