Why do we need more than 24fps in games...

CyberJesus88

So 24fps is good enough for movies and according to science we can only see can only see 24fps.

So why do we need higher for games.

Opinions?

nope, New science says that our eyes adjust to the framerate a monitor is outputing you can even see the difference in a 1500 hz monitor but you would get very dizzy.

The thing about "you can only see 30fps" is such lies, the Human eyes can capture way more images than that in a second, and you don't see in FPS. I'm sure there is a limit somewhere in what you can physically see without overdoing it, but it's a LOT higher than say 120Hz, your eyes adjust to their environment so it would make sense. Also, anyone that plays normally at a decent framerate will be able to see the difference between 30FPS, 60FPS or 120FPS, 60 and upwards is where I like it. Oh and about Movies, like 99% of movies are in 24FPS, it seems wrong when it's changed, I watched Rambo on Blu Ray and I did not like it at all.

you can see more than 24fps so i dont know where your science is coming from

we need higher frame rates because in games you look around there is more action going and stuff like that and you want it to be smooth.

you will notice the difference. try playing at 24 fps. then try playing at 60. at first i thought i suck but it was because of input lag an unresponsiveness of controls.

It's about the responsiveness. Higher FPS feel better. It's all about the control.

The reason is because the time between your input and a result happening on the screen increases as the fps gets lower. at 30 fps the time between input and output is doubled compared to 60hz so it feels laggy. when watching a film you are not inputing anything so you dont feel the lag, and this whole myth about your eyes can only see at 24 fps isn't true where this myth comes from is that below around 22-23 fps a video appears to be a slidewhow rather than a film, this varies person to person but 22-23 fps is around where a series of pictures appears to be a film.

On a 60hz monitor,120fps feels alot smoother than 60fps on a music game I play. On any other game 60fps feels fine.

simple comparison would be to boot up GTA4 on xbox, which runs at around 24fps, then boot it up on a good PC which runs it at 60+fps and see if you can't tell the difference.

basically people see differently linus and my friend for example HATE low fps like 30 or 40 they love 60

me on the other hand dont care cuz ive played so much at 20-30 fps it makes little difference to me when im at 60 fps(my screen refresh rate)

and yes i do play games at 60+fps alot ive just played more on 25~ fps cuz my old pc was shit

take note i havent seen ~120hz for long enough to judge it

The reason why movies and other stuff is at 24~ fps, is because it's a constant 24 fps. In games it can be something like 60-40-30-60-20-25-30-60, which makes that "laggy" effect. Movies and shows etc that are shot at a constant rate, are 24-24-24-24-24-24-24-24 or so on, thus you don't get a jumping up and down frame-rate creating a more "smooth" feel.

Someone showed me this awhile back, unsure how true it is but it really makes sense, When I play games at 60fps it feels much laggier than 144, which is what my monitors are capped at.

I just expect more frames when using high end graphics card setups... I dont have to notice the diff at all, I dont mind running over 300+ F.P.S on DMC with only 67hz. Its just very nice to see!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The eye doesn't see in "frames per second". Your "science" is wrong. 24 FPS is the lowest frame-rate at which a moving image is perceived.

Games require user input so movement needs to be responsive and clear to the user, higher FPS achieves this. With movies you are just along for the ride, so it doesn't matter nearly as much. Also, physco-optical factors which leads to brain not liking it when objects move fast across a movie screen and are also clearly defined (as would happen with higher FPS movies) because this isn't what happens when we observe fast moving objects in real life. It's why you see some people complaining the illusion of faster-than-normal-motion in movies shot at 48fps.

Higher FPS in games is never bad. Higher FPS in movies is subjective.

  • 5 months later...

Movies stay at a constant 24 fps so it gives the illusion that it isnt laggy and they also use many tricks like motion blur. if you compare a movie in 24 fps and the same movie at 60 you will see the difference. Kinda like buying a regular dvd and the Blue ray version. Also as someone said before humans dont see in frames and yes we can see the difference in frame rates on a monitor. 30 - 60 - 90 - 120 will always look different and smoother as the higher the number goes and Im willing to bet that no matter how high the number goes we humans will always be able to tell the difference. Really I think its just what ever looks good to us looks good to us so if your happy with 30 stick with 30 or if you want 60 aim for 60.

It's a myth.

Yep.

Its basically enough that it would appear to be "smooth" motion to the majority of the population. That's why 24fps movies has problems on fast action scenes.

Its smoother when its higher than 24fps. When I play counter-strike i get like 100fps maxed out on my 60hz monitor. When i play battlefield 3 i get only 30ish and it seems a lot less fluid. try it out.
