The NEW Top Gear is terrible, hope The Grand Tour delivers thread

Master Disaster

New Top Gear starts tomorrow (Sunday 29th) night, 8pm on BBC2 and I know old Top Gear had a pretty big following on the old forum which is why I decided to create a centralised thread where everyone can come and discuss it.

Personally I don't have huge expectations for ntg however I am willing to give it some fair shot so,  unless it's truly dreadful, I am going to watch Season 1 in its entirety.

I love Chris Evans, Sabine Schmitz is also a good choice however I am reticent of Matt Le Blanc.

Come one TG fans, get subbed and get posting!

I loved old TG, but I'm not hopeful for the reboot. I loathe Chris Evans with a burning passion, dislike Le Blanc and I'm indifferent toward Schmitz.

Ooh, shows you how much attention I paid as I didn't know it was on! I'm in the "give them a chance" camp. Personally I think there's too many presenters in the time given, so I'm not sure it'll connect together like the old crew. The interpersonal bickering was as much a part of the old show as any car on it.

Personally I think it would be better to keep threads separate since they're different things.

I was a big time Top Gear fan, watched episode after episode and went to top gear live

Just watched the new episode and it might be the last I'll ever watch... Matts voice is so fucking drowsy and boring and so was the whole show really. They ruined the test track and its called a star in a reasonably priced car not not star in a rally car, the show just dragged  on and on it was like drowning in shit.

I give this show two seasons before it goes off air

Thoughts all?

I'm a little unsure, Chris was trying to be JC, Matt is boring and the format didn't quite fit the presentation. I can't pinpoint what exactly yet but something is wrong with it.

Gonna watch Season 1 and see if it grows on me.

Shaky start picking up towards the end. Is it me or is Chris' voice more irritating than I remember it? Guy at work has said there was a trend for people to shout rather than speak. While understandable in a noisy car, the studio parts sounded awful. On that note there was a ton of echo and what sounded like dynamic compression in the applause which were annoying.

Content wise... I'm not feeling the hate between Matt and Chris. On that note, Chris is a bit like a "JC lite". I thought he'd be more himself, but then again I have no idea what he is like elsewhere. Apart from the segment with Sabine, weren't there supposed to be a ton of other presenters also? Or are they just going to be rotated in randomly?

So for now, I'm not sold on them keeping the formula. I think they needed to do something more radical and take it into a new direction, which hasn't happened.

Honestly, it wasn't too bad, it was a bit nervy as they were just getting into it. I reckon after a few episodes it'll get a lot better, although I do think extra gear on BBC 3 will be better, because it's Monkey Harris doing it, and he really knows his stuff.

Harris and Rory Reid are hosts on Extra Gear. And I suppose Sabine and Eddie Jordan will just be doing random segments from time to time.

It must be awful having to do hot labs on the tarmac, while the track is also being used for offroad. Unless the British rain is enough to wash that away at a decent pace.

But it's not bad at all, quite far away from what we're used to. Matt's segment was pretty cool, the rest felt a bit meh. I'd say it's now below Top Gear US from my initial impression.

My points from this evening:

  • I fucking hate Chris Evans, he's got a really poor dress sense, really annoying voice and too much enthusiasm whilst sticking to the old clarksonian script. He needs to find his own niche.
  • The bit at the start with the Indian takeaway employees was awkward
  • Reliant segment was shit, I was watching it with my mate and we both went out to put the kettle on
  • Matt's segment was good, not outstanding
  • Star in the reasonably priced car was awkward. Would've been better without the showing off from Gordon but he was better than the other guest whoever that was
  • Like the new rally stage, love Sabine, like the new studio, like the new car, Chris' segment at the start was ok

Extra gear was better than top gear imo

I think i am going to wait a season or two before completely ruling them out. I will probably watch them occasionally  when i dont have anything else going on. But so far i am not overly impressed

Nope didn't like it. Chris Evans shouting, high pitched voice, and over excitement ruined it for me. I actually didn't mind Mat he was OK.

I know Top Gear is all scripted with the jokes and silly antics that go on between then presenters but Clarkson, May and Hammond jell well together and pull it off nicely. The banter going on with Chris and Sabine in the Corvette and Dodge was awkward and boring. The same with Chris and Matt for USA vs UK challenge.

The star in a reasonably priced car segment was crap (never enjoyed this part). Like the idea of changing the track into a rally course though.

Yeah just did not like it. Hopefully as the series goes on it does get better. If it does not I will not watch. I can see BBC scraping Top Gear if the viewer numbers does not match up to with past series.

Going to see what the spin show is like.

Cant wait for Grand Tour though.

Haven't seen it yet, but...

I hate Chris Evans, he's a twat.

I predicted it would suck, and go down in flames.

The fan reaction to the first episode, from what I have seen, correlates with my prediction.

I hope it goes down in flames, and the BBC realize that they killed the most popular television program ON EARTH, because of some chicken shit who couldn't take a busted lip, and give one right back.

The guy JC punched didn't even report the incident, Clarkson rang up the BBC and reported himself. Are you seriously suggesting they should ignore it because it's top gear?

I'm suggesting that maybe killing a show and eventually putting a bunch of people out of work (when the show inevitably goes under and gets canceled) is probably worse overall, than a split lip that you'd find on a playground at elementary school.

Kind of a shame they couldn't get someone better than Chris Evans, I actually do want to see what Sabine Schmitz comes up with for the show. She's freakin awesome.

Clarkson crossed the line in that incident. His time with the BBC was over and he knew it. BBC management had a love-hate relationship with him and he was already on warning. Any cockup would be enough to see him booted, and he certainly left no question on the size of cockup comitted. Still, that is in the past now, lawsuits have been settled, and we can just look to the future. The Grand Tour has the players to continue, with the 3 presenters and executive producer, and we will wait and see what happens next.
