Tech Gifts for Non-techies Giveaway!

i wannagive my friend a smartphone... lol

“It would seem that Our Lord finds our desires not too strong, but too weak. We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea. We are far too easily pleased.”

First, thank you for this opportunity!  :)

Years ago, my parents bought a computer, a pre-built desktop with all the best recent tech (at the time cutting edge was a disc drive), to replace their old computer (i don't remember what that one was). I wasn't very knowledgeable in technology and computers back then since both my parents never understood tech very well, and so i wasn't exposed to any tech up to that point. Then, after a few months of light use, black screen. The shiny new computer did not work anymore, and nobody home knew why. Then my uncle came in. He works on big centralized computers and was obviously the guy my parents went to to try to fix the computer. We learned that the hard drive was broken and my parents were furious because the "they were sold a bad computer". My uncle told me that computers had interchangeable parts with different performances and that we could just change the hard drive, but at the time i was little, and when i told my parents that "we can just change the memory, and it will work again" they never did anything with that information. That story resulted in two consequences: My parents were forever stuck with a hatred for computers (and staples since that's where they bought it) and i became fascinated with computers. So much in fact that i opened up and dissassembled then reassembled the "broken" computer several times before getting one that was my own!

Then my father realised that he kinda needs a computer to work on!  :D He now uses a tiny small laptop with a screen smaller than an ipad's and he writes on it every day for hours. I realised there is an hdmi-out port for some reason on his laptop (tested it on the tv, works like a charm) and that's why i would give him a nice big monitor (also his vision is not the best anymore, because, you know, everyone ages). This way his eyes are not getting destroyed by the tiny screen and he can enjoy working a bit more!

there is the link: http://www.amazon.ca/BenQ-27-inch-Monitor-Ultra-GW2760HS/dp/B00ITORMDC/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1449773946&sr=1-3&keywords=monitor

I am already planning giving him a nice ergonomic keyboard this chrismas, so with the monitor, no need for using the tiny thing anymore! ;)

My mom's nexus 7 lived a good life but is now dead. I would like to get her a nexus 9 as a replacement. Right now she has no access to the internet because of the dead tablet.

What I would get, is for my girlfriends dad, a Thrustmaster Flight Controller, any one under $300 would be fine, But this one looks good and easy to use http://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B001CXYMFS/ref=s9_simh_gw_p147_d8_i7?pf_rd_m=A3DWYIK6Y9EEQB&pf_rd_s=desktop-3&pf_rd_r=1AWD3HD3TCK2666TV5KF&pf_rd_t=36701&pf_rd_p=2055623082&pf_rd_i=desktop

Because he's been wanting to play Flight simulator games, but he doesn't have anything to use

I'd get an on-hub router (either model, though the Asus one looks nicer) for my parents who have a Cisco EA4500 router which gives them (and therefore me) trouble all the time. It fails under the load of streaming Netflix to our smart TV and all they know how to do to fix it is turn it off and on again which only works sometimes now.

What they need is a router they can understand. My parents understand the ins and outs of smartphone usage well enough to use the app to prioritize speed to certain devices and trigger a reboot of the router. It also looks a lot better, so we'll be able to place it in a more central location in the house rather than relegating it to the network room in the basement.

The preferred Asus OnHub

The still good TP Link OnHub (preferably in black)

A new phone for my brother Paul. He has an old phone and when he makes calls to me and the rest of the family, it frequently drops calls or sounds as if he's in a wind tunnel :P

one of the sellers of this phone has it for 294, if that goes away or changes this other one would be cool for him too.

Hey Linus etc! My mum and dad have what looks like a 10 year old heating thing and need an upgrade to something like the nest learning thermostat as it will save them money too! The only problem is that we are in England but I hope it will still be fine. http://www.amazon.com/Nest-Learning-Thermostat-3rd-Generation/dp/B0131RG6VK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1449853095&sr=8-1&keywords=nest

If I could afford to - I would buy my technologically stunted mom a NAS device for her home.  As you mentioned in your video it is so easy for me to think 'I will just build it!' but I know that will just end in her having to have me around all the time to maintain the thing.  Her current 'backup' of all photos and videos of her children (me included of course) is a wide array of questionable usb thumb drives that I am confident could explode at any moment.  Now she has her first grand child and even more pictures and sentimental digital items come in, it would be nice for her to have a secure and safe place to store things, without me worrying about getting the dreaded 'something happened...i clicked something...everythings gone' phone call (that I am sure we have all had).

I am sure Linus has WAY more product knowledge than me on the topic...but any sort of NAS thats super easy to use for mobile and desktop would be perfect!  something like http://www.amazon.ca/WD-Cloud-Diskless-Personal-Storage/dp/B00I2P53NY/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1449774616&sr=8-5&keywords=NAS perhaps.

Thanks everyone at LMG for doing this giveaway - huge fan of your videos and what you guys are doing.  Look forward to all the good stuff coming out of the new office.

I would want to get my parents Google's OnHub router. I have been trying to get them to upgrade the router for a long time because we have a larger family and we each have at least one device actively using the network. I think this would be a great way to get them interested in what all the tech world has to offer right now.

Hey guys!

So for my gift I started off thinking about something my mother would actually use in every day life.

Tech is supposed to make life better or easier and if my mother wouldn't use it enough to make it matter then it probably isn't worth it anyway.

So I decided on the Philips Hue starter pack. Lights are something we use every day and also something we are used to. So a change in lighting and control would be more noticeable.

She usually keeps up with the newer Samsung flagship phones so the wireless/app controls wouldn't be an issue. Also if she gets used to bluetooth lights then she might move up to wireless music and more.

Thanks!

This is easy, as a gift I would chose the Logitech MX Master Wireless Mouse for my mother. http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Master-Wireless-Mouse-910-004337/dp/B00TZR3WRM/ref=dp_ob_title_ce (currently priced around: $81.29)

So I was installing some drivers on her computer just yesterday, (and to my unpleasant surprise found out that she uses a total crap-heap of an optical mouse from the '90-s that I wouldn't give to my worst enemies, since it’s so icy-bitty tiny not suited even for a 2 year old child hand). A mouse might seem as something non important, but that is one of the most use peripheral during the entire work day for any computer user. And I know that she would be very grateful since in her age any unpleasant use of keyboard or a mouse tends to enhance any muscle strains and pain in the arms and in the back.

Sadly she doesn't use any more my old Logitech MX 1000, yes it's more than 10 years old, and it's still working but the battery charge simply doesn't provide any usable up time. Not even for a casual daily work, and it has proprietary charger, and no it doesn't have interchangeable batteries.

I know it's a thing of the past, and deserves to be hung in a museum, as my Commodore 64 with the magnetic tape reader (no floppy drive) and the good ol' "The Hunt for the Red October" game. Which brings some mixed memories from my youth, I can't remember did we spent more time watching the colors strips on the screen waiting for a game to load or did we actually spent any good time playing any of them?!? :))) Probably the broadcast from the radio station, that tried to freely distribute the games back in those days over the AM/FM radio waves (now that was some hardcore Wi-Fi streaming), was a bit buggy, or maybe it was the interference from the Chernobyl radiation. All I remember that me and all of my friends, we all just stared at the TV set trying not to blink waiting for that rainbow of colors just to load the damn game so we can spend around 30 minutes (or less) of game-play to the glorious sound of 8-tin bit music. Oh the joy when we actually loaded a game, I think that 6 floors down all of the neighbors knew when we successfully loaded a game. Man those ware some good times.

So.... yeah I would definitely get my mother a new mouse, but It would be great if Santa Linus would sent one to her, it will totally make her and my holidays this year truly unforgeable.

Thank you LTT and happy holidays!

I'de actually get the Audio-Technica ATH-AG1 for my cousin. He's been trying to save up for them since he saw your video review of it about one year ago but without much success so I guess it would be a great surprise  ;)

The Amazon Echo for my aunt/god-mother. She a bit on the older side and could probably use the assistance that this could provide, seeing that i'm no longer able to help her anymore (Recently moved to Europe, meanwhile she's in the US) Anywho, best of luck to whoever wins! And thanks the LMM for hosting this!

What do you mean by "it's you again", of course it's me again!

I would love to get my parents an Amazon Echo or something, but I know for a fact they would not take advantage of it.  They have already embraced some of the more popular tech like an amazon fire tv stick and a bluetooth all in one speaker- so I don't really think those would be that great of a gift for them either.  Really, the best tech I could give them for under $300 would be a pair of digital frames like these:

http://www.amazon.com/NIX-Advance-Digital-Motion-Sensor/dp/B00Z9ZP5HY/ref=sr_1_2?s=photo&ie=UTF8&qid=1449775709&sr=1-2-spons&keywords=digital+photo+frame&psc=1

They would use them, and I could easily teach them how to use them without my help.

I know I'm going to be really unpopular.... BUT! I would gift them an Apple TV. They already have iPhones and iPads, so why not complete the deal with an easy to streame to and easy to use mediacenter?
 :D

Anyother GREAT gift would be the google ONHUB. It is hard dealing with internet problems over the phone....
