AMD Zen to arrive in limited stock in Q4 2016, full stock in Q1 2017

So as you know, AMD Zen should be there soon, but in limited quantites. This was confirmed.

 

AMD CEO, Lisa Su, confirmed that Zen will arrive in 2016 but in limited quantities. If you can wait, in early 2017 full quantities will arrive.

 

 “We have been very focused on the server launch for first half of 2017. Desktop should launch before that. In terms of true volume ability, I believe it will be in the first quarter of 2017. We may ship some limited volume towards the end of the fourth quarter, based on how bring up goes and the customer readiness,” said Lisa Su, AMD’s CEO.“But again, if I look overall at what we're trying to do, I think the desktop product is very well positioned for that high end desktop segment, that enthusiast segment in both channel and OEM, which is very much a segment that AMD knows well and so that's where we would focus on desktop. You should expect a notebook version of Zen, with integrated graphics in 2017, and that development is going on as well. And so, I think it's just a time of a lot of activity around the Zen and the different Zen product families,” said Su.

 

I'm personally pretty excited.

I just hope both the mobo and 8-core zen chips aren't too expensive at Q4 2016. I really wanna try out zen for myself

I'm still pleased with my i5 3450's performance so I'll probably be fine for the time it takes them to get sufficient stock and prices to stabilize.

Too bad they might miss some of the sweet Q4 sales volume, but this is otherwise about as expected.

Heh, same processor here. Not even sure I'll be upgrading yet, taking the wait and see approach. Helps that mine is overclocked - runs VR pretty well.

I think they should do away with the FX naming sheme. It's a vastly different arc. But yeah I'm actually pretty excited. It will bring some needed competition back if all goes well, especially important for the high end market.

Expected exactly this, limited by end of the year and full stock in start of the new year.

On paper new chips are looking to be great, and they're build from the ground up. Launch will be indeed interesting, can't wait to see launch of new platform.

Also, it will be nice to see AMD in notebooks too with their new CPU/GPU products.

Limited stock? Dammit, that usually means jacked up prices with some obscure oems that we never get here will get it first and here I was hoping to have new Vega+Zen system on Christmas

I was really looking forward to saving my money and going all out when zen came out but due to school needs I bought a 4790k last December so I think i'll just watch this one out and wait for the next architecture.

Well... this is it. Make or break for AMD. This will be the difference between a flourishing and newly awakened company or one that is on the verge of complete collapse.

They've probably got larger profit margins than Time Warner Cable

Can't wait to see what nice ITX mobo companies gonna come up with for Zen! The only neutral colored z170 out there right now is the Gigabyte Z170-wifi. No much choices -.-.

think it all depends now on what kind of clockspeeds they can hit.

 

official and leaked reports all seem to indicate that Zen ipc and power efficiency is good enough (although in what workload is not mentioned).

 

so if the ipc is good enough now it depends on how high they can ramp up the clock speeds in the remaining months, that will determine if absolute performance is gonna be somewhat competitive with intel or merely an upgrade over vishera.

Quite simply because I've already got 2 less than 12 month old Skylake builds, one is my gaming machine and the other I use as a fileserver/NAS/SMB machine.

 

I don't see my self needing to buy another machine for many years.

Not to mention the reputation of FX chips. Much better to come up with a new brand that doesn't have 4 years of disappointment attached to it.
