Comcast’s forthcoming Gigabit Pro Pricing- 2Gbps

Comcast’s forthcoming Gigabit Pro service, which promises speeds of up to two gigabits per second, will cost $299.95 a month with a two year agreement, plus as much as $1,000 in installation and activation fees, according to a page on the Comcast XFinity website. That’s more than four times the $70 monthly cost of Google Fiber in Kansas City.

 

The Gigabit Pro page says the service should be available within one-third of a mile of Comcast’s existing fiber network, but also includes a list of specific cities in which it should soon be available. Many of the cities are ones that either already have, or are expected to soon have, gigabit internet connections—including Chattanooga, Tennessee; Atlanta, Georgia; and the San Francisco Bay Area

 

 

That is costly....

Well, compared to Norway. It is not that bad. Just a bit above what we have to pay if we want 1Gbps : D (Yes I know, Norway is supposed to be more expensive)

Gawd, I hate Internet in the US. My parents pay for a measly 18Mbps down and it costs $120 a month. Screw AT&T.

 

Edit: Anyone know when Google Fiber is coming to Houston?

Downloading and uploading certain types of files. The first of which is how long it would take to download an HD movie that is 5GB and the second is how long it would take to upload 200 photos which total 250MB.

But why are you specifically saying "HDD?" Someone with only HDDs in their system isn't going to have a 10Gbps Ethernet port in the first place.

Well, these speeds aren't really designed for a single user. If you're buying something like this you should have a fuck ton of computers all using internet at the exact same time. My old college with around ~130 computers had 320 Megabit. And that was more than enough. Although it also depends what you're doing. They ran QoS to ensure all the important shit was prioritized over useless stuff like streaming YouTube. And they also capped the student WiFi at like 16 Megabit since nothing of importance was done on it except students watching Netflix and YouTube.

 

But to answer your question, your download speed would just be bottlenecked by the hard drive. Kind of like using a USB 3.0 flash drive in a 2.0 port and expecting 3.0 speeds, or the other way around or whatever. :P

Then it writes at your write speed, of course. (Well, close to the write speed anyway). A RAM or SSD buffer would be the solution to that problem.

to get this you need to be able to afford 10Gbit/s equipement in order to use it... So maybe it's not so bad that it is so expensive, because you obviously have money if you get this.

Wow $1k install for a third of a mile is quite cheap and so is the monthly price considering its about the same for 200/200mps here in Aus.
