Top Tier 980ti vs Cheap 1070?

I got my Amp Omegas back when they were £350, and the Amp Extreme was £400. I found theres no difference between the two as the Omegas still clock to the Extreme's speed.

The only different between the Omegas and Extreme is the shroud and factory clock speed i think. Same PCB, same heatsink.

Stock speed don't mean anything unless u wanna run at stock clock where u stick ur card in and just play but who does that? oc capability is all luck anyway.

even at £360, it is still a lot cheaper than 1070 anyway, 20% off, same performance (for now). possibly higher resale value as well. The 780ti is selling on ebay for £160 last time i checked, and the 970 was roughly £120-150 mark.

No gpu is future proof guys.  If so then my 980 TIs would be VR optimized the same as a 1080.

 

Direct X 12 is a very poor reason to spend 100% more on a GPU.. how many of you are actually playing Direct X 12 titles now or plan to this year?  Next?  Not many.  The way Steam and Nvidia are pushing Vulcan it's a bit redundant for all but maybe 10% of Winows or Linux gamers.

Not the OP, but I had to deal with this choice a month ago too. I ended up getting a used 980 Ti for $120-150 cheaper than a new 1070 at the time (The 1070 prices were really high due to stock). I don't regret it at all, even if the 1070 is 10-15% faster, the 980 Ti was way cheaper. I do more content creation work though, I only really got the 980 Ti because my FirePro V7900 was turning to a powerpoint slideshow running a PS4 ported RPG game (14-20fps)...it was about equal to a GTX 560 or HD 5850. I now abusively run said game at 4KHD downscaled to 1080p and it's amazing. I feel bad for getting such a overkill card since I don't game much at all.

 

It does run hot though, but sadly cooler than my FirePro V7900 (Which idled at 65C and under load went to 86C at full fan speed).

 

I would wait for the 1070 pricing to stabilize a bit before buying one though (When they finally all are in stock...)

Regarding your issue:

Have you run any benchmarks or checked your power settings to make sure that isn't a factor for your high temps?  If you downloaded an OCing utility like precision X and hit "Kombuster" you'd be running those temps 24/7 for example.

 

Which 980 TI did you grab? My EVGA 980 TI (before I just recently upgraded) would idle around 15-40 (40 if I just closed a full screen app using 100% resources for example.  I'd suggest checking the above, your drivers, and then adjust your fan settings if you're still having trouble.

 

You might have a background service running or the xbox dvr recorder.. a bunch of silly Windows 10 features can cause high idle temps.   Stress test the card, benchmark it, and check manufactures website for specs as some cards run hotter than others.  

 

As far as your case being the issue....... I couldn't advise withuot more info.

I got a Gigabyte G1 Gaming, it looks like brand new. The temps on the 980 Ti are really good, especially after I changed the thermal paste. It's 30C at idle and 78C under full load. It's not the 980 Ti that has the high temps, it was the old FirePro that was.

 

Either way, the FirePro is retired to my tech shelf...I might pick up another 980 Ti for my NAS, but that's not really a priority yet.

If I were to buy now, I'd probably go for a 1070. It's slightly faster, consumes less power and is more recent technology. The 980 Ti is still a great card, though. I'm not sure it's up to the 4K TV I'm going to be throwing at it on Sunday, mind you...

A 1070 does use a lot less power, but is DX12 really a selling point for the GTX 10XX series? I have yet to see a single game where a GTX card does well in DX12 over DX11. And, from what I've seen in most games that feature both DX11 and DX12, GTX 10XX series cards typically lose significant performance in DX12 over DX11 mode.

 

If you are aware of games which show notable benefits from DX12 for GTX 10XX cards, I'm really interested to know what they are. I have a 1070.

That's a joke, right?  What TV are you worried about a 980 TI not being able to run?  Cus, it's fine for any 4k tv i have a 65 in

Of course it's not a joke. The 980 Ti is a great card, but it isn't so great for 4K gaming. If you want 60 fps, anyway.

How is it better at DX12? It is just Maxwell but smaller which helps clock speeds so Nvidia can sell it as an improvement.

Anyways, neither is a one card solution for native 4k gaming @ 60 FPS+.

 

When we say 60 fps + the next step up is typically 100, 120, 145, 165...

 

When you compare prices SLI 980 TI is perfect for 4k and easily obtainable for less cost than the soon to be outdated 1080

 

Anyways, 1080 TI drops in Jan 2017....... save money for black fri + cyber monday and get anything and everything for the low

I'm not sure which statement you're talking about, but nothing I've said in this thread is misleading. 

 

SLI is a solution I've rejected for getting 60 FPS on my new display. There are all the issues that come with SLI (scaling, stutter, game support) and the not-so-distant-future lack of VRAM (it's imbecilic that it still doesn't stack). By the time you've bought the extra 980 Ti you might as well have sold your current card and bought a 1080.

To end this discussion here is the sticky on the display forum from sometime ago.  It might be a bit out of date but the main points are still relevant.  Especially, why someone would use a monitor versus a 4k tv for gaming (especially 60+FPS!!!!).

 

Everyone has different needs but when it comes to the 980 TI versus the 1080 the 980 TI is the smart efficiant purchase (especially b-stock or other sales).

 

Check the 100's of benchmarks out there... 

 

There is not a solid arguement that I've seen for buying a 1080 anymore (over a 980 TI).

With the 1080 TI around the corner unless money is of no concern.

DX12.. if you're buying a card for DX12 I am assuing this person has never used DX12 (DX12 is Microsoft's software and only runs on Windows 10).  Vulcan will run on all 3 OS and Steam + NVIDIA are on the bandwagon (steam verus microsoft is another topic).

The 980TI is a great card and it will be a viable choice for a couple of years to come unless you plan on achieving 4K at 60fps with the latest titles or supersampling in Virtual Reality.

If you really want to educate yourself check out the guide I linked and skim to the tv and monitor section.  

 

TL:DR

 

TV's are desiged for movies, tv shows and such.  The refresh rate listed on the majority of TV's is not comparible to monitors due to different features manufactures and so forth.

 

Use the guide to educate.  There is a huge difference between a 4k TV and a 4k monitor (native).  On mobile check out the faq or blurbuster website.

 

  If you listed your TV's model # I could give more feedback.

Apart from all power consumption and such there's still that extra 2GB VRAM which might come in hand considering games are quite VRAM hogs as of now

1080's are from $650-$800 (don't quote me).  The 980 TI sales that happen constantly for new and b stock (1 year warranty) can get you 12 vram for less USD.

 

If I was looking to buy a new card (I am an EVGA fanboi so take this how you will).

 

I'd look at EVGA cards and their "Step up Program" for when the 1080 TI drops.   If the specs repeat similar to the 980 versus 980 TI many many consumers will feel disapointed after spending $700 (average).

sorry wasn't online for a while here, lol

 

980ti has served me very well, no current game run below 60fps(metal gear solid, witcher 3, crysis) this is at 1440p too, all fps games are above 100fps+ (overwatch, csgo, battlefield). those AAA games i dont need above 60fps anyway, it is not fast moving game. i think i made the right choice. even if future games come out, ill just lower some settings down a bit. better save that £80 for the next gpu.

Depends on your power supply. I asked the exact same question. Power efficiency on the 1070 is much better and the performance is slightly better. If that is worth the money is all up to you.

980ti has 2GB less VRAM than 1070.

The GTX 10xx cards can supposedly do better with DX12 because they use Asynchronous compute better than 9xx cards (as far as I know), but that doesn't seem to make a difference
