AMD FX vs Intel for gaming - 2015 Edition

@ and I built a PC for a customer with a 4460 and stock cooler and it was 100% dead silent under 100% load. It's a bit louder on my i3.

i3's stock coolers are noticeably worse then the ones that come with i5s.

Well the Intel coolers are...

 

A. Fine and no sound until they age...

B: Totally worse than AMD and makes you wanna go... ;_;

if you have a cooler that can oc it that far, then you could just get a cheaper one and a better Intel CPU

It will never be "cheaper" to get a i5 + mobo over a FX + mobo if you already OWN the FX and mobo...

 

you will never get 100% returns on your investment when reselling. Especially not with AMD stuff as it isnt nearly as popular as Intel CPU

The one on the right came with my Phenom II X6. It's actually a pretty epic cooler. Performs just as well as my Hyper 212 in terms of temps. Not in terms of noise though of course. AMD needs to step up from their puny 60(?) mm fans.

1. An FX 8350 at 5.4GHz only just starts to match a low tier i5 in games that uses 4 cores or less, and if the task actually benefits from more than 6 threads (an locked i5 is enough to keep pace with an FX 6300 at a higher clock speed, even in tasks that can fully use all 6 threads), or if the task can actually make use of the CMT architecture at all and have all ALU working, not 1 while the other waits.

2. 1 word on a GTX 970+ FX 8350: Depending on the game, massive bottleneck

 

 

Or just use the stock cooler.

Well it kept my 125W Phenom II X6 1055T at around 40c while gaming and around 50c under Prime95, which is pretty much the same as, if not slightly lower then, the numbers I get with my Hyper 212 Plus. Of course the 212 is much much quieter.

Yeah the ONLY reason I got the 212 Evo was for the silence! ^w^ (note the huge heatsink absorbs much heat so the fan spin slower...)

it should be a CM fan.... but its not written very visible.. just sort of some tiny embossed "Cooler Master ®" on the fan

As for FX for gaming... with todays mobo prices, and FX prices.... i would seriously consider a FX over a i3 or Athlon...

 

The IPC increase of the Athlon is so weak it wont matter VS the FX, as the FX boosts higher on stock and Piledriver is so easy to OC and benefits really nicely from it too, so FM2+ really aint worth it when there is only 25 USD separating the two....

 

As for mobos, ive looked around a little, and while none of the mATX boards will handle a full fledged "8 core", they will readily handle the 6300, and even the "e" versions of the 8320 and 8370... Still, would stick to 6300 as its cheap....

 

While i3 is better in single thread performance, if you can get a FX up to around 4.2GHz (which the ASrock 970m Pro3 and Asus M5A78L-M/USB3 are both capable of reaching according to YT videos), then the FX should hit less then 10% lower single thread performance compared to a i3 4160. Which is good, seriously though, that is good. considering there is a 40-45% gap in raw IPC....

 

So yeah, FX may not make a lot of sense, but at its current price point, they are not bad buys. Unless you want to OC a 8xxx or 9xxx CPU, which is way too costly both in terms of electricity used and the parts needed.

Looks like i made the right choice when upgrading this time, I was looking at the FX series and thought, how about a i7 this time. So i spent a little extra money for the i7-4790k and glad I made the change. Now I just need to upgrade my graphics card from a 660 ti to possibly the 980ti

The i7 4790k will last a long time and it completely smacks an FX 8350 silly in all tasks.

 

Edit: And I'd still recommend a Phenom II over anything from the FX line.

I've already saw a lower power bill with this CPU too, and it's quite quiet, sometimes I'll walk into my room wondering if the PC was on. My AMD Phenom II X6 1090T sounded like a train.(it still does as it's my mom's computer now)

That Phenom II consumes around the same amount of power as an 8350-and its still AMD's only CPU with more than 4 cores (multithreaded its around an i5 2500K in performance). Also its probably worth the cost of replacing the 1090T's cooler for one that is quieter.

Well I'm not gonna put any more money into the 1090T as all my mom really uses it for is to play Bejeweled 3 and does some reasearch on it. If the CPU fan does goes out, i'll consider it.

let me guess. you have a huge ass heatsink on the i7 and stock cooler on the phenom II
