Wikipedia starts work on $2.5M internet search engine project to rival Google

wyattzx

page1-463px-Knowledge_engine_grant_agree

Not a whole lot to say here, folks! Straight from Wikimedia themselves, Wikipedia has begun work on a search engine in an attempt to rival Google. Apologies if there's not a lot of information here, but all of the documents can be found below!

Source: Wikimedia

While they're not directly attempting to "take down" Google, this is an interesting project no less, and I'm curious what's to come of if, considering Wikipedia's scale and contributions to the internet since its inception.

That's what I was about to say. One moment they couldn't afford to maintain Wikipedia, so now that they can...of all the things the could have spent the money on...they want to make a search browser...to compete with Google. Who da fck needs to get fired.

I don't think $2.5m, or even $25m would fund a decent search engine.

They wouldn't want it to be a "decent" one anyway: read my previous post.

Just now, MoonSpot said:

Where did the 2.5mil figure some from?  After a quick look I only saw 250k.

On page 9, it details it further, coming in at just under $2.5m.

Thanks!

Look forward to trying it out when they've made some headway.

So the people who have to beg for money on their site is going face to face against the richest company in the world. Yeaaa.. good luck with that. MAYBE it will be as good as Bing. LOL

They have some market share though not much, also there's a good reason it has been nick named as the porn search engine.

this is one of the greatest thing that has happened to me recently, and it happened on this forum, those involved have my eternal gratitude http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/198850-update-alex-got-his-moto-g2-lets-get-a-moto-g-for-alexgoeshigh-unofficial/ :')

i use to have the second best link in the world here, but it died ;_; its a 404 now but it will always be here

It will be another Apple Maps situation. Google will win even if they both do the same things. No amount of money they throw at it will give them the experience that Google ultimately has.

I have a really big doubt that 2.5 million can "buy" you a search engine that beats Google.

Wikimedia must have seen the failure that was Bing and believed that they could do better—otherwise they wouldn't develop their own. They at least believe that they'll have an edge over Google in some way. I could imagine one of those edges being a better privacy policy since Google essentially sells your information to advertisers. Regardless of what the edge is, whether it's enough to break people off from Google remains to be seen. Declaring it a flop is being premature.

the donations were "to help keep the site up" not "to fund a useless project that nobody asked for"

looks like they lied...

I thought they already had one, you go to Google and type wiki after whatever you put in. Give me 10 percent of what I just saved you, Wikimedia.
