Replacing old cpu/mobo/ram with upgrades

Go to solution Solved by TylerD321,

At what ratio do you play games vs. edit videos? The 7800x3d should stomp on the 7900x in games.

Budget (including currency): definitely <$800 ($1100 loonie money) for cpu, mobo and ram

Country: US

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Gaming first with an aim for great 1440p over 4k and video editing

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc):
Corsair 4000D mid-tower atx case with up to 5 additional antec fans
Seasonic FOFUS PX-750W 80+ Platinum
Noctua NH-U12A cooler for the cpu
Silicon Power 2TB XS70 nvme pcie gen4 m.2 (r/w 7300/6800) with a DRAM cache
GeForce RTXTM 3070 Ti 8GB

Razer Turret Wireless Keyboard & Mouse combo
Razer BlackShark wireless headset

After attempting to boot my machine today, it started and then immediately died.  I noticed two gentle whisps of smoke coming off of the motherboard and decided I was overdue to replace my old Ryzen 5 3600.

I'm currently looking at using:
Ryzen 9 7900 ($369)
MSI PRO B650-S ($145)

Corsair Vengeance DDR5 64 GB ($155) [my old ram is ddr4]

I'm currently looking at ~$670 before taxes for the new parts. I wanted to ask here if anyone though I was going astray when considering price per dollar.  I'd rather not overspend, but I'd also rather buy smart, even if I spend a little extra to do so.

I mostly game.
It's the 7900, not 7900x.
And I'm curious as to why that would be?  The higher base clockspeed?

Single thread performance and 3d cache are why the x3d versions of ryzen cpu are generally better for gaming.

Would the 7900x3d be even better?
It has a 4.4 base, 5.6 turbo and 12 cores, but I know the last 4 probably won't mater for gaming. It seems like it'd be worth the extra $30 vs the 7900, or $55 against the 7800x3d.

Edit: I should have said this before, but thanks for all the help.  This is getting me to look at this I didn't think about.

The 7800x3d is better for gaming than the 7900x3d but that might be a good middle ground for productivity and gaming.

All right, I've settled on the 7800x3d.  Looked around and read up on how the x3d cache is split more on the 12 and I understand now.  Editing isn't enough of a concern to choose the worse of the cards for gaming, and paying $55 more for it.

I'll mark this as done.  Thanks again!

dont get slow rams like that itll nuke performance and as soon as you upgrade to a newer cpu that requires faster rams youll probably have to upgrade em again cause they wont clock much higher

get this instead since itll perform better with the stock xmp and when the time comes to cpu upgrade and it needs faster ram you just tune the rams to 7200 8000 or whatever the new cpu needs cause the rams actually come with capable ics and not micron garbage that wont clock past 5500

Yeah I agree with this. I didn't even look at the ram.
