Mechanical Keyboard Club!

Dave :)

I just ordered some kailh box burnt orange to complete my gmmk ... I already that them but only 61 of those ...

I also ordered some kailh box silent brown ... been eying them for a while and now was the time.  I thought about getting zilent but the ones I found that were in stock were close to double the price of the kailh box silent brown.

Can't wait to get them.

Yeah, I saw it on clearance at work, my boss offered me 25% off plus my employee discount... Can't really say no to that. Also that was before I built my own so I jumped on that.

Well, I just bought my first mechanical keyboard, an Asus ROG Strix Flare with brown keys.  I was like $150 or more, but it was on sale for like $30 at Amazon, so I said sure, I'll give it a shot.  I hear a lot about them, and reviews say brown is the most common one.

I first got it and it was great.  Smooth keys, long strokes of keyboards of old.  It felt good.  Well, for awhile.  You see, the keys are so smooth, that when I type, I bump the adjacent keys slightly, which wasn't a big deal before, as they keys wouldn't register as they would bind up just enough to not register.

Well, this new keyboard is so smooth, now I keep having to backspace all of the time from two keys registering at one.  lol  This thing is turning into a curse, when it was such a blessing when I got it.

Hopefully I get past this learning curve and I can stop this from happening.  I can really feel the difference in the adjustment in the way I type.  My muscles tire easy as if they are out of shape or something.

I love it overall, it's just this little learning curve, that's turning into a big learning curve.  lol

FYI, my $30 deal turned to be not as good as the sale suggested.  The keyboard was on sale for $150, and Amazon used my rewards points towards my purchase automatically for me.  But it is still think it was worth the price.  Although, I likely could have gotten a better deal in a different brand.

If you ever get another keyboard you should avoid anything cherry speed as the spring is even lighter and the actuation point is higher than the brown you have (don't know if it's cherry that you have now tho but I don't think it matters much there)

Probably yes but in the end if you like that one then it's all good.

The case, plate, keycaps and stuff all affect the sound of a keyboard too, and they'll be the things that make the most difference with a non-clicky switch. Bottoming out will also lead to it being louder.

I might as well share my latest purchase while I'm here, although it's not technically a mechanical board. I recently picked up a HHKB Pro 2, which had already been lubed, and I've added some silencing rings to it, and I'm completely in love with it.

Help a very confused wife out??

I have skimmed this board (and others),and I have watched some of the videos about keyboards that LTTs has up on youtube,  but to be honest I don't understand the technical jargon that is used, so I don't know if what they're recommending is what my husband would like...

Can you all help me learn the terms that I'll need to look for in a (preferably quiet) Mechanical Keyboard listing

for my husband's birthday?

Like what terms should I be looking for, and what do they mean exactly in layman's terms? Thank you so much in advance

Welcome to the forum.

Which board are you referring to by "this board"? Is your husband into mechanical keyboards? Any idea what he currently has now (pictures would help if you are unsure of models)?

Sorry! I just meant that I've looked through a few online forums about Mechanical Keyboards, because I know that he wants a Mechanical one specifically. Unfortunately I wasn't able to learn much from it because I don't know what a lot of the jargon means.

He got a Tesoro Excalibur (model # TS-G7SFL) about 2 years back, and it just broke. His birthday is in a few weeks, so I would like to get him something sturdier, and that is much quieter.

Also: The little cross guys under the keys are blue.

Does he want something quieter, or do you? One thing to keep in mind is that different sounding keyboards almost always feel very different, which he may or may not like.

Any idea if he needs/wants the number pad? There are different sizes of keyboards (the most common are a "fullsize" which is what he has, a "tkl" (tenkeyless) which is the same as a fullsize but without a numpad, and a 60% which is a fullsize without a numpad, arrow/nav cluster, and function row).

What is your budget?

He asked for a quieter keyboard, but I know that he likely asked for that because he knows that it bothers me (his gaming setup is directly beside our couch in the livingroom). I would certainly be willing to get him something more like what he has now if it makes a major difference in gaming and/or ease of use though.

As for type: He needs a full keyboard with numpad for sure. I'm not actually looking for a brand or model recommendation (though I do appreciate hearing that people have enjoyed using a brand or model). I would just like to know what specs to be looking for, or avoiding (and what those things mean) so that I can pick something he will like aesthetically and still get what he needs.

Fair enough lol. Different switches won't directly impact gaming or typing performance, but being used to different switches absolutely will. Some are also just more pleasing to use regardless of experience.

If I were you, I would get him a fullsize GMMK barebones (meaning it will come without switches or keycaps) along with some Kailh BOX White switches (so he can have some very good clicky switches) as well as some Gateron Yellow or, if you're willing to spend more money, Gateron Ink Blacks (both are a linear switch, so there will be no added click noise). The GMMK is hotswap, meaning different switches can be swapped in like Lego, so he can easily try the quieter linear switches but fall back to the clicky ones if he doesn't like them.

You would also need some keycaps, which you can basically choose what you think looks nice. Do you have a colour scheme in mind? There is a keycap set for (almost) everything lol.

Today is keeb delivery day.458526087_0205211531_HDR2.thumb.jpg.ed3c34ee918fe15b2bfd16a7a3c769e4.jpg

You know originally I thought I would hate clicky switches, but they are so much more satisfying to type on that they ended up being my favorite. My favorite clicky switch probably to no ones surprise ended up being box jades as they were quite a bit lighter and a little less muffled than box navys. Also can someone tell what these are? They came with the keeb but I dunno what they are. The black strip is actually a bunch of stickers that are in the shape of a stabilizers leg, I think.0205212247_HDR.thumb.jpg.6f8f079e13eb14c25a81f7edac03be7e.jpg
