I call them everyday, I have a youtube channel, where I make videos of calling them and having fun, but I don't think I can link my channel here cuz of self promoting

Yeah it's a scam, if anything I would set up a virtual machine for them to mess up and record the whole thing and post it on YouTube.

Poor thing, she really does try to stay on top of tech and is about 60% there most of the time..

She gave them her credit card number for the "anti-virus" before calling me..

It really is a shame this stuff still gets people. It's just deplorable and annoying, There's a reason I've told everyone close to me to call me if any tech related problem or event arises. I don't trust other people to not rip off my grandparents. I've worked at a computer store and it's just a simple fact that people that don't understand computers / aren't computer savvy are given a bad deal.

 

Some helpful advice:

If you are willing to be bothered about stuff in order to prevent anyone close to you from being scammed then just tell them that anytime that someone calls them or anything weird happens with the computer to call you for advice. Will prevent most problems.

Think about it, those Nigerians live off of $0.50 a day, so a $100 "score" and they are buying all their buddies a round of Nigerian hooch. Thats 3/4 of the year paid for.

Absolutely a scam.

1: Windows and Mac would never share a support line.

2: Neither Microsoft nor Apple cold-call people unsolicited.

3: Telling you to navigate to that IP is a bit shady.

 

As to how they got your number:

1: Data harvesting, companies that you've given your phone number to sharing your number around.

2: Cold calling. Basically when a computer goes through literally every phone number in existence, dialling and dialling and dialling, until by either by trial and error or blind luck they happen to dial an actual number when the call gets transferred to a scammer.

 

There isn't really much you can do about it. It freaks me out as well when I get unsolicited phone calls but my phone's antivirus allows me to block all incoming unknown calls, so that does a pretty good job. My advice would be to either:

1: Hang up immediately

2: Shout abuse down the line

3: Play along with the scam and waste a ton of their time. I'd do that last one but I don't have infinite time to spend on the phone with scammers :P

My grandfather paid some scammers triple digits USD once because of a simple ransomware. Super sad that scum like that exist in the PC world. Why would you want to harm PCs and Bank accounts for a quick buck or two?
