what's your vision for future OS, will any other OS become main stream

I feel very sad, where things have come, Microsoft, google and probably all companies want, your information and I feel like MR. Robot will come a reality.

 

I wish some one build important software for linux, like video editing and animation.

Linux is good at server end and there are other software like open office and libra office which can really replace Microsoft office 360.

 

But yeah I think we are still going end up with linux, because everything will end up in cloud and there Linux rules.

 

I would love to see what you guys think and what vision you hold for the future of OS.

Games. I think that if we had no games Linux would be the mainstream OS.

no it would't linux should be way more user friendly to even have a chance

you can get legit windows licenses for like 20 bucks at /microsoftsoftwareswap and a few other places!

You misunderstand me.

If there were no games -> There would be less reason for most users to use Windows -> The more users you get on your OS the better support it has from other developers as well so if there were no games then Linux would have bigger user base and thus better support (at least in theory).

I got licence there and it is working however I am still skeptical about how much "legit" it is. I have no doubt the serial number I received is official but I wonder how long untill it stops working.

There is a compelling change coming that could disrupt the current OS market with X point. RAM like speeds with higher density that doesn't loose its contents could potentially change the model under which an operating system would run. It could cause a rush towards a different model for operating systems, and if doesn't then the use of the technology would be suboptimal.

 

Linux has been potentially breaking through to the desktop since it the 1990s, the reality is GUI drive the market and Linux doesn't actually have any good ones. It has them but they lack the complexity of Windows and Mac OS, it simply takes considerable resources and a common vision to get to what Apple and Microsoft have done. I can't foresee a change for a long time and we will see it coming due to the sheer size of a modern OS.

If Vulkan became mainstream windows would die in a heartbeat. All your AAA games and others run perfectly on linux. Why would we ever need windows

Well with seeing it implemented in doom and giving cards a 30FPS boost. That is some serious numbers. It does require more work for the devs as the whole idea is to utilize the system better which takes more time. But that means you can be lazier in the other spots and still achieve the same results

I kind of agree.  The issue is Microsoft holds the market share.  Sure, Apple is the strongest competitor with Mac OS, but it's only like 20-30% of the market.  

As for video editing and all that on Linux, it exists, just that better applications exist on Mac OS and Windows.  Honestly, what you would need is multiple things.

Apple is going to have to go back to targeting the consumer audience with competitively priced laptops.  (as the Mac Mini is already competitively priced.)  This would get more people going to Apple.  Then, someone would need to make a Linux OS that is very user friendly, somewhere between Mac OS and Windows.  This would (potentially) get people to move to these OSes, and (potentially) give developers incentive to actually develop software, both games and productivity.  

We just need those things IMO.

Currently focusing on my video game collection.

It doesn't matter what you play games on, just play good games you enjoy.

The day Linux ditch the terminal entirely and everything can be accessed in an intuitive way, quickly and easily using a mouse, is the day Linux becomes mainstream. Meaning never. So there's no future there.

I'm hoping reactOS becomes mainstream,  but it still needs a LOT of development before it can even remotely be considered a viable option

Apple please don't nerf the specs of your Macs anymore. 

I still think if they give Mac mini a boost, (user up-gradable RAM, powerful i7, standard SSD config ), it will sell like crazy.

For me I just cannot stand using MacOS on a 5400 rpm HDD...

As soon as an alternative OS gets support for windows games, I'll bet at least 70% of gamers would switch instanly. I am shocked at how inefficient windows is at everything.

Search should not be separate from the windows button.
Also, rainmeter shouldn't have to be another program, it should be a feature.

I think eventually we'll get to a point where Linux starts making a dent into the Windows market share but we're still a few years away from that. I wouldn't rule it out as a possibility but as it is, the titan still stands fairly unchallenged by the other competitor due to how they handle their software.

And, the average person may not know what reddit is, nevermind how to find that subreddit and buy it for $20. If my grandma wanted to buy a copy, she'd go to microsofts site and buy it. She knows how. She wouldnt know how to find reddit and even if she did she wouldnt trust it

It's why I left.  Trust me, the laptop specs in my sig wouldn't be reading for a Dell 7559, but a MacBook Pro if they allowed me to upgrade my stuff.
