Tech Gifts for Non-techies Giveaway!

Something I would love to get for my mom is a Corsair K70 RGB Mechanical Keyboard. Shes a girly girl like me and is always on her computer, and when she saw that I got a fancy RGB keyboard from a friend as a birthday present, I was surprised she didn't rip it out of my system and plug it in hers. The best part about it is that its super easy to use and download profiles from the internet without worrying about customizing the macros/lighting on each individual key.

So my mum (yes I'm british!) always complains about the road noise when we are in the garden, so my dad has had this crazy idea to make a noise cancelled garden.

Now I've known from the start it was never going to work, firstly the idea is just bonkers and he is using indoor speakers outside.

He is basically trying to use the noise cancelling technology in a pair of headphones and think it will work with the whole garden....

Of course it isn't going to work! But that doesn't mean we can't have an alternative way.

I would really like it if you could get me these

Garden rock speakers:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00PSFKMQO?keywords=rock%20speaker&qid=1449769043&ref_=sr_1_8&sr=8-8

google put the £ to $ conversion at $298.63 so I hope it doesn't change for you! If not these ones would be great:

http://www.amazon.com/Outdoor-Garden-Waterproof-Granite-Speakers/dp/B003OFADNC/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1449769526&sr=8-3&keywords=rock+speaker

So why do I want them if I know his project is going to fail?

Well because I have some running steam noises (one of those HQ 10 hour youtube vids) and will play that through the speakers instead.

Merry Christmas and good luck everyone!

My father isn't exactly anti-tech, but he does like having just the essentials in gadgets and stuff. However he does have to use te compute really often for work and I've heard him complain about his hands getting tired and being uncomfortable with that keyboard. So I'll go with a mechanical one, with brown cherry switches (blues are REALLY loud...). Not really sure of which one, so I'll just go with a sure shot at the Corsair K95. Not like he'll use the fancy RGB lightning, but having programmable keys for shortcuts and even setting the entire keyboard to a fixed background color will probably be useful at one point or another :)

EDIT: Typo

 - Raspberry PI 2 with XBMC installed. Amazon

  • I have already bought this for my father (last christmas) and he is very happy with it.

 - And why you ask?

  • A extremely simple to use all in one media centre.
  • No need for another remote. TV's with HDMI will most likely work on the same controller.
  • Handles 1080p video wirelessly with a 4$ WiFi dongle.
  • Very versatile and easy to use plugins.
  • Can automatically downloads subtitles.
  • Does not lock you into one ecosystem.
  • Plugins offer high quality HD television streams out of the sparse HD broadcast zones.
  • You may even find some specialised sports streams etc.

I would get my parents a chromecast 2. the reason why? they still use cable tv and are allways complaining about the fact that there is to little to watch (lol). Also the ammount of adds here on belgium TV is getting ridiculus, with a chromecast you can tackle both problems at the same time!

link: for some reason amazon decided that you cannot buy these on their site :'(

A NAS system for my sister and my mum, because my sister's phone's storage (non expandable) is always on the brink of bursting and my mother still uses emails sometimes to transfer files from her laptop to her phone. Also, nobody in this house seems to ever have and/or find any usb drives.

I would definitely get my grandmother one of these more modern tablets.

http://www.amazon.com/KOCASO-W700-Windows-8-1-Tablet/dp/B0115W8RLK/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1449769668&sr=8-2&keywords=7%22+Windows+8+Tablet

She still uses a very old Kindle Fire that has a terrible battery life (seriously it drains in like 2 hours IDLE) so I think that this tablet while, cheap, can get her a lot more use than her current one.

And since this is a $300 dollar budget, I'd probably spring for a GoPro Camera for my parents. They sometimes don't have a camera with them when they need one (or if they do, it is very old) so if they were to get a GoPro, this would amend this issue greatly.

And finally, I am still technically within the $300 Margin on this one (barely!) so I would get one more gift for my parents, that in the form of an Intel Compute Stick.

http://www.amazon.com/Intel-Compute-Stick-Windows-BOXSTCK1A32WFCR/dp/B00UZ3CYE2/ref=sr_1_3?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1449770003&sr=8-3&keywords=Intel+Compute+Stick

Since they travel a lot for work and such, this would be great in-case they need a computer on the fly, and its lightweight and very portable.

Thanks so much! I hope I can win these for my family! :)

I have a few "older" family members who love to watch old movies, "Listen to music??" on  the youtube and check out  the facebook whenever one of the younger kids brings a laptop by thier house  - Grandpa Harold, Gran Gran and My Inlaws/outlaws (Bob and Pam)

I would love to be able to connect youtube/facebook to thier tv - I thought Chromecast would be pretty easy setup and easy for me to "help desk"

So I'm requesting Chromecast - or would welcome a suggestion

........Amazon has banded Chromecast?????????????

What the what????

Hi guys! :)

So my choice: I'd get a nice monitor for my beloved brother who plays cs:go very well, but he only has a laptop and a c**p piece of s**t as a monitor. I don't want to bother anyone with it's brand but honestly I feel bad for his eyes....
So my choice would be this:
http://www.amazon.com/BenQ-RL2460HT-24-Inch-ZeroFlicker-LED-Lit/dp/B00ITORJRQ/ref=sr_1_5?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1449768930&sr=1-5&refinements=p_89%3ABenQ%2Cp_36%3A-30000

Thanks for the opportunity, Merry Christmas everyone! :)
Cheers

I have wanted to get a new keyboard for my awesome dad because he is still using the POS keyboard that comes with prebuilt some desktops because he got it free from work. I want to give him this, because, surprisingly he is an avid gamer and actually got me started as a kid with Starcraft and other blizzard games. And I just think it's a shame that he still is using a reallllly bad keyboard and never had the joy of a mechanical keyboard. Link (Corsair Gaming K95 RGB Mechanical Gaming Keyboard, Aircraft-Grade Aluminum (CH-9000220-NA) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B014W1Z4S0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awd_AOBAwbGFQB41F)

This keyboard in particular because he loves tinkering with programs and finding all the little feature and will love the macro keys.

I would get the Sony SW2 for my Dad, as it suits him perfectly. Currently he is behind with work, getting stressed (its a new job) and needs to check online for emails ect constantly, so I want to get him something to help him ease the work load without actually doing the work for him. I thought that this would be a good solution so he doesn't have to run upstairs every few minutes (or stay glued to the screen) and its well under the $300.00 budget (I think if i do the maths right, I only do £)

Thanks for doing the giveaway!

Tom

I'd be getting my parents A Transformerbook. Link

They use Skype and a couple streaming services a lot. Other than that, they use their PC for mostly email, documents and general internets. They also travel quite a bit and my mom has a trip planned to Wales to see my sister early next year, so The transformerbook would fit nicely. It's light enough to function as a tablet, but has the keyboard for typing. They're already used to Windows 10, too. If not eligible, get the next best thing. Windows, portable, easy to use (or to teach to use).

I was thinking a new modem + NAS, but seeing as I'd have to troubleshoot everything and drive 2 hours to them if they needed help with either, I thought otherwise. Plus, I'm not that good with networking.

Good luck everyone, happy holidays and such to you and your families. May the winner be praised among their family and become the "tech-savvy-one-who-will-resolve-all-our-problems-anywhere-anytime-person"

PS: An awesome giveaway, guys! It's original and engages the community (as usual for your stuff). Only gripe is that you don't help at all with our choices. Or at least you don't say you will.

The Audio-Technica AT-LP2D-USB for my Dad. Its an LP to MP3 converter that would allow him to get all 100+ of his LPs onto the recently set up (by yours truly) home server to enjoy anywhere in the house. His record player from his University days has kicked the bucket and he hasn't listened to his favorite Supertramp album on vinyl in some time!

Pretty much a good headphone. (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B004444O3W)

My parents/sister have never used a good headphone in their lifes so far, they all use crappy 3 euro in-ear monitors (if you are even allowed to call them that)

I'd love for them to hear good quality music, instead of being convinced youtube vids are totally fine.

Thanks for the possibility to win this :)

I would love to get my dad a Nexus 9. His Nexus 7 is suffering from a memory issue to the point where it literally takes 10min 20sec to launch google chrome, so is essentially unusable. He needs it for work (taking notes and the like) as well as for leasure. We cannot currently afford another one, he is using a notebook at the moment. Good luck, and I'd love to win!

Thanks!
