What do you guys use your computers for? Is it overkill?

remington3

To be honest, yes mine is overkill for what I use it for. I do nothing that necessitates the i7 4790k I have. I spend 95%+ of the time using the internet and watching YouTube on it. Then the games I play don't require that much power but dammit, I wanted to have the best (that I could afford). 16GB of Corsair Dominator Platinum, completely unnecessary but screw it. Why not? In actuality, the kit just matched my rig and I needed RAM to get my old PC running again for an HTPC build (I scavenged the 8GB of Corsair Vengeance LP from it to get my new PC running at first). Why buy cheap stuff for the used part build when I can buy better stuff for the main PC and hand down the old stuff?

Funnily enough though, I still rock an old GeForce GTX 770 that I bought 2 years ago for my old PC. Since AAA gaming just isn't something I do often anymore, I keep pushing back the upgrade to upgrade other stuff. However, it could be one of those, "if you build it, they will come" things. Maybe if I bought a new card, I'd be more inclined to play games that take advantage of it.

Depends on what I do, but i guess it kind of is built for purpose.

Gaming:

-2500 and 970 can handle current games at 1440p just fine. not maxed out but its good enough for me.

Studying/ programming:

Mechanical keyboard and dual-monitor setup work like a charm.

Music and browsing

I guess everything is overkill for those tasks, but sometimes, for the really low end stuff like looking at ppts all day during exams, I often switch to my laptop - bring power consumption down etc. (You start to take stuff like that into account when you pay your own electricity bill^^)

I think my dual GTX 970s is completely appropriate for internet browsing and the several year old games I play.

I have a PC worth over £2500 not including parts Ive replaced (would be probably over £3000 and I use it for Facebook, Youtube, Reddit and watching movies and TV shows. My original intent was to play triple A titles and edit & render videos, but I only played League Of Legends and I dont even play that any more. Anyone want to buy my PC off me so I can build a Mini ITX system to save space? :(

Used to use mine for mild gaming (LFD2, MWF) and some video and photo editing when I was still in highschool. Now it's mostly for rudimentary coding and web browsing.

Mine is perfect for what I use it for, lots of web browsing and gaming. The only games that max the system is Planetside 2 (maxes CPU but still almost never go below 60FPS) and GTA V (will max both GPU and CPU for a couple of seconds at a time)

I use my PC for a bit of gaming, browsing internet and doing a whole bunch of digital art and would say it's underkill for that.. So yeah (specs on profile)

Currently my rig is an old HP DC7900, 6gb DDR2 and a 7870LE, with the GPU being powered by a dfferent PSU.

I use it for BF4 and CSGO and it's perfect, Looking to improve the CPU as mantle doesn't seem to work with my current crimson drivers (will have to downgrade but AMD drivers are crap :P )

I have a Q8200 (quad core 2.33ghz) although I have a feeling that the E8400 (dual core 3ghz) will perform slightly better in BF4 (anyone have experience with the Q8200 in BF4?)

Scrapyard Build Total Cost: $268AUD

Aside for usual web browsing and eventually some high end gaming, I use mine to research math and find prime numbers...

... AND I NEED PASCAL ASAP. Seriously, the overheating on my 970 is so bad that I have to deliberately reduce the app's performance on hot days, otherwise I dive well into the upper 80s, and that's already with the card undervolting itself on it's own!

I just wish Kaby Lake brings AVX 512 to the mainstrean.... I doubt it, but one can dream...............

Hardcore Porn.

But no, I usually just play the basics like World of Warcraft, World of Tanks, some Steam FPS/RTS games, Heroes/Smite and web browsing/chatting. My setup isn't super powerful but it gets the job done and things still look nice.
