Bad Grammar = Turns me off

coldghost67

Hey All,

I just wanted to point out something. On the recent follow up video to the low end GPU rant, I was intrigued by the advertisement for the SSD with SATA and USB 3.1 on it. So, I went down to the description, and clicked on the link, and hey, manufacturer website. But wow! The entire product description was filled with grammar mistakes, formatting errors, and the like. See below for copied and pasted, uncorrected excerpt:   (from: http://ap.apacer.com/products/Solid-State-Drive-Panther-AS720)

"The high speed AS720 allows editing directly off it without time wasting file copying. Itdeliversthe smoothestand more convenient high-speed transmission experience. Windows-To-Go function, compact size, anti-collision and anti-shockprotection, all leadsmobile storage solutions forward to the new field for high efficiency and ultimate speed. The moment you use AS720, you know you have never felt anything like it. "

And I immediately closed the tab and continued to watch YouTube. For me, nothing puts me off more than a company who can't even put spaces in between their words and proofread their public product page. How about you guys? Will this influence your potential purchase?

Absolutely.  Especially if it's a company I don't know well or isn't popular, this would seriously make me think they're some sketchy scam site.  Clearly, something like the paragraph you posted above is not just one typo.

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

It depends: How badly do I need a product that does that thing? Is this indeed the best product to meet my needs within my constraints?

If the answers are "alot" and "yes" then it probably won't affect my purchase at all. If whatever I'm looking at is an impulse buy, then it will definitely affect my purchase.

I thought this was a different kind of topic...

If I'm choosing between vendors, trying some new thing that came into the market, buying something out of impulse, or gifting something. Yes, grammar mistakes can make me not purchase a product.

However if I'm really in need of the product, and I can't find a replacement/alternative for it, then I might buy it (despite the grammar mistakes).

I tend to be lenient with things like this. If their product is great value for my dollar, this is a non issue for me.

Not related with the topic, mostly related with the title.

If someone doesn't use "bad grammar" when speaking to you, will it turn you on? ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

I don't even like it when poor grammar is on this forum.  (or any forum for that matter)

I just feel like it is a very hard thing to do, spend my own personal unpaid time here, trying to help people, and then the question that they're asking is difficult to even read.  Sometimes there are questions in the form of statements, statements in the form of questions, and generally just statements that leave me with a "And your point is?" kinda statement.

Now I know I'm not perfect, but I do try my damnedest to ensure that my comments are readable so everyone is capable of contributing to the conversation.

Please spend as much time writing your question, as you want me to spend responding to it.  Take some time, and explain your issue, please!

Well, they are not from country that has english as main language. And professional translation costs moneys. Big moneys for new and upcoming company. So rather than pay for professional to check it, they rely on quality and customer service (I hope) or just cheap price and high capacity.

What I dislike is you pasting content and not removing formatting. Kills my eyes on Night theme. For many things I prefer english over bad localizations. Sadly, Google doesn't allow option to select different language for Play Store and interface of all other software. The Play Store auto-translation is just horrible grammar when translated from English to Finnish.

Still though, this is their promotional page. Something that many of the people who will buy their product will read. If they don't put enough effort into that to make it proper English, just think about how their manual or support line is.

Also, some of these are not issues about how their first language is not English: "Itdeliversthe smoothestand" and "leadsmobile" for example show me no one has proof read this. Even someone with the lowest English ability would say "yo you are missing some spaces there..". This is I think the worst: "anti-shockprotection" anti.. shock.. protection.. So it's the opposite of 'shockprotection', meaning... It doesn't have any shock protection.. That's terrible.

I could go on, but what I am saying is that:

1. this product page might be indicative of how their manual and support might be

2. they did NOT proof read AT ALL

3. they are using double negative to mean the opposite of what they want to say

If the product page is rushed, why wouldn't the product in question also be rushed?

I am from Norway, I do my best to use proper grammar as I myself take people more seriously when they type the words out, remember to hit the space bar and use proper grammar. I do however try to be a little lenient when its obvious that someone don't have English as their mother tongue. Having that said, for a company to do this seems even more unprofessional than your average Joe. Would it make me think twice about buying a product from them, absolutely. And Apacer isn't small, it has a total of 6 worldwide offices, one of the office's is located in the US and they could have easily taken care of a few product pages to make sure its not riddled with typing mistakes or bad grammar.

But there is one thing that annoys me more though, and that is when people that have English as their day to day language can't use proper grammar, I mean, if you do live in the US or the UK for that matter, whats stops you from writing out your words? Or what stops you from proof reading what you type before you hit submit? "u r stupid" Like seriously... it doesn't take any longer to write "You are stupid" How hard can it be? When I post something here on the forum, if I use a word that I'm not sure how its written or even what it means, you can bet your last dollar that I will search the word up in a dictionary, it takes me a few sec longer at best, if you are so rushed you can't spare a few seconds you really need to calm the heck down and smell the flowers or something.

I once explained to my girlfriend what true love is. I said, "If you were a shit, I'd put you back in" and to this day, she is still my little shit.

I agree completely. I know my grammar may not be perfect in every way, but when a big company's product information has more grammatical mistakes than my third grade English work, I politely close the tab and put the company on my mental do-not-buy list.
