PSU Tier List [OLD]

Go to solution Solved by Spotty,

This is a legacy list. It is no longer being updated.

The new PSU Tier List can be found here:

Where would you put the EVGA G1 then?

It's group regulated, even though it's gold.

So T4 or T5.

Stefan mentioned moving all group-regulated units down to T5 but I still feel that's quite harsh. I can understand not wanting non-Haswell compatible PSUs in the third tier since we kind of use that as a benchmark for "start here" a lot of the time, but bumping it down to XFX XT and Antec Basiq-level seems wrong.

The Problem with group regulated units is that they can or will be out of spec.

Someone with a FSP Aurum I based unit mentioned that the voltage in his system drops down to the mid-low 11V range wich isn't what you would desire.

And that's the problem with those units...

You can tweak it a bit, but that only goes so far...

And that's the problem with those unit that you can force them to go out of spec - you can't do that with independently regulated units...

That's why my old CM GX650 killed 2 GPUs on me a few years back. Really crappy group reg unit which actually failed cross-load tests in Jonny Guru's review. Which I learned after the fact. :/

Some are "OK" but I would never trust a group reg unit for my own personal gaming rig, nor would I ever recommend one for someone else. Yes, I just bought one (CM Silent pro 1000M) but it was only $25 and will be for a budget mining rig, so I don't really care. lol.

All these discussion makes me a bit wary of my S12ii 430B,

my system isn't that demanding but are there better alternatives if I ever want to replace my psu?

I mean, you're realistically fine to keep your PSU but when you get a new GPU or CPU it wouldn't be a bad idea.

I see, thanks for the reply.

I'm probably waiting for Zen2 before upgrading so I have a lot of time to save some money.

Have you read the last couple of pages??

S12II is shit these days, poorly protected, group regulated, Wapanese capacitors don't make this unit any better than Corsair VS, CM Masterwatt Lite, Thermaltake Germany series, EVGA B-Series (made by HEC).

There is no reason to buy it.

I relly don't understand why people think the S12II is better than those "System Integrator level" ones.

For your 1700 I would not get a PSU that old. The S12 is for older systems and performs and is built as such. Get a Corsair CX550.

SeaSonic name? Maybe it has good build quality (I didn't check :D)? Or maybe something else.

Yeah and it's short for Wannabe Japanese.

And I think it fits this discussion because the "japanese" capacitors we are so obsessed with in PSU are also made in China as everything else in the PSU...

And also forgetting that companys like Teapo, ltec, CapXon and co have a wider variety of products than most japanese companys have...

And if we are talking about Teapo/CapXon/ltec and co we are usually talking about the buttom of the line of their products. Like Teapo SC, wich are specified for up to 3000h in their standard variants but only 2000h for 'downsized'.

The worst Japanese Low ESR are somewhat uppar range for the Taiwanese/Chinese manufacturers. And have a rated lifetime of 4000h or more,...
