Have You Ever Been Hacked?

Bigun

I've been hacked... once.

I had an old forum I ran, that I eventually stopped running, never renewed the domain, but left the site running on the server.  A hacker group located the site and executed a script to give themselves a command line, and then ran a rootkit.

They then began to send out spam through my machine, so much so that it cold locked a switch that the server was connected to, that's how I initially found out I was hacked.

I used the opportunity to look behind the curtain and see how everything worked.  The group would own a machine, and then have the machine report to an IRC channel to report in and receive commands.  I logged into the IRC server, and saw thousands of machines ready to go.  I decided to have fun and say 'ello to the channel operator.  Needless to say, my IP got banned, and also the server I was running....  I was heartbroken.

I formatted the machine, and learned my lesson about outdated software.

Anyone else want to tell their story?

I was studying in Singapore. Using Gmail as my main email account.

I know that actually our school did give us an email account, but I do not want to log into school's website every single time if I wanna check whether my classmates send in the project files or not.

So.. One day on my back up account I received a warning email from Google. Saying that there was a sign in attempt (a successful one) on my email, however Google found out that the IP address was from somewhere in US. They did tell me which city/state, I could not remember. And at that point of time vpn service was not that popular, and clearly I was not using one. Matter of fact I did not even know what VPN is.

After I received that email I immediately changed my password to a more complex one. The original one is just my mom's phone number. At that point of time all those website did not even tell you to include a letter in your password. Just told you how long your password at least should be..

Edit: typo...

my 3 origin accounts were hacked, together with thousands of others :P

EDIT: should clarify why i had 3:

- my old account from the sims 2 exchange thing

- the account i got for the sims 3 exchange thing

- my actual origin account when they introduced origin to the world of sims.

then... they decided to turn them all into origin accounts, and then they all got put into a hack.

the last moment i cared about electronic arts is when the official statement was:

log in to help us recover your account

i should add that the hacker's approach was to change account password, change account name, and change the email it was tied to.

AKA, my accounts *disappeared* :P

I was playing with Linux, and chose Mint. I'm a kinda veteran noob at Linux, as I try it now and then but never keep at it, or get to any good level. I wanted to VNC into it so I tried to install VNC. This worked without password, and my attempts to set a password failed. I couldn't connect once set. I gave up for the day and left it. While I knew it wasn't secure, it was inside my router so unless they're in already, it'll be ok.

Later on, I went back to it, and thought it odd. There's a browser open. Looking at the history, someone had been shopping. As I'm the only person with access, so I thought, it was an intrusion. How did it happen? Wifi? Mains ethernet? Nope. Somehow when installing the software, UPnP opened the port to the outside world for me. Anyone with a port scanner could have found this unprotected VNC share. I only noticed this by chance when I was reviewing the router logs for any unrecognised connections.

So, does it count as a hack if I inadvertently left the door wide open? For all its faults, at least I know how to make Windows mostly do what I want.

They don't do refunds anymore do to the duplicate exploit where people in CS:GO would pretend they where scammed and stolen, then the items would be given to the original account but the scammers account keeps the items as well and they would duplicate the items and earn a SHIT TONE of money if the item is like a knife, somewhere around 7-10 M9 Bayone Crimson Web's in FW condition have been duplicated,so that's why valve quit refunding

Umm a couple of my old hotmail accounts got hacked.

And my origin account, didn't manage to get both hotmail accounts back but i did manage to get my origin account back.

I enabled 2FA after that on it.

Umm, i had a keylogger on my system, luckily i found out about it 2-3 weeks before they started trying to log in my accounts, but i changed all my passwords so i was 1 step ahead :P

And my current hotmail account used for crap is actually a funny thing.

I have 2FA on it, and the address itself got leaked many times so it's constantly getting spammed.

And when i check the login history it's completely full with failed login tries from all over the world :D

Thankfully 2FA does its job very well and after 2-3 years it's still mine :)

edit: in the last month i had 1 or more failed login attempts from these locations:

China, Russia, Ukrain, Turkey, Taiwan, USA, India, Vietnam, Brazil and a random country i never heard of.

Funny thing is it keeps the IP :D Oh well don't care tbh >_>

If you want my attention, quote meh! D: or just stick an @samcool55 in your post :3

No.

...not that I know of...

Either way I'm not very paranoid, if someone gets physical access to my hardware he can get in pretty easily. I just keep an eye on my things to make sure I don't lose them and nobody tinkers with them, and well, if nobody breaks into my house my desktops are safe enough.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

Had my gamertag hacked, and they bought $300 worth of seemingly random DLC and Arcade games. Situation was resolved, and due to a loophole I kept the rights to all the bought stuff, while getting the full refund.

Both my Yahoo and Skype were hacked in the same day, but all they did was turn it into a spam machine telling everybody in my contacts list how amazing it was to use this new form of Viagra, and trying to sell it to them alongside some shady-ass webcam site.

That last one was a little awkward to explain to certain people in my contacts, like my grandparents ._.

I won't know you're talking to me unless you reply/quote me.
