It depends on your budget and use case, for light gaming, AAA gaming, or productivity

Plus, it's better to list all of your current rig specs, since replacing either CPU or GPU could be limited by your PSU

For gaming, 8th gen is basically a minimum requirement, and if you wanna replace it, better the GPU first. Since if you're gonna replace the CPU, better along with the motherboard (which means also high investment that could be the same price for a new modern GPU)

GTX 1070 is a decent for eSport gaming, but struggle for modern gaming

I use it mainly for gaming, I play games like Overwatch, Fortnite, Dead by Daylight, ect.

I choose not to play fortnite on it because it runs awfully on the system.

I plan on playing the Silent Hill 2 remake but am unsure if it will run well as the minimum requirements state I need a 1070TI.

I also recently attempted to play minecraft with shaders but my frames were dropping from 100 to 0 every other second then the game would freeze and crash.

I also play some pc exclusive games such as, lethal company, content warning, ect.

It will run, just not very well. Requirements are more or less guestimates by the developer. I've played several games where my system was below minimum specs.

That said minimum specs still means it'll require turning down a lot of settings to get anything approaching playable framerates.

The games your mentioned shouldn't be too CPU intensive, so I'd look at a new GPU first.

A new CPU also requires a new motherboard (unless you go 9th gen, which wouldn't be worth it). And you'd also want to go with either faster RAM or better yet faster DDR5.

Remember to either quote or @mention others, so they are notified of your reply

That is an indication that the GPU just couldn't handle the graphical loads, I would suggest to turn down the setting to ease up your GPU

If you're on budget, a Radeon RX 6600 should be good enough to power up your rig without replacing the PSU (RX 6700 could be as well, but it's probably about almost maxing out your PSU)

And do you use hard drive to run your game and OS?

That would be the major bottleneck as well

yea i think its the cpu

should be able to just buy a used 3600(x) for ~50$ or 5600(x) for ~80$ and pair with a cheap ~60$ b450 board like the b450m-k/a, you can also get a used b3/450 tomahawk pro4 or equivalent for 50$ or less but if you dont wanna deal with bios updates or checking if the board is working normally new is a valid option for the board, new cpu is stupid though as cpus failiure rate is basically non existent

you can also reuse your current ram and run at 3000-3800 depending on the ram ic

In your case a cpu upgrade will give you a more stabe experience as especially in fortinite that i5 doesnt have enough threads and will hitch.

The 6600 is a little slower than the 1070ti on average so not good advice.

You could technically push this rig to a rx6800 before power becomes an issue.

Yup cpu issue check the usage its probably pinned at 100%

What your budget for an upgrade?

I used to think the same, then my 5950X died and the recent Intel issues.

I honestly wouldn't go lower than an X3D chip as its better at giving smoother frame rates, its going to be usable for longer IMO.

i guess the 5700x3d is pretty cheap nowadays

if you wanna go that route but you dont have the cash atm you can go for a used 3600(x) temporarily since theyre pretty cheap used

You can make fortnite run ok on that system. Just have to turn off texture streaming, ray tracing etc. Maybe run in DX11 and turn down settings a bit.

I actually had this even on the lowest settings the shaders offered, which I found odd because my old pc could run shaders (i7 4790 and rx 6400)

My os is ssd, but I may have minecraft installed on my hdd

When it comes to default minecraft I can handle its highest settings and a 64 chunk render distance, but can't handle a fraction even with the worst shaders

Well, I use a 6700k and a 1070 for AAA gaming, and it runs just fine(I may or may not have overclocked the cpu&gpu)

That could be the cause

Try to run the game directory from the SSD, if that does improve the gaming experience, you may not really in need of upgrade after all

The funny thing is, although RX 6400 is a modern budget GPU, it's relative performance is worse that GTX 1070 (7 years old GPU)

Minecraft is not a really demanding game, so if it stutters, there's a big chance something wrong
