Although a 700W SFX PSU is kinda useless, I'd still like to have it.

SFX market segment looks kinda bleak...

Because most have that Semi-Fanless bullshit and some even without a Timer or other kind of hysteresis.

Yeah, Semi Fanless is awesome when the Fan Constantly starts/stops - with a step of like 2-5s on, 2-5s off...

And thenn a "brrr - hui" sound...

Right now I'd say that all CWT made SFX PSU should be avoided because of this garbage Semi Fanless implementation, that only does one thing: Kill the Fan...

That's a shame because otherwise the PSU is fine...

But the fan controller totally kills it...

Enough rambling: I kinda like InWin, sadly they don't like to send out Samples...

Doesn't Silverstone make a couple of higher wattage (for SFX) units that are always-on-fan?

Also I'm not clear what it is with your hatred of semifanless.

Not sure about it.

Last I knew was that they did have a Semi Fanless Mode. Maybe I could convince them to go full on fan, I don't know.

It causes more Problems than it solves.

And read my last posting. I have a good example of one of the Problems of Semi Fanless.

Another Problem is that it heats up the PSU thus:

a) heats up the HDD above the PSU

b) reduces the lifetime without a need to.

The thing is that sometimes a good quality fan is more expensive than a Semi Fanless implementation...

And that's also what some Industry Affiliate said: We don't need no good quality fan, we have Semi Fanless.

...and a couple of years they started using good quality fans, even though they still use Semi Fanless...

I thought that was odd too, lol. Usually drives and PSU are not in the same are of most cases.

You can have a practically silent PSU that still has a fan running inside it. ;)

And a lot of semi fanless power supply have a high OTP setting. If that temperature is repetitively hit, I can’t imagine it good for the PSUs lifespan.

I have used ECO mode on my EVGA G2 850Watts for 3 years now, and I have no problem with it at all.

Silverstone RVZ-01 -> https://www.silverstonetek.com/raven/products/index.php?model=RVZ01

Has a 3,5" HDD directly above the PSU

And I like my PSU quiet too...

And quiet doesn't necessarily imply having Semi Fanless. That's just the easy way out.

Well, you have to get a PSU with a good fan like Straight Power E11 to see that there are really good and quiet units on the market...

Yeah, for normal Tower Cases.

But Small Form Factor or Desktop Cases in general, things can be different.

Yeah, and some aren't even expensive. For example Xilence Performance X. My 750W unit goes down to 350rpm and has also a fan with low motor/bearing noise. Though only a normal Sleeve Bearing fan.

There are other Options as well.

Lower Wattage Bitfenix FOrmula/Whisper M have OKish Fan noise (slight Motor/Bearing noise), kinda mediocre, good are most be quiet units.

But there are also some bad ones. I was really shocked about the Hong Hua in my CWT GPS-750 model. God was that fan awful. You hear it 15m away - although it only rotates at around 350rpm as well because of the high motor noise...

BUT: As you know, you can get a fan for like 2€ but also 20€. And there is a reason for that.

Because making good mechanical stuff is expensive as hell and thus good fans are in the 20€ range (be quiet Silent Wings, the ugly Noctuas).

The fan noise thing seems to be a hard thing to describe as everyone has different ears. Mine for example are odd in that i have always been able to hear hi pitched noises others cant so for example if a security board at my office takes a lighting charge I can hear that its broken when no one else can. On the flip-side when i was young I was stupid and ran riding lawnmowers with no ear protection so my general volume threshold is very poor my tv is probably at twice the volume an average person.  So for me I cant hear almost any fan noise in general but any fan that makes a more high pitched noise I cannot stand. WIth PSU's I dont think I have ever heard a fan noise however this tends to be true of case fans as well. Small 80mm server fans I can hear and hurt my ears when they go full blast on boot. I had to remove the 3000RPM noctua fans I tried in my case because even at 800 rpm it was horrible for me but the 1500 RPM maxed redux noctua fans i could not hear at all.  That all being said i personally have never heard a PSU fan. I also typically use a headset so i cant hear my pc at all.

Sorry that was slightly tangent I had a different question. Lets assume I do not really care about anything but failure rate and longevity, or rather i care about that much more than anything else what would be the best PSU? Im currently buying some parts for another pc build  I dont care about efficiency or price or features i just want the highest possible chance of putting it in a pc and never in 10+ years having to open up and replace it again would i just be looking for ones with the more expensive internals? IE should i be looking at reviews of units and just looking for name brand capacitors and someone going yep thats a good solder? I know seasonic has a warranty that last ages but assuming I dont care about even that because im lazy and don't ever want to open and rewire things again.  Am I just as likely to have a failure in a ~100$ unit as a ~200$ unit or do the internals actually matter in that regard?  I guess basically im asking does the extra 100$ you can spend on a titanium rated psu matter at all for longevity or just efficiency?  IE would you expect a seasonic prime to last longer or have less chance to fail than a focus? For instance i notice on new egg the prime series is rated for 50% more hours than a focus but there is 0 difference between a gold and a titanium prime unit as far as manufacturer expected life in hours.  Why is that?   Side question should i care about the things people review like ripple etc when any units im likely to buy will likely be very good?  Does this matter any less if i know im going to be plugging my unit in through a  battery backup surge protecting UPS? Could these things actually effect my max stable OCs? I dont mind spending 200$ but i don't see myself spending 400$ and getting 3x the number of watts i need. Also any links to resources where i can read up on this would be great as im a nerd and just like learning about these things in general.

Thanks for any insight

In theory the FSP Twins, but it will annoy you to hell with it's fans as they run insanely fast. On a more serious note, a PRIME/RM(x/i)/H(x/xi)or AXi would work just fine...

I was able to trigger OTP on my Silverstone Strider 750W Platinum.

Though I kinda provoked it (was on the side, high wattage testing with Heaven + Prime and pulled th plug, put it back in and then it tripped).

And there is also:
https://www.hardocp.com/article/2013/11/13/corsair_rm750_750w_power_supply_review/4

And with my new CWT SFX PSU the fan starts/stops literally from a second to the next (maybe 5) - its really that bad. And causes a brrr - phui (a slight motor humming followed with a slight hiss)

A sample size of 1 is irrelevant.

I know someone who had IIRC two similar Super FLower Leadex fail on him.

But does that matter? no.

The thing is that there are issues with Semi Fanless that make it expensive, so that you might want other things instead. For example more Drive Connectors, better quality fan, Multi Rail...

a) what do you want with 600W+??
If you do not have much money, get a better quality one instead of a high wattage one. You do NOT need 600W+ for your setup. And since you're not having much money, it doesn't make it better.

So the best option are those:

https://www.forit.ro/surse/xilence/161295-performance-a-plus-xp530r8-530w/

https://www.forit.ro/surse/xilence/191388-performance-x-xp550r9-80-plus-gold-550w/

better:

https://www.forit.ro/surse/be-quiet/183125-system-power-9-80-plus-bronze-500w/

https://www.forit.ro/surse/be-quiet/161242-pure-power-10-80-plus-silver-500w/

best:

https://www.forit.ro/surse/be-quiet/179103-straight-power-11-550w-80-plus-gold-550w/

I have a Radeon R9-280X myself (or rather two).

And it consumes not that much...

So out of those, the best option is probably the Xilence Performance X, 550W, after that the be quiet Pure Power and the System Power 9 (NOT 8, stay away from 8!)

56 minutes ago, LienusLateTips said:

No, the Xilence Performance A+ is better as its DC-DC.

But there are way better options in that store -> System Power 9.

Other Options:
Chieftec Power Smart 550W though the fan is kinda shit...

I have a Radeon R9-280X myself (or rather two).

And it consumes not that much...

So out of those, the best option is probably the Xilence Performance X, 550W, after that the be quiet Pure Power and the System Power 9 (NOT 8, stay away from 8!)

No, the Xilence Performance A+ is better as its DC-DC.

But there are way better options in that store -> System Power 9.

Other Options:
Chieftec Power Smart 550W though the fan is kinda shit...

Hello, thank you for posting ,i think i will buy  Xilence Performance A+ XP530R8, 530W or  be quiet! System Power 9, 80+ Bronze, 500W -these are the power suplies that fit with my budget . I forgot to add  in my list Corsair Builder Series CX500  // Corsair NEW VS Series VS550 - Certified Refurbished // Sirtec - High Power 550BR-V12S, 80+ Bronze, 550W // Seasonic S12II-520 Bronze 520W.

I got a question. It will be enough 500 W ? Because with my power supply my pc didn't start. I tried also with another cheap power supply - i connected my motherboard and hdd with the cheap one and i use antec just for video card .The computer start but got black screen on monitor and the coolers on the video card didn't start. What's wrong with my power supply ? Last year ran fine with a r9 380 . srs.png.01f39edc65c0db332350efff5980c236.png

Great that's the best choice you have right now...

Though I highly recommend the System Power 9 over the Xilence.

Those all don't really matter and aren't any better than the rest - or worse (like the S12II-Bronze from 2010).

I don't know the High Power but it doesn't look like that might be a good choice.

I've used an I7-3930K with an RX480 OC (Power Color Red Devil) with a 400W PSU.
500W will be fine.

Either because of incompatibility or because the PSU died.

Urgh, that's not a good idea and it might have damaged stuff.

Using 2 PSU is only something you'd do with better PSU than you have right now.

The Reason it might not work no more might be because the PSU just died as its almost 10 years old...

PSU don't get better with age...

Xilence isn't readily available in North America

Formula can go fuck itself

Whisper M is hard to find in North America, and in the rare cases it is it's overpriced AF

Rn it's not great, but it's often a fairly decent deal. Just keep an eye on https://pcpartpicker.com/products/power-supply/#e=4&sort=price&page=1

Spoiler

To reiterate

1 : It's not worth the money given the pricing of the TXM, FOCUS Gold, and sale/refurb G2/RMx/GtHrEeEeEeEeEeEeE/whatever

2 : Cable management with non-modular PSUs can be a pain especially in smaller cases; even 1 extra cable can cause problems in a small uATX case, etc.

3 : The Formula has some weird PFC stuff IIRC

$80 for a multirail modular 550W? With the TX550M at $44 and the RM550x a few bucks more I'll pass thanks. Also, it doesn't seem to have been much cheaper in the past year (at least the 550w)
