Wow, calling a design flaw based on somebody's ignorance.

Who in the world would put the s pen backwards anyway. 

I own a Note 3 and never heard of anybody who freaking puts the s pen backwards.......in fact you can't even do it.

I wonder if any one tried this with previous Galaxy Note phones Like 4, 3, 2, and 1.

Echh... Every software and hardware company should know that user is their biggest enemy.
Problem is that it slides in very easily, people are just going to see if it fits out of curiosity. It is same thing as counting this as solution to a program "Don't press X twice" instead of fixing actual bug.

Wow, I am disappointed in people here.

This is a serious design issue. The pen straight up shouldn't be designed to allow ambiguous insertion. Put a notch or otherwise internal catch that wouldn't allow the pen to be inserted.

People, even those who aren't "idiots" will just insert their pen after being done or being rushed and leaving. Hell I've seen my own friends, certainly not "idiots" who just ram their pen back when their done. Only it's not a problem with the old ones because pens aren't going in multiple ways.

Disappointing in Samsung for not accounting for basic human condition and more disappointed in people here victim blaming the user. Beyond that Samsungs poor design choice leads to a scenario where for NORMAL people, the entire existence of the phone (having the Pen functionality) is ruined and AFAIK can't be restored by conventional means.

Exactly. You can't do it. Because someone in design realized that people accidentally will do it not out of incompetence or malice, just out of accidental use. So they prevented it before yet for the Note 5 made no attempt to account for the most common point of failure in technology - the user.

This is Samsungs problem. Stop blaming users who will accidentally insert the pen the wrong way when they're done and not realize they just crippled the Pen functionality entirely. Do you think most users will do this intentionally? Really?

On one hand, Samsung are stupid to design this new S-Pen in a manner where it can be inserted backwards in the first place.

 

On the other hand, people who put the pen in backwards for whatever reason are stupid assuming they're not small children.

Have you guys never heard of accidents? Even the most brilliant person in the world would cause mistakes now and then. Like inserting an SD card in a camera. I'm sure at least some of you would mistakenly insert it flipped right to left. Guess what? The card won't go in. How would you like it if inserting it the wrong way would cause the card to brick itself? While the slot gives absolutely no resistance so you won't notice you inserted it the wrong way until it's too late?

 

This IS a major design flaw which I don't see Samsung getting away easily assuming this can't be fixed by software. They'll either refuse to replace broken units or replace them costing them money (Or maybe do a recall of the S pens?). I'm guessing the latter while trying to shut up the media about this issue.

This could be foolproof very easily, though. It's really not hard to design a stylus in such a way that it only slides in one way.

Have you guys never heard of accidents? Even the most brilliant person in the world would cause mistakes now and then. Like inserting an SD card in a camera. I'm sure at least some of you would mistakenly insert it flipped right to left. Guess what? The card won't go in. How would you like it if inserting it the wrong way would cause the card to brick itself? While the slot gives absolutely no resistance so you won't notice you inserted it the wrong way until it's too late?

This IS a major design flaw which I don't see Samsung getting away easily assuming this can't be fixed by software. They'll either refuse to replace broken units or replace them costing them money (Or maybe do a recall of the S pens?). I'm guessing the latter while trying to shut up the media about this issue.

Yet people force SD cards and other connectors in the wrong way all the time and damage their gear. So by your logic there is a design flaw in basically every device.

Except with those, there is resistance. The person would definitely notice something isn't right. Counter measures were taken by the designers. With this S pen, there is none. It slides right in as if it was the right direction. And that's the issue.

Look like a revision 2 of the phone can be made with much ease to correct the problem, by as Arokhantos mentioned, to make the tip of the pen a bit larger, so that it doesn't fit the wrong way, assuming Samsung is interesting in fixing it, and not profit from a small increase phone sales if it happens out side of the warranty.

Normally, a company product testing involves having people using the phone wrong. It could be that this issue was found already but that cost money in manufacturing new molds and re do testing production runs, so they where hopping it won't happen. But that is just an assumption. That, or they didn't do product testing because they didn't think it it would be an issue for a smartphone, which is understandable, and just left it to the usual stress testing, where they have machines pressing on button millions of times to see when it will break.

1) Why isnt the pen keyed so that it CANT go in the wrong way, that seems simple to do? The top of it could be like 2mm wider so its impossible.

2) You shouldnt need to factory reset the phone to get your pen detection to re-enable (Assuming that fixes it)

 

I dont care if "someone is an idiot if they do this" or whatever. This is just as stupid as someone trying to use the wrong key to open a door, yeah its fucking stupid but it happens from time to time. Have you ever been drunk or tired before?

First rule of programming is to limit the users ability to do the dumbest shit you can think of. Letting the user make an open choice invites failure cases. Example: Never let them type something in when you can use a drop down or selector. Because you know some person will miss a key, or misspell a word, or just forget to type anything in.

 

It doesn't matter if it breaks when you do something its not designed to do, because all the customer cares about is it didn't work. Its your fault you let them do something that wouldn't work.

I'm surprised and a little saddened at the people who jump to the conclusion that you have to be an idiot to do this.

I can already think of several situations where this can happen very easily, like being in a waiting room for a doctor, interview, meeting and such, and you're using your phone, fiddling with the pen and someone walks out and calls your name.

You're, excited, nervous, what ever, you're trying to hurriedly gather up paperwork, a briefcase, laptop (this is very much compounded if you have a kid or kids to contend with as well) and you unknowingly and mistakenly slip the pen in backwards.

 

Something similar where you're at home, in a hurry to get out the door because you're running behind for something.

Your hands are full and you get a text.

Thinking it may be important you set down the things you have in your hand/s, get out your phone and check.

Maybe it is your boss, coworker, a friend or family member, maybe it is nothing but still in a hurry you look, respond and then put your phone away, accidentally sliding the pen in backwards by mistake.

 

This stuff is easy to do and to design it to not offer and kind or resistance when the pen is put in backward, especially when previous iteration of the phone had some way to prevent you from putting in the pen backwards, is a design flaw which is made very much worse because doing so can break something on the phone.

 

I've had things with pen devices and each one of them either had a tab, notch, groove to prevent this from happening or was designed to be inserted either way.

 

If it had some way to physically discourage the user from putting in the pen backwards and the user forcefully put the pen in backwards any way, then I'd say that was an idiot move by that person, but to have it slip in with no resistance AND cause something to break is a serious design flaw.

Curious about this, i can't really see how this would physically break any sort of sensor, that easily at least.

It may be a physical button or switch of some sort, that is pushed too hard and cannot be returned to normal state. I'm surprised about this - why isn't the top part of the pen a little bit larger so it can't be pushed backwards into the phone? Also after reading the comments - mistakes like this can be made if someone is in a hurry or has spaced out(or both - ugly situations from personal experience).

I own a Note 3 and never heard of anybody who freaking puts the s pen backwards.......in fact you can't even do it.

There's part of the flaw. You don't need to force the pen to go in backwards, it just slides in. The reason this flaw is known is because someone put the pen in backwards, either on purpose or by accident.

You have to force those. In this instance there is no resistance to putting the pen in backwards.

the tech community are real condescending ass holes, this is a major design flaw just like the 6+ bending was. something as simple as inserting a stylus in the wrong way should not break the phone.
