AMD releases R3 Value SSDs

Prysin
Quote

AMD made additions to its Radeon-branded SSD lineup, with the new R3 Series. Targeted at the entry-level segment, these drives come in capacities of 120 GB, 240 GB, 480 GB, and 960 GB; and combine TLC NAND flash memory with Silicon Motion SM2256KX controllers. The 120 GB, 240 GB, and 480 GB variants offer read speeds of up to 520 MB/s, the 960 GB variant up to 510 MB/s. The 120 GB variant writes at up to 360 MB/s, the 240 GB and 480 GB variants at 470 MB/s, and the 960 GB variant at up to 450 MB/s. The drives are built in the 7 mm-thick 2.5-inch form-factor, and feature the SATA 6 Gb/s interface. The 120 GB, 240 GB, and 480 GB variants are priced at US $40.99, $69.99, and $136.99, respectively. Prices of the 960 GB variant are not known.

These are probably rebrands from someone else. The "last gen" R7 SSDs was made by OCZ, and was essentially minutely improved ARC100s. That being said, the ARC100 is a fantastically solid drive reliability wise, so while the Radeon branded SSDs was overpriced, they were atleast performing decently.

For those who do not understand why AMD is doing this: It is so they can offer TOTAL system packages, which no other manufacturer can do atm. ONLY AMD can offer a CPU, RAM, GPU and Storage solution from the same brand. This is more of a OEM thing/"OCD" system builder thing rather then a actual consumer thing.

I cannot figure what rebrand this SSD is.... I searched up the controller but that gave no matches.... If you take out the KX the SM2256 controller is capable of higher reads and writes.... And I can't find any TLC SSDs besides this one that start with writes in 350 MB/S range. Very strange.... I'm genuinely confused by this.

Six of those 480GB ones in Raid 0 should be cost effective since I already have the backplane for them

In case the moderators do not ban me as requested, this is a notice that I have left and am not coming back.

$ sign = usd for me. cad$ = canadian dollar. Might be an european thing.

Easy mistake to make, but there are about a dozen countries that use the $ and have a "Dollar" currency.

$ != USD. $number USD = USD

It's something that should always be clearly specified, especially on an International forum. Especially on said forum when the creators and owners of said forum are Canadian. In Canada, we don't internally refer to the dollar as CAD, we just use the $ sign. Just like the USA, and Australia do as well. So here it's always best to specify the actual currency. Unlike the GBP and the Euro, multiple different currencies use the same $ sign.

Anyway, back on topic, the prices seem pretty good actually, and AMD branding isn't a bad thing, especially if you're doing a themed build, for example.

Dem prices though. The trusty SP550 is still $57 for 240GB and $105 for 480GB, so it's going to continue to be my recommendation.

According to PCWorld it is made by a company called Galt.

Quote

The SSDs are actually made by a company called Galt, which is also responsible for support. AMD is now competing with Intel, SanDisk, and Samsung in the SSD market.

Not sure who galt is but let me do a quick search and see if I can find this more about this company.

So...my next laptop will have a Zen APU (hopefully), AMD DDR4 SODIMM (if its not overpriced) and an AMD SSD (if its not overpriced, I have an OCZ Arc 100 already-its been a really good SSD).

they should be Trion 150s or ARC 150s.

on the Previous SSDs, it said AMD RADEON at front, but with a clearly visible OCZ logo at the back.

96% sure they're Trions.

EDIT: Fun fact, Toshiba owns OCZ. Never knew that.

7 hours ago, Dan Castellaneta said:

$41 for a 120GB SSD that's more than likely a rebranded OCZ Trion. I see AMD's trying to drive away people from the Kingston V300.

The SM2256-family controller conclusively confirms that it is NOT a rebranded OCZ Trion (either 100 or 150). Those use a Toshiba TC58 controller.
