I'm wondering how much I should spend on my motherboard.

I would say between $100 and $175 is fair depending on how good it looked, how many fan connectors, how easy the BIOS was to use and whether or not the VRM and chipset heatsinks look adequate.

For me myself I don't spend my money on high end motherboard like MSI Z97 XPower AC. Well, motherboards like MSI Z97 PC Mate is enough for me so no need to spend very high end motherboard.

£100 absolute max. I usually go refurb/open box to get a high tier board for less. (Like my Z97I-Plus was £66 rather than the ~£110 retail price at the time).

For a first-time ever build, I'd get a motherboard that has the features you need, and cut the optional add-ons and gimmicks. These boards are usually priced in the $100 ~ $150 range.

 

If later on, for a future build, you decide to spoil yourself a little bit, go ahead -- get a $300 ASSU ROG board, or Gigabyte SOC board, if you want.

 

Difference between the MSi Z97 Gaming 5 versus Gaming 7:

• Two more SATA 6Gb/s ports (8 vs 6)
• Four more USB 3.0 ports at the rear (8 vs 4)
• Two less USB 2.0 ports at the rear (2 vs 4)
• An extra HDMI port for the iGPU on the motherboard (2 vs 1)

Up to $200 without much regret. I am an aesthetics whore, so I will spend the extra money for a color matching, cool looking motherboard. If it looks cool enough, I will spend more.
