Low End Video Cards Rant #2

If your CPU doesn't have integrated graphics, and you are thinking about purchasing a $60 graphic card, it's time to put serious thought into

investing that $60 into a new CPU/Motherboard.

So what if someone is getting, say, the Athlon X4 860K for a home/office (non-gaming) PC? For a use like that, if the 750 Ti would be way overkill for performance, what would you recommend instead? Would you insist they switch to a CPU that isn't as good on performance but has integrated graphics for the same price?

You'd have to try hard to justify purchasing the 860K + a sub par GPU.  Like pretending the clocks/cores of the 860K matter while ignoring platforms that are on par/more value.

I am sitting here with my GTX980ti looking down upon all the butthurt people with the GT710 defending it after spending $50-$80 on it

The only butthurt people, are those who actually bought these type of cards, so they go to Youtube, hoping to find a video that justifies their purchase. Sadly there's none. I'm thinking about just grabbing one for back up purposes, say as a tester card. My X99 don't have igpu.

As someone who has purchased low-end GPUs in the past, I will be the first to say that it's not worth it.

The harder people try to justify such a purchase, the more perspective they lose. There's a ton of confirmation bias

present in the video responses Luke doesn't really need to go into the price to performance conversation a second time because I

think the original video covers it more than adequately.

I agree. Low-end GPUs aren't worth the price for the performance you're getting. If anything, run your APU/iGPU for now or buy used if you can't afford a better graphics card. You know I might try that strategy and buy one of two Titan Xs for my build used when they start to pop up on sites like Ebay and Craigslist. What do you think?

I just looked and they used the 9500 GS. On the 7 gamers 1 CPU they used onboard cause they had all 7 slots filled with graphics cards, I think.

Also I was looking back in the history of GPUs, and thinking ... what about using old cards like the GeForce4 Ti, or GeForce 6 series, or even older like pre-nVidia cards? (Assume your mobo has a PCI slot - I was just looking on PCPartPicker and there's a couple LGA2011 boards (a server & a X79) that apparently have it.)

And, what would be the best GPU for gaming with current titles, if you include used GPUs, that runs without even a heatsink? (Or if absolutely necessary, is still single slot low profile and fanless?)

Nvidia has to go back a long time, but if you're talking about cards they sell under their own brand, then yeah, it's not too long ago. GeForce FX and before will be impossible because their AGP. Their PCIe card started with the GeForce 6. I think there was a FX one that has a swtich that allows to run in a PCIe slot, even though the card was designed for AGP. But I'd get rekt more soundly than Austin did in price/performance in SYW3, Luke in physics in SYW1, & 4-way Titan X's vs a Riva TNT. )

To add insult to injury (for the R7 240), when I was attempting to set up a PC for streaming yesterday, I learned that AMD's VCE technology isn't available on the 240 or 250 (VCE 1.0 is available starting at the 250X). Shoving the encoding work onto the CPU ended in a laggy mess, so we decided not to stream.

Most updated PCI card that I know of, is the GeForce 6200. As for using parts before they're born or at least had been on the market a while by then, then both will be running on the Intel 286, 486, Pentium w/MMX, AMD's AM486, K5/K6/K6-2 and that would be almost impossible to build a system using those parts. Forget about installing the current windows or running benchmarks on them.

Much earlier, we have the Intel 8086, 8088, Colossus, Zuse Z1-Z4,  and Charle Babbages's Difference Engine 1 and 2.

The R7 370 is a 110-watt card, whereas the GTX 750 Ti is 60 watts. For some people, like me, that does matter. I want not just performance per dollar, I want performance per watt. Where I live, with the high cost of electricity, I will pay the same or slightly more for a slightly less performing card with a significantly lower TDP.

Between the groups of cards below, I personally would prefer the nVidia cards. Benchmarks are from videocardbenchmark.net, TDP and price are from pcpartpicker, not counting MIRs.

R7 370 - 4219 bench - 110 watts - $126.99

R9 380 - 5,526 bench - 190 watts - $169.99
