Now imagine your playing Skyrim with shitloads of mods, and Skyrim chews up 8.3GB of that-spilling over to the pagefile on your HDD then the one on your SSD. I had to pull a 4GB stick out of my i5 rig for my i7.

I really don't understand why people use that many tabs and then insist on using Chrome. It's like complaining that food is what made you fat and then you order two Big Mac meals.

I have 60 chrome tabs open, vlc running in the background and I'm only using 3.7gb of memory. Want to know why I get different numbers from you? Because windows will use the extra ram for caching. If you are using an ssd not having as much caching is not a problem.

I easily go over 10GB with chrome, skype, and GTA V open. I'm sure you could find ways to get away with less than 8GB, but for my everyday usage 16GB is a necessity. If I had to close chrome every time I wanted to play a game I would rip my hair out.

I close everything when I game. No point in leaving it open if I'm not using it.

You obviously suck at organization...

I only have 2-3 tabs open at a time, and a few hundred bookmarks

If I want to go to a different page, I just take 1.35 seconds to click the bookmark, and not leave 100 tabs open

 

the reason google chrome uses so much ram is because it caches all the pages in ram so that switching tabs or going back is almost instant, unlike all other browsers that have to reload the webpage to conserve ram

so really google chrome is being awesome by actually taking advantage of your rams speed to give a smoother and faster browsing experience

 

its not google chrome's fault that you dont know how to manage your crap in an organised fashion

I don't think I can ever have less than 32GB in a single system now. Even with 12GB, I'm always using half of my RAM, and at least half of my 8GB page file. Most of the time I go PAST 8GB on it.

 

EDIT: Yup, 7.4GB of RAM, and 9GB in page with just 7 tabs open in Chrome.

The firefox memory leak and my penchant for tab whoring put me at 32GB of ram in early 2011. since they fixed the leak I cant seem to break 23Gb of usage from all of my "Vital" tabs being open.

Well shit. I just had to do a hard-shutdown and pull the last 4GB stick out of my i5 rig. 13.8GB being used by Skyrim-the computer struggles before Skyrim crashes.

I don't understand having so many tabs open. I use about 5 when just casually browsing the web. The only time I have more is when I'm researching something or working on something. But when I'm done, they all get closed. Bookmarks are my friend, though.
