What do you guys use your computers for? Is it overkill?

remington3

I use my PC for playing "mainstream" titles like Fallout 4, Assasians Creed, The Witcher, and Far Cry at 1440p. The only thing I would consider upgrading the graphics card (I'd get Pascal when it comes out) because I think 1440p is so worth it. I don't really think it's overkill because I spend so much time on it, but I have seen $3000-4000 CS:GO machines. I probably have to many fans, but whatever! Having a tricked out pc is awesome and I completely get it, but would you consider your computer overkill?

p.s. anything is overkill if you put it into perspective so I guess I am asking if you fell you aren't using the money you put into the computer properly or to it's potential.

Here's it is:

I don't think mine is overkill for the exact same reason as yours.

And I had a friend the other day (a "gamer") ask me whether or not he should get a 980Ti.

He plays CS:GO exclusively.

Primary Build: i7-4790 · 16GB Hynix DDR3-1600 · Sapphire Tri-X R9 390x · NZXT S340 · Win10 Pro · Seagate Barracuda 1TB T_T

Portable: 2015 Retina Macbook Pro 13" · i5-5257u · 512GB PCIe SSD · Intel Iris 6100 T_T

Monitor seems overpriced. PSU is way overkill, get 80+ gold, platinum is still way too overpriced. Also why two different kinds of SSDs? Just get two 850 Evo's and put them in Raid 0. I would also get a 1TB Hard Drive, partition 500GB of it to backup the two 850 Evo's and use the rest of the drive (524GB) for mass storage like videos, pictures, etc. etc. that you don't need to be super fast. Also do you really need Noctua's? They're a little less than $100 in total, could just get some Enermax T.B. Silence fans, which aren't as good but are much cheaper and if you care prettier.

If you did everything I said you could just barely fit in a GTX 980Ti instead of a GTX 970, which is way better and will run 1440p 60fps ultra settings for the rest of it's life.

If you look at my ongoing build, The Storm, I will be using to play AAA games with settings as high as they can go comfortably at 4K and for digital content creation, using the GPU to do the rendering tasks. And god knows when your piece shoots past 6GB of VRAM and starts to cause issues in terms of textures failing to load, or worse, the scene not loading at all. So I plan on getting two Titan Xs (Yes you heard that right #REKT), but one for now due to budget constraints as a college student on financial aid with almost $6K for a year's worth of college. And pair that with the 6700K because the price is expected to come in the foreseeable future.

So mostly overkill for gaming, but not in 3D tasks :D

My system is the opposite of overkill, I kinda push it a little too hard sometimes. I'm hoping to upgrade sometime soon, hopefully after AMD's zen or Nvidia's Pascal GPU's come out.

Play the occasional game, sometimes streaming, some video editing, rendering, file server, etc. Basically, I do a lot of things with a somewhat limited spec for what it is.

I'm trying to save up for another all around AMD build. Zen + Polaris 11, hopefully isn't wildly out of my reach.

It isn't overkill for me. I use it for AAA games, Indie games, Super light video editing, Rendering.

And Live Streaming and recording videos. And of course surfing the web.

I'm gonna hold out until 490X and then upgrade GPU. Everything else is pretty much solid (Looks at CPU *damnit i'm 1 SKU below the min VR spec* :( )

Judge a product on its own merits AND the company that made it.

Considering how much I use my computer (~40-70 hours a week) I can justify spending on a more expensive machine, and for the games I play, Dark souls 1 & 2, Skyrim, AC: 4, Civ V I don't think it's overkill.
