Which is why those who are smart look at the source code, so we can see for ourselves whether or not the tool is malicious.

I havent downloaded it yet and I had no idea that you can look at the source code. Also not everyone is programmer so even if you can look at the source code most people will find out nothing.

I didn't let it do all the stuff, but most of it worked, I saw my hosts file was edited and all my settings were turned off.

They don't understand how it's a bad thing. They delude themselves with the "well, everything else tracks you so who cares" argument or "I have nothing to hide" argument.

I wouldn't consider myself a programmer by any means, but I have fiddled around with HTML and Python in the past, after looking at the source code I personally do not see anything wrong with this program. Even if you're not a programmer, but you're a bit tech literate, you can read the code yourself and see there is nothing wrong with it. There is no phoning home, malicious writes, or anything out of the ordinary.

 

But hey, if you don't feel comfortable using it then I understand. I'll be using it on a VM in a bit too see how W10 reacts to it.

Wow that's really messy. What happened to commenting your code? Only like 1/3 of the code is commented properly.

I haven't looked through it all but it seems pretty harmless when you just scroll through it. Just does the usual stuff of adding entries to the hostfile (which by the way, might not actually works because since Windows 8, Windows will just ignore the host file if you add things it doesn't like) and changing flags in the registry.

 

Just learned that you can disable the telemetry in the registry apparently. Just have to delete the entry for dmwappushsvc in the registry if I am reading the program correctly.

It sucks that you have to jump through so many hoops to fix issues in Windows 10, and I wouldn't be surprised if Microsoft patches them with their stupid forced patches in the future. But for now it seems like all but one issue I have with Windows 10 can be fixed with tweaking.

 

Now we just need someone to give us proper controls over transparency. None of this "there are like 30 shit colors and that's all you get to pick from" bullshit. Give us back the Windows 7 sliders.

This is a cool tool, but I don't plan to use it. I'm only concerned about personal data being sent. I don't mind telemetry data to improve the OS being sent, though I do think think that it should be possible to completely disable everything just to keep people's minds at ease.

Calling me ignorant regarding the hacking community made me laugh. I work as a security consultant with a degree in CS working my way through Informational Security. I think I can safely say I'm pretty much informed about this crap.

 

And I'm sorry to let you down, but your personal info is already on the internet in one way or another. I bet you have a driver's license. Do you remember the DMV? Y'know, that hellish cesspit nobody wants to go to? Guess what. They store their data on sub-par servers with next to no proper security. I'll let you do the math.

Remember you bank account? Guess what. Your data is stored on servers that are easier to attack than launching a targeted attack; that's more money in a single hack, affecting thousands of victims, rather than relying on people catching malicious software that may or may not have a successful personal data turnover.

INB4 it is a virus and everyone was blind sided by the fact they are running run.exe from a major website with thousands of users. Also the "tracking" people are complaing about can be easily turned off in options. All the "tracking" is used for is like apple to find the weather where you are and news. The NSA already knows everything you do and don't need windows to integrate a tracking feature for them. You are all so paranoid. If you have a phone the FBI knows your exact location at all times (except if the battery is out and no they can still track your iPhone when it says plug in).
