Right to Repair bill running out of time

A year ago a new bill was introduced called the Fair Repair Act, which basically would have forced manufacturers to give out when required schematics, guides and parts to repair their electronic devices (basically what every manufacturer used to do backed in the ol' days) either it's the user doing the repair himself or repair shops doing it for them. Ever since last year though nothing has happened and that bill is running out of time:

Wiens is still optimistic about the bill's chances, but there are a lot of hurdles to be cleared in the weeks to come. The bill is currently in committee, and will need to clear that committee, pass in both the state assembly and senate, and be signed by the governor before it becomes law. The bill has been largely well received by the legislature, with sponsors from both parties. Governor Cuomo has yet to express any position on it.

What do you guys think: should repairing be an habit that should just die, and what's broken should just gets tossed away without thinking twice and people should just stop being so cheap and just buy a new one or should you be able to have a schematic of your device, telling what every single component does allowing you to easily troubleshoot it and also get said parts directly from the manufacturer instead of just going to third party component distributors?

If I buy a device then I should be able to repair it myself. If it turns out I am not good enough to repair it and I irreparably break the device then that is my fault.

I don't think that will ever happen but I can already see a cycle staring. Since CPUs have gotten so good in the past years unless you are running a top of the line small server of supercomputer you don't upgrade every generation. The 2500K is still a good CPU and most people have one or had one. We have gotten so well at making things last long and perform well people see no use to upgrade so there are these gaps. The gaps will get larger in the years and pretty soon we will hit a pattern of say every 10 years or every 5 years everyone at once upgrades. MARK MY WORDS

Politicians might not like these sorts of bills. It's something not too many know or care about and new devices generate more taxes than repairing does. On the other hand with repairing you might be supporting local businesses (provided you have people who can repair locally) instead of a corporation that may or may not have a presence in your state (though, they typically like to have a presence in important states so they have political sway). I think a smaller state will have to push this forward since they have less to lose and more to gain.

This doesn't prevent you from repairing your stuff if you want to, all it does is mandate schematic availability if it were to pass, nothing happens if it doesn't pass.

Many cars already don't include service manuals, so that you go at the dealership to get your car fixed or do its maintenance, a potential issue if you need to service a new car of 1-2 years. Heck, some cars no longer list car maintenance cycles in the owner manual. If you are not knowledgeable, you don't know when you should service your car for oil changes based on the oil that was put on your car, or other car fluids. My manual simply says to do regular checkups at your dealership... riiigt... at 160$ per hour service, I'll definitely do this. /s

Sensationalized headline. This has nothing to do with the right to repair your device. This has to do with the right to demand schematics and other information from the manufacturer, to aid the process of repairing your device.

 

Without the bill, you're still absolutely free to attempt to repair your device. It's just much more difficult to figure out what you need to do to fix a given problem.

 

In addition, this is just for a single state in the US. Not relevant for most Americans, let alone those of us outside the US.

 

That said, I definitely support initiatives like this. Maaaybe manufacturers could get a concession on not giving out info that would be sensitive for competition or security reasons, but I like the basic concept of requiring them to release information to facilitate repairs.

the tittle wasn't that click baity imo, this bill will force manufacturers to provide schematics and documentation to their device, without it they can simply say no and not provide it to you which at that point considering how complex electronics are this days will be impossible to fix (unless you decide to look at the board and redraw it yourself step by step, making your own consideration about what component does what). 

Just for an example, not trying to start a flame war or anything, it's just an example, so chill out: let's look at Apple, Apple is one of those companies that simply hate third repairs shop, making they're job almost impossible when it come to repair Apple's products since they don't want to provide schematics, they don't want to provide guides, now they have stop you from installing third party screens or home buttons, and it's not like they're going to provide them with their own OEM screen or home buttons; with this bill at least, one hopes, things will be much easier for those shops since after that Apple won't be able to deny access to those schematics, Apple won't be able to deny access to their first party components etc etc etc.

 

So yeah imo if this bill doesn't pass it truly will be the end of self-repairs

As we cram more and more stuff into devices, and what was once separate components are now integrated into the device's 'mother board', stuff is getting less and less repairable, even with repair schematics. Making stuff repairable generally means making it bigger, and the market trend is towards getting ever smaller, or at least thinner.

 

As phones move towards being our means of payment, how much should they be open to third parties? I don't like having a phone that can't be economically repaired because the manufacturer charges ridiculous rates, but I'd like having my bank account emptied by a criminal who gets his hands on my phone, even less.

That's a risk that you take when going into a repair shop independent of Apple. That said, the likelihood of finding quality shops will increase with this bill. Same goes for any garage when you service your car.
