What do you guys use your computers for? Is it overkill?

remington3

since im only really gaming every other weekend or so id say its definitly overkill. i couldve done with just one ssd and an even lesser gpu. but i like having power when its eventually needed. so im planning my next upgrade to be totally overkill and maybe have a smaller system for everyday and only boot up the beast when needed.

"You know it'll clock down as soon as it hits 40°C, right?" - "Yeah ... but it doesnt hit 40°C ... ever  😄"

Core 2 duo w/ gtx 660. My only thing is I would prefer a quad and more ram(although I should probably just build a simple machine when the time comes). Moslty light gaming or when it strikes me to check out a game. It's a "productivity" machine for the most part. No over kill here.

for my main rig I've an i7 4770, 16gb ram and a strix gtx 970, with 3tb hdd and 128gb ssd, then 2x22" monitors, an rgb k65 and a g600 mouse. i occasionally make solidworks models and play the odd game of gta 5. its probably overkill for the small amount i actually use it, but when i do is very capable so its worth having the power.

And I had a friend the other day (a "gamer") ask me whether or not he should get a 980Ti.

He plays CS:GO exclusively.

Sometimes I see kids that buy the top of the line Alienware computers and play on a hundred dollar 1080p monitor. I almost feel bad.

Specs in sig. I don't think it's overkill because I can probably get away with not upgrading anything but RAM and maybe CPU for about three years or so.

I completely forgot to mention that I am a student and now that I think about it having a 1440p monitor is really nice.

Sometimes having the more expensive part just makes you feel so much better when you are using it haha

I built my pc with one goal in mind.. 60fps at 1080 at highest settings for everything at the time.  I failed.  Now I hardly game at all, and mostly just use it for spotify/youtube/ordering the odd pizza :D

As far as overkill goes.. who cares.. I don't see why people think like that.. "oh you don't need this psu its overkill.. oh that video card is overkill for what you want to do.."

Who the hell cares?  What business is it of anybodies but your own?  Having 'overkill hardware' sometimes just means its one thing you don't have to upgrade again for twice as long as something else.  Sometimes it's just what you want...

Use my PC to it's limits almost everyday while gaming (CPU/GPU at 100% load). Wouldn't mind upgrading to an i7, but it suits my needs well, as-is. Not overkill at all. :)

Yes. My pc is massive overkill for what I do. I don't need a 6700hq and 16gb ram, but it is good to know I am not going to be anywhere near the limits of my system for a while.

I want to say that my pc is overkill. I just watch youtube videos and play maybe 2-3 games. The games I play, I unfortunately can't get anywhere near medium settings on 4k, don't know know why I bought a 4k monitor when I knew I only had a gtx 670 in the first place.

Rendering, slicing 3D prints, 3D modeling, 1440p gaming... Surprisingly, my i7+7970 combo is pretty well-suited for what I need it to do.

My middling Lion of a PC, Nala, suits my needs quite well. With a 768P "HD"TV, the GTX 960 stomps just about anything I throw at it, though the most demanding game I put to it is from 2013. The i5 is quite well suited to emulation, and the occasional video edit and rendering task whenever I feel like it.

I do have plans to nab a 16 GB kit from a friend for a total of 24 GB of RAM.

CPU: 5820K

RAM: 32gb

GPU: 980 GTX

Storage: Western Digital Black x 2 in Raid 1

Use:Some gaming, mainly content production. :)

Did everyone see that? Because I will not be doing it again.

Absolutely, dual gtx 780 special editions (twice as much vram each as the standard) powering 2 1440p monitors (though only ever game on 1 at a time)

4770k clocked at 4.5ghz

2x 1tb SSDs

about the only reasonable thing is my RAM at 16gb

The only thing that even remotely taxes the system is GTA V maxed out, though I've not tried any of the typical benchmark games like crysis.

I'm mostly playing kerbal space program, flash games, 90's games from GOG, WoW and saints row so massively overkill
