PSU Tier List [OLD]

Go to solution Solved by Spotty,

This is a legacy list. It is no longer being updated.

The new PSU Tier List can be found here:

Tell me a reason why I should change to tier 1.

Since you're asking that way and marking other people's Post as funny, you don't seem to want to replace the PSU and believe its a good PSU.

So you don't really come to this discussion with an open mind and I have to ask you what you really want to hear?! That its fine to use an old, group regulated unit that might, or might not, be broken??

Here you can see what might happen:

https://www.computerbase.de/2017-07/cooler-master-cougar-xfx-zalman-netzteil-test/3/#abschnitt_spannungsregulation

Voltage out of spec that damages your components, +5V and +12V dependant on each other, so that everything that happens on one rail, happens on the oher kinda as well.

hi everyone, is cm mwe 450 is ok to power an old i7 sandybridge + gtx960 ? for light gaming and office mostly. Mwe 450 is quite cheap in local store near me, im not sure about its durability though..

No.

If you're in Europe, the be quiet System Power (400W and up) is a way better option, if the U9 is available that should also be OK.

Minimum requirement for a PSU is independant voltage regulation for all rails...

Nah quite the opposite. It is because I will throw my PSU out of the window soon anyway.
I just upgraded to ryzen two days ago and was in a process of thinking if I should upgrade my GPU or PSU first.
Of course I will upgrade my PSU first after all these comments.

(psst I use GTX 460)

I would recommend changing it. It's a low-quality unit.

No, used PSU are NEVER a good choice because you loose the warranty with most manufacturers like Corsair and some offer a greatly reduced warranty of up to 3 Years for the second buyer.

As for the Price: A _NEW_ Pure Power 10/500W is only ~5€ more than the MEW 450.

The 400W is actually cheaper with ~46€.

The MWE450 is listed for 51€ here right now...

So you don't even save money!

As the Pure Power 10/600W is only ~17€ more when getting new. The CM is ~24€ more...

So I went with a Corsair RMx unit after shopping around, but of course the next day a Cooler Master V series PSU goes on sale. How do the two compare regarding performance / long-term safety? I imagine the RMx is a tad better, but by how much?

Sorry for all the questions!

I'll be happy to finish up my build regardless, but there is a $40 difference between the two. I'm looking to keep the PSU around for hopefully 7-8 years or so, so as long as the CM is safe and well-enough made I'm happy to go through the hassle of returning the already-bought PSU.

It's decent. Though, you should be able to get the Formula Gold 450W for about the same price.

Though I have to say that I'd only recommend 400 and 500W Versions, 600W and up don't seem to make too much sense to me....

Seasonic S12II 620W and below is an entry level unit, comparable to Cooler Master Master Watt Lite or Corsair VS. With a bit of Lipstick put on it (Wapanese capacitors). but those are actually BETTER than the S12II or M12II.

As they actually have working protection, the Seasonic does not.

Here more Infos:

Getting a new computer is more expensive than getting a good PSU.

Something to think about.

PSU to PC is similar to Oil in Cars.

Good oil prolongs the life of the motor, crappy or old oil damages (or rather increases wear and tear).

Its the same with PC Components...

What about the 450W versions? The 1070 Ti is a 175W card, so that's like 250W total system power consumption under load. You don't need a ≥500W PSU for that.

I'm looking for people to help with the new Tier List, and the reorganizing. It'll be MUCH faster if there's a few people working on it at once.

The Pure Power 10 should be fine. The Focus Plus is considered higher end than the others, so it's probably the best value among the $100 ones.

TDP is not the same as power draw, just want to make that distinction. NVIDIA recommends a 500W PSU, which means you'd probably be ok with a 450, depending on your CPU and if you're overclocking or not.

The TDP is the limit of how much heat the card produces at stock. All of that heat comes from the power draw, and there is nothing else to draw a significant amount of power. Meaning power draw for Pascal = TDP. Which is confirmed by reviewers.

Noone gives a damn about Nvidia's PSU recommendation, as it's a worst case scenario, with a garbage PSU.
