The DMCA was created for a 1998 internet, now almost 20 years later, there is no argument it needs to be updated.

 

The DMCA has been a pain for a long time for many people, especially content creators on the internet,

With YouTube being a great example.

After a lot of complaining on Social Media and other forms,

with movements such as #WTFU (Wheres The Fair Use), the US Government has decided to start listening,

and wants your feedback on how they can improve the DMCA.

 

Talk about how it effects you (if you're a viewer or a content creator), explain ideas of how they can modernise the DMCA.

 

Here's the kicker, the deadline is April 1st 11:59 EST

(No its not an April 1st Joke)

Time is running out and action needs to be taken, now.

 

My Opinion:

Basically what I wrote above, those are my words. There is no set article for news. But this movement, I would consider News Worthy.

The Internet flourishes because all of the stuff people make and share. But, there's a force that has kept works off the Internet entirely, making it so that there's a whole host of content that most us never get to see or hear. The current notice and takedown system for copyright unnecessarily allows for abuse. With the current DMCA rules, copyright holders can censor and takedown practically any online content, just by saying that it infringes their copyright—no court order or oversight required. It's time to bring fair use back to the Internet.

 

The DMCA was created to help curb piracy, but all too often it is abused to censor content with valid free speech or fair use rights. Video and music creators are having their work taken down and their income stolen by big corporations who bet that nobody has the legal resources to challenge them. And even when people successfully challenge a takedown and get their work restored, oftentimes there is lasting harm done to their reputation or income.

 

It's time to take a hard look at the DMCA. A clear fix to the current system is to impose penalties on corporations who abuse the DMCA by issuing false takedowns.

Guys, this is not a joke, this is a serious chance we have to do something for a better future.

 

Everybody should watch that video, and then visit the link to the 'take action' page in the description. It doesn't take long at all, and it can help expand the free/fair use laws for people who make youtube videos and other content. I'm sure content creators out there support this, and they would use your support as well. It's a free way to support the content creators you love (and I'm guessing you're only on these forums because of a certain content creating group...).

DMCA is bullshit and is not up to date with modern content.

Yeah that is ridiculous. Honestly I have seen videos taken down over music that was playing at a sweet 16 party that had copyright laws on it. The point of the video was for the girls birthday... Not to illegally share the music.
