Nvidia cancels plans for Vulkan support on Fermi GPUs

During a webinar hosted by Khronos Group, NVIDIA was questioned whether they will add GeForce 500 series to support list for the Vulkan API. NVIDIA’s Engineer, Jeff Bolz stated that they are not planning to bring Vulkan support to their Fermi cards which is not due to an engineering issue but rather an install base issue. The quote is posted below:

“We are currently not planning to support for 4-5 (Fermi) class GPUs. It is not an engineering issue, it’s an install base issue. So if that causes you pain, please contact your local NVIDIA representative and let me know.”

While NVIDIA is openly stated that they are not planning to support GeForce 400 and GeForce 500 series cards with Vulkan API, that still doesn’t mean that the GPUs are designed to run Vulkan. In fact, NVIDIA has long been stating that Vulkan GPU support is offered on their Fermi cards but it seems like the issue is not with how these graphics chips were designed but rather with their install base. We know that NVIDIA captured a large market share with their Maxwell graphics cards and they had a large chunk of users who were Fermi owners upgrade to either Kepler or Maxwell. I

This is said, but then again, these cards are nearly six years old. A 3GB 580, however, is still a capable card (around the same performance as a 760) albeit a bit hot.

400/500 series is dated now, they need to go back to releasing games that will only run on high end hardware to force people to update every year like the early 2000's. In reality Vulkan/dx12 should be the catalyst to force people to move to the latest hardware because people complaining that a 2016 game wont run on their 2010 hardware  need to dissapear

Its going to be like 2 years before vulkan will become relevant currently its just a raw api with hardly any tools/middleware, by that time you should upgrade anyway since a 200$ pascal/volta/polaris will wreck your 400 series.

Either way its the right choice if they can focus more effort on 500 series onward (or 600?) for better quality.

I don't think you could get any further from the truth if you actually tried. C'mon everyone, say it with me: "Fireball Fermi refers to the 400 series, not the 500 series". To this day, the GTX 580 still holds a record as one of the coolest running flagship GPUs of all time, whilst the GTX 480 runs even hotter than the 290x. I happen to own a blower-style factory-overclocked GTX 580 that peaks around 65C while under full load. If you're going to bandwagon, do your research first. First gen Fermi was a train wreck, second gen Fermi was one of the best architectures Nvidia has ever produced.

Those are the ones that need it. I don't see low hardware demanding games using Vulkan for a super long time since adaptation is going to be slow to begin with. I could be wrong though.

The point of vulkan isn't only to bring software overhead down, it's also to bridge together different types of systems, so developers don't have to use directx for windows (superior to opengl), and opengl for linux and mac (neither of which have directx available to them).

Nice, 400 series is still decent. Heres my 465. Temps are better now.

After 6 years there's no way your card isn't throttling since the thermal paste is probably useless. So here's what you do:

 

1) Replace the paste and clean it up if it's still working

 

2) Put it on a media center, give it to a sibling or friend, or even use it as a cool looking paper weight or wall decoration. Fuck you could even put it to fold

 

3) Buy a motherfucking 950. If you're reading this you can probably afford 150 bucks.

I have 580 and it's pretty decent, unfortunately i got the 1,5 gb, the day i bought it i never think i'd need the 3 gb...

 

Anyway it's still good to go at least until pascal/polaris come out
